Pentax Lenses Falling Apart - Stripped Internal Screws

Yeah...seems there would have to be indications of an actual "impact" to deny warranty due to "impact damage".
From the thread linked in the op it looked as if Precision did the initial analysis as to cause "Precisionís evaluation only entailed that there was no customer abuse to lens to cause the barrel separation", prior to sending to Ricoh for repair. Don't know if it would muddy the litigation aspect, but maybe a call to Precision would help?

Different industry different rules I suppose, but when I worked for a large network equipment manufacturer we would see lots of "lightening damage" (Florida being the "lightening capital of the world"). The rule was simple - unless you see a lightening bolt sticking out of the side of the gear, it was covered. Might have just been an economic decision though - cost of doing a failure analysis vs just replacing the equipment.

Got it.

I would be interesting to know what the $600 charge was based on and why warranty did not cover it.

Did you determine that the store was not an authorized dealer after all?

Not saying it is right or wrong, but the practice of denying warranty on equipment sold via gray market is not uncommon. In the IT industry Iíve seen it happen numerous time with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment. In IT the practice is justified based on battling counterfeit gear, which is a real problem in IT. Probably not so much in cameras though.

Oh...it's definitely too much crop, that's a 200% crop. Point was to emphasize the difference between f5.6 and f8.

I'll admit I wouldn't know motion blur if it slapped me in the face ;)

Before I decided to RMA the lens I did some various test shots on stationary objects with a tripod.

Here is a sample

f/5.6

f/8.0

f5.6-7.1 just don't resolve the detail, 8-9 are good, and starts dropping off again at f10.
I get that the difference is small, but it is noticeable at normal viewing resolution. It's the difference between great detail on an owl's eye or just kind of muddy looking. And yes I could stop down but for a lens that cost as much as this I don't think I should need to, that's a full stop I'm effectively losing.
Just my perspective and I get that some would disagree.

Appreciate the input!

Interesting - on the 150-450 it would only do full stops. On the 55-300 it does 1/3 stops.

In the custom menu I set to - 0 1
From the info menu I could set the values with the back dial (+/- 1,2,3...). Iíll play around a bit more as no doubt I overlooked something.

Thanks
