K3 review from "Reid Reviews"

His reviews are thorough and well worth the annual subscription, in my opinion. It is currently $32.95. Scroll down the home page to the section headed Subscribing.

Many of his reviews concern rangefinder equipment but Pentax is the SLR brand he reviews most often - cameras and lenses. When I am contemplating an expensive purchase, the price of a reliable Reid review is neither here nor there.

Why buy a Leica ?

If DxO sensor scores had anything relevant to say about the image quality (not to mention the photographic quality) that could be achieved in real world photography, it might be worth paying attention to them; but they donít.

I have both an M9 and a K-01 and enjoy them both. As much as I like the K-01, it isnít my experience that it betters M9 IQ.

I bought a Leica because I wanted a small full-frame camera capable of exceptional IQ. I wanted to be able to use some of the best lenses ever made on a camera without an AA filter. For some applications I like the rangefinder method of viewing the scene and focusing. The form factor makes it unobtrusive and the shutter is relatively quiet. Itís a manual camera that requires of the user some understanding of photography. Itís not everybodyís cup of tea but for those of us who value these features, it is unique.

The new Leica M model has more bells and whistles and a CMOS sensor. It is a more versatile camera and will probably do better in the tests.

Iíve used the Voigtlšnder 58/1.4 on the K-01. The combination is capable of producing first rate image quality. Things to consider are the heavy weight of the lens and the lengthy throw of the focus ring but I didn't find these to be a problem once I got used to this lens and camera combination. Focus peaking is a great help in fine focusing a wide open fast lens.

Spot on, Buceemie! Itís a camera for the open-minded photographer who values superb image quality and is not afraid of using a camera that isnít a clone of all the others. I agree - the K-01 has a touch of class about it.

Wrist strap

I usually carry my camera on a long neck strap worn bandolier style but I didnít get on with using the K-01 this way so I ordered a wrist strap from Gordy. Perfect! Nicely made and good value. Highly recommended.

Geranium Johnsonís Blue

Used the K-01 on a tripod for the first time and focused manually with the assistance of image peaking and magnification. The view screen is much easier to use on a tripod than a viewfinder would have been. I forgot to turn off image stabilisation but I think I got away with it.

I endorse AOShepís K-01 suggestion. Iíve been using one for a couple of months and Iím impressed.

You wonít go far wrong with a K-5 but, if cost is an issue, do consider the K-01 which is a little more affordable. It has everything you want, including 24fps full HD video, bracketing, very good high ISO performance and K-5-class image quality. It also has focus peaking (the K-5 doesnít). What it doesnít have is a viewfinder but I wouldnít let that put you off. If you havenít already, read Adamís Pentax K-01 Camera Review

If you can, take a look at a K-01 in person and handle it. It appears to be a love it or loathe it experience. If youíre one of the lucky ones, youíll love it and youíll be set up for some top quality picture making.

I havenít had any trouble. The secret is to hold the camera as close as your vision will allow and support the lens properly with your left hand. As others have said, a wide-brimmed hat helps. I found achieving accurate manual focus on a long lens tricky without support but the AF gets there eventually.

Hereís a shot taken with the DA 55-300 at not quite full zoom at the Hawk Conservancy in bright sunshine. There are some more taken with this lens in my Album.

One of the reasons I got the K-01 was to try my hand at video.

Can anyone recommend an up-to-date book on using a camera such as the K-01 for video recording? I need something for an absolute beginner with no knowledge of the subject beyond what I've read in the camera manual.

I use Safari. I always convert my photos to the sRGB colour space when theyíre destined for the web, which should maximise consistency across different platforms and browsers. You can never know for certain how your pictures are going to look to other viewers who may or may not be using calibrated monitors and may or may not have them adjusted to similar settings to those that you use.

A dramatic photo. Youíre on the brink of overdoing the PP but the menacing clouds and vivid grass add to the eeriness of the picture. Good job! And congratulations on your 1000th post!

Reid review of K-01

I subscribed to his site for a while for his reviews of rangefinder lenses which are well regarded in Leica circles. His comparative testing is very thorough and reliable. When you're thinking about paying thousands for a lens, Sean Reid's fee is a small price to pay to find out whether a cheaper Zeiss or Voigtlšnder option might do as well or better. It doesn't hurt that he also takes more than a passing interest in Pentax. I've always thought of him as one of photography's good guys.

Thanks for your comments, everyone! Very much appreciated.

Can anyone tell me why my thread doesn't have a thumbnail in the thread listing? The photo is linked from my member album. I didn't notice any way of generating a thumbnail and assumed it would happen automatically but it didn't.

Still learning the K-01. It's shaping up to be an extremely capable camera.

Here's a black and white photo processed in ACR and Photoshop. Don't worry about the crooked arch in the background. That's how it is.
