eBay purchases from JAPAN

I had a great experience with kenidiom11 on a SIGMA APO 50-500mm F/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM a few months back. Given the potential cost to return if there were a problem and US Sigma's aversion to repairing lenses not originally bought from the US, I opted to buy the square trade 1 yr warranty for appx 10% of the price. The combined cost was still far less than similar US eBay offerings.

How do you store your lenses?

I've used similar lens pouches for the last 40 years with no problems, here in New England where we have cold winters and warm humid summers. I label the pouches for easy ID.

You can use 3D fabric paint for a permanent label, or painter's tape for hard to stick surfaces (my method)

Analyzing Someone's (or your own) Work

Clever article. As you noticed, it starts as "how to critique the work of others" but really seems to be about educating the reader about the importance of manipulating various factors to produce art. Well done!

Regarding reacting to “What do you think?”: Assuming there is something that could have improved the shot, I give an example of something I like, followed by a suggestion for improvement, followed by another compliment.

It's a simple formula that gets good results and applies in many areas of life. It was taught to me by a successful corporate manager, early in my career.

Originals are in their boxes, but for a few dollars I bought a package of 2 on eBay and have them tucked into a couple most used camera bags; just in case.

I've repaired and closed holes in equipment cases with hot glue. Do a little at a time and build upon the prior amount until the hole is closed. It can be trimmed flush with a knife and blended with something hot, like the nozzle of the glue gun. Paint it whatever color you like with model paint. Easy.

A dangerous question

First, I want to start by saying that your photos are good and clearly you've learned some good techniques.

BUT, a person should concentrate on something that they enjoy; are passionate about. The fact that you're asking tells a reasonable person that you have not yet found your passion: you wouldn't need to ask if you did. My advice is to keep looking. Forget the stills and landscapes. You've "been there, done that" and they apparently don't float your boat. Maybe street photography, wildlife or people interacting, birds in flight, etc. Whatever it is, if you find it, you'll know.

Best of luck finding your passion.

Battery life.

From a practical standpoint, I see no problem with battery life. When on vacation, I start the day with a fully charged battery and carry a spare. I can't remember the last time a battery didn't last the day. I don't turn anything off or go through any special gyrations to save battery power. Are you guys really taking hundreds of shots per day on a regular basis?

If you have a hard time making a decision when you're in the moment, it'll be much harder for you to decide the lenses to select before the need arises. You'll be facing emotional stress at least once more for each outing.

Addressing a mild psychological weakness is often helped by practicing. In your case, maybe go out with all your lenses and force yourself to find a shot and make a decision on which lens to use. Maybe start by randomly picking a lens out of your bag. Eventually, you'll be making stress free decisions easily.

Good luck.

If I like something about a post, be it a comment or one of several photos, I simply "like" the whole thing. I'm not stingy with my compliments and don't sweat the small stuff.

Congrats on the great shot!
FWIW, a technique that I use is to put the ball head all the way over into the detent and mount the lens to that. Leave the tripod collar slightly loose so the camera can be leveled and leave the ball head slightly loose to be able to adjust aim up and down. You need a sturdy ball head to make this work well. It gives you flexibility to follow movement similar to a gimbal head.

A camera safety note: the release plate should be angled so that the plate release knob is pointing up and not down. If down, it can rub against the monopod or ball head body and loosen the release plate.

Congrats on the new to you lens. FWIW, my two SDM lenses that work properly are noticeably faster than any of my screw drive lenses. I think that people see an improvement in speed after conversion are basing it on their failing SDM, so of course the conversion improves theirs that was struggling.

Composition or camera gear?

For me, it's rare not to crop something. 3:2 is not usually the best aspect and a photo's intended use is also a factor. I'll often crop the same photo different ways to suit my need, and it's not just done through software. For framed shots, I'll print a tad larger, then cut the mat to get the best result. A common error I see is to fill the frame so much that there is no room for matting or frame edge. Subjects can lose their feet or the tops of their heads over this.:D

Sometimes Gatorboard can save the day, but it's not everyone's decor choice.

Neither. IMO, it's subject matter. For example, a poorly composed image taken with a 4mp P&S of a chupacabra would get tons of hits.:D:D

If you're going to use flat mode, you might as well shoot RAW. It gives the most latitude for correction since it starts with the most "honest" depiction. I'm not a huge fan of Digital Camera Utility, but one of the benefits is that it will show raw images applying the settings of your camera. Since it's not already JPEG, it's easy to undo or change. It basically mirrors the KP settings so you can experiment with what camera settings would give you the desired results.

You are WRONG again. I followed the links: they are ALL dead ends. Sure, the link to a similar question works, but within those, all resource links are dead or to unavailable product.
Your last link in this reply, to a product that CAN be purchased, is useful, however. So clearly, my response WAS useful in that it caused you to find a live product link to redeem yourself. You're welcome. ;)
