I found a Petri 7s in a thrift store that fully works. I am going to try to shoot a roll of film with it. It even came with 2 rolls of Kodacolor X - Kodak color film that predates the C-41 process.

Oddly enough, I have renewed my yearly subscription for Flickr PRO. I didn't want to post to multiple social media accounts and I felt it was redundant with a dropbox account.

Now I am back because I feel Flickr is the last bastion of a photo sharing website that actually concentrates on Photography. Every thing else has either been monetized to death and/or data mining your personal information.

Also Flickr as a side benefit is a great photo hosting website which I use a lot for Pentax Forums posts. You can easily link an image on flickr with the image url button on forum posts.

Best and Worst Bag Purchased.

Yes in fact that is why I do the insert, I can distribute the weight where I want it, and put it a bag fitted for me rather than the one size fits all camera backpacks (most of which are too bulky or they dont have hip belts that don't really push weight to the hips). Granted you do lose a bit of access, and finding perfect insert is a game in of itself...

Buy a dead zx series body (Which there are plenty thanks to the gear failures) and steal the parts from it. You should be able to find an as-is one that still has the cap.

Which body to get?

i got a super-program and I have been very happy with it. My fingers have a lot better hold, I like the lcd display of aperture inside the viewfinder, and its built as well as a me-super if a little more plastic. The only thing I don't like is that you have to change to manual mode to shoot 00 and 0 shots. It defaults to 1/1000 shutter speed for shot 0 and 00 and doesn't meter until you get to 1. Its supposed to wind faster, but I would have liked it to at least start metering. The idea was you could advance the shutter fast without taking off the lens cap, but you are losing 1-2 shots a roll which adds up.

Trying out film, questions need answered and suggestions being sought

I have marked highlighted lenses that you can use with film with the correct body (any body that supports program mode - Pentax Super-Program or newer). Several DA lenses have a full or close to full size image circle and if the camera can control aperture, will work in either program\shutter priority, or can be full controlled.
I have crossed out DFA lenses that do not autofocus on film because while they cover the full frame image circle they do not have screw drive. You can manually focus them, but they are not optimized to be focused manually. You can not control DC\SDM lenses with film cameras. The contacts that look like SDM are actually PZ contacts in film cameras. There were a few DA* lenses that supported screw drive.

A good chart on compatibility. DA lenses have no aperture ring, so must be controlled by the camera. SDM and DC lenses did not come out before film ended so unless the lens has screw drive it will not work.

The FA limited pixie dust is seen better on a full frame body. The edges of a lens image circle are what defines a great lens. Not just sharpness, but the contrast and the focus transitions of the image of the edge vs at the center.

I have not been happy with my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 on full frame other than stopped down to F8. Even then, it doesn't have good colors and the focusing seems always to be off. If I had a second chance, I would have gotten the DFA 28-105mm, it would be a lot better use for landscapes and travel.

FA 31mm Limited, FA 77mm limited, DA 15mm, DA 12-24mm, and DA* 50-135mm. The latter 3 are so good, I don't want to sell them off even though I have been using my K-1. Honestly for landscapes the later has created images just as good as my full frame K-1.

Haha no, you replace regular GAS with Film GAS and that is just as bad. Already bought a Epson V600 because that was cheaper than sending out film to be scanned. The only good thing is I got plenty of Pentax glass to use with my film cameras. I use FA limiteds with a ZX-5 and SMC-Ms and As on a Pentax Super Program or Me Super.

After i bought a scanner, I am going through me and my parents photos, and I find the images that I cared about when I shot them, are not the ones I care about 20 years later. Sometimes the blurry images are the ones you hold dear.

I do miss the days of one camera one lens. I feel I am either carrying too little or too much gear. I wonder if this feeling is why people enjoy primes or compact cameras like the Ricoh GR or x100 series. It gets back to the days of spontaneity and not worrying about the gear. I wonder if that is why I am gravitating back to film.

I've been trying to find a medium format body to shoot roll film with. Was looking for either a mamiya or pentax 645 or 67 kit...and every cheap one on ebay states that is "untested". You can sometimes find real gems but most of the time the people on ebay selling as-is gear knows exactly what they have and how to sell it. Every pawn shop\thrift store has been picked clean thanks to easy valuation by using your smart phone.

Bought a V600 scanner so I could scan in my own film negatives. Testing out this image, this is a scan of a negative from 1996. Taken at Fallingwater with a Pentax IQ 160 zoom that my parents owned.

At first everything is new to you, you have the joy of discovering something for the first time. Then you go through a gear phase, where every gear upgrade is important to you, and you have the joy of acquiring gear. Finally, there is a stage where you begin to learn again, and you have the joy of knowledge and understanding. You realize the first 2 phases are necessary but only steps towards your goal. Its just that people confuse the joy of acquiring gear with the joy of self-improvement. The former is only satisfies for a moment, while the self improvement changes you for the better.

My ZX-5 went into sorta of a mirror flap problem where it advanced shots really rapidly and it messed up 10 or so shots of a 36 roll of Ektar. I wonder if was because of the AA batteries and cold weather, I bought some fresh CR2s to try to skip the battery grip altogether.

Thanks to some friends who are getting back into film photography combined with a new local lab that develop prints, I have gotten my ME-super fixed, a new Pentax ME, a Pentax ZX-5, a Super Program, and a new V600 scanner. I told myself I would not go down the rabbit hole, but it seem that film pulls you in.

I agree that quick access is better for dayhikes and such, but I rather just have the camera on my strap outside my bag. I don't find inserts any worse or better than regular camera backpacks, you still have to shift your weight around, you still have to open some compartment and you still have to put it back in that compartment. All the Horizon series is a custom designed insert that has a quick release system so you don't have to take off your belt. What you gain in quick access, you lose in the fact you added a zipper at the bottom of the bag which leads to water ingress. The Horizon is much lighter which I commend, but the old 180 rotation pro when I was looking was 5.9 pounds....that is more than my tent+stakes+pads, and I don't even have the uberlight gear of some backpackers. I come in this as a huge Thinktank fan (the company behind Mindshift).

In backpacking, I rather have my our heaviest weight between my shoulder blades. Putting a heavy weight at the bottom of the bag changes your center of gravity which leads to fatigue or worse inbalance when scrambling. You can mitigate this with a belt strap that distributes weight but then you are undoing belt straps to get to the side access or taking it off to get to more gear...which defeats the whole point of quick access pockets. But again everyone has preferences on their priorities. I find gear safety and weight distribution my priorities, other people will have different ones. I have the two Lowepro Photo Sport AW. One is a Flipside with back access and the other is a Lowepro Photo Sport AW 200 daypack with sling style access. Both backpacks have advantages and disadvantages.

I find most camera backpack that hold too little camera gear to use as a primary bag and hold too little camping gear to backpack with, i find it better to just put an insert that holds an extra camera and/or lens into a backpack and have the camera on a neck or handstrap. Yes you lose access to your extra lens or body while hiking but as long as you don't pack it at the bottom of the bag, you can easily get to it at the top of the bag. Also placing the top of the bag protects the gear, it seems every outdoor bag seems to put the camera body at the bottom of the bag with a zipper, the same bottom that get dropped on rocks and is the first part that hits the mud or water. Also putting your heaviest weight as a shifting weight in the middle of the bag just leads to fatigue on any hike longer than a few miles. Finally that insert works on all size bags, you can put it in a daypack for day hikes, a backpack for backpacking, and a messenger bag for easy access in town.

That is what happened with me and a Lowepro Nova AW and a DA 15mm. it had no zipper nor velcro, only clasps. The DA 15mm slipped out when i was scrambling by a waterfall, and the DA 15mm rolled down a hill hitting a few rocks along the way. Now I always make sure that a field bag has a zipper or really strong velcro.
