Back in the saddle with the 645z

The 45-85mm is a great lens for the price that you can get it for secondhand.

I was pleased to see the 33-55mm on your list as I think that it's massively underrated. Yes, it's no 28-45mm, but its small size and its light weight means that you're more likely to take it with you than the massive and heavy 28-45mm.

The A 35mm is great, too. Smaller than the FA 35mm but just as impressive.

The tiny 75mm is worth having in your bag (or pocket, it's so small!)

Good luck building your kit.

I'm embarrassingly new to using manual focus lenses but what I do is focus with the lens wide open (f3.5) using the focus indicator aid < o > in the viewfinder (until I hear the beep indicator), I then change the aperture to f11 or f16 and take my photo. The screen on the P65+ is REALLY bad so I tend to look at the histogram to check the exposure (which I'm really bad at nailing!). I haven't taken the time to learn hyperfocal focussing; I should really.

The little Samyang (which I've affectionately named Sammy) is sharper than my VERY good copy of the Phase One 28mm f4.5 AF Aspherical!! It's just a shame that it's not autofocus, but that's not the fault of the lens.

Hi Peter,

I'm sure that he would post to the U.S.A. Send him a message. In fact, someone over at the getdpi forum bought one after seeing my posts about it and I'm pretty sure that he lives in the U.S.

Here's another jpeg: Dropbox - Samyang 24mm f16 ISO 50 CF006289.jpg Both images were handheld.

Hi Peter,

Take a look here: Now! Ultra wide angle Samyang 24mm/3,5 adapted for Mamiya 645 Phase One 28 35 45 | eBay He's sold at least 3 others since mine.

I guess the removal of the T/S mechanism gives him the room to play with that he needs. The converted lens is quite hard to focus as there's not much room to play with. The P65+ doesn't have Live View so that makes it harder. The lens is definitely a keeper and will be even easier to use when I eventually get my hands on an IQ-range Phase One back with Live View.

I'll put a sharper example on Dropbox either tomorrow or over the weekend.

The lens is so small and light it's a no brainer.

Surprisingly good! Here's a dropbox link to a jpeg (the TIFF is twice as good): Dropbox - Samyang 24 non-TS equivalent to c15mm CF006109.jpg

By the way, the effective pixel count of the P65+ is 60.5MP's.

I had a love-hate relationship with the 28-45mm and in the end I decided it was too heavy and not wide enough. I now have a Phase One P65+ and use a converted Samyang 24mm Shift lens (now non-shifting). On the full-frame P65+ the 24mm Samyang gives the equivalent of a 15mm lens! Nice and small and light, too.

The small 35mm is also equivalent to a 22mm. Perfect travel lens.

Rick,

I've owned this lens and you definitely have a bad copy - probably a loose element, like you summise.

I sold my 645Z in favour of the Phase One P65+ as the 28-45mm lens for the 645Z was too big to lug around. The P65+'s larger sensor means that the small and lightweight Phase One 35mm lens is as wide as the 28mm end of the 28-45mm. Perfect. No more aching shoulders!

Also, the Phase One 28mm on the P65+ is equivalent (in 35mm terms) to an 18mm lens!!

Yes, the P65+'s dynamic range isn't as good as the 645Z but it's close enough for my style of shooting. Horses for courses, I guess.

I live in hope that one day Pentax will release a TRUE full-frame '645X' with smaller and lighter lenses.

I have the Zoerk Pro Shift Adapter and have used both the P67 45mm and the P67 55mm (late version) lenses with it. Works great.

I'm considering selling it (with the 45mm lens), though, as I've recently moved to the Phase One P65+.

I use a P67 45mm on my Zoerk Pro Shift adapter and it works really well. It's nice to go wider than Mamiya's excellent 50mm shift lens. The Mamiya is more 'elegant' and is smoother to operate.

By the way, I e-mailed Zoerk the other day and they have a Mamiya 50mm shift lens that's been adapted to the Pentax mount for €980. If you send them your own lens they charge €580 for the modification (plus €120 for Customs charges if you're sending them the lens from outside the EU). All prices are without tax and shipping.

Just passing that on as I used to have one but stupidly sold it. Now that I have a Z I wish I still had it!

"De-fish" software for 645 fisheye lenses?

I'd love to get a Phase One P65+ to use with my Mamiya Sekor D 28mm lens. That would give a 17mm f.o.v. with 60 megapixels!

Don't worry, I know this is the Pentax forum, so just to state that I DO own a 645Z. Perhaps I'll just settle for a secondhand D-FA 25mm rather than having two systems (I can't afford the P65+ anyway!). I'd get a wider image with the P1 + 28mm combo but would the image quality be better than a 645Z with the 25mm - especially considering how old the P65+ is? Probably not.

"De-fish" software for 645 fisheye lenses?

You've reminded me about an Optex 0.7X Wide Angle converter that I have. I must give it a proper test. It also has an 82mm thread (which can also fit on the 33-55mm lens). The Optex also comes with a Super Wide Angle converter lens which the Wide Angle converter fits inside. The front filter size of the Super Wide Angle converter is a Hubble telescope-sized 119mm!

I doubt this combo will give as good results as a well de-fished 30mm Arsat.

For my 645Z I recently bought a 30mm Arsat with a "Hasselblad 1000F" mount. I therefore bought a K&F Concept "Hasselblad V mount to Pentax 645 adapter" but I can't figure out how to successfully attach it - or even if I got the correct adapter - as I can pull it straight off! Has anyone got any idea which adapter I need?

I'm just starting to play around with a P67 45mm on a Zoerk Pro Shift adapter. Nice. The P67 55mm (late version) is supposed to be sharper than the 45mm but I was keen to go below the 50mm barrier.

I used to have an Arsat 55mm PCS (in Pentax mount) but I found that it was quite soft. The Mamiya 50mm is WAY sharper. To my shame, I sold an extremely rare Mamiya 50mm lens IN PENTAX MOUNT!!

I'm wondering how a P67 35mm fish eye lens would shift on my Zoerk!

I also did this with my D-FA 25mm on a 645Nii and, yes, the image filled the whole 645 frame with no vignetting. The D-FA is seriously wide on the 645N!!

That's my findings, too. I recently - knowingly - bought a 35mm A lens and a 75mm FA lens with mould on the front element and I'm hard pressed to tell that they have this issue. That suits me as I got them for half of the usual prices!

No Customs Duty (this time). Sometimes I get charged, sometimes I don't. It seems like it's only 3% (here on Guernsey in the Channel Islands) so if I see a good deal a factor that in, just in case.

Regarding new items, if I buy them from the U.K. VAT isn't applicable to Channel Islands residents so I don't get charged the extra 20%. That can really help when buying an expensive lens; I can save £100's.
