Sales of the K-x in Japan pushed back 17 days

I happen to be holidaying in Japan at the moment and I can confirm that there are definitely no display models in any of the big stores over here. There's definitely a lot of K-x advertising around the place though.

Cant say I've experienced any of those kind of flare issues you point out.

This lens is absolutely superb in all respects. Sharp, great colour, quick focusing and great build.

Works great with the Sigma 1.4 tc also:

I'm pretty well in agreement with you here. I recently ordered a DA21 from Adorama. Even when CRK are willing to price match items, it's a lot less hassle for me as the consumer to order from fantastic dealers like Adorama and B&H and receive the items in a matter of a few days (as opposed to weeks to order it in through a local dealer).

This rubbish about warranties and peace of mind that CRK pull just doesn't stand up when the risk of receiving a faulty item is extremely low and the saving is 25% (or possibly a great deal more).

Amazing shots and amazing dedication from the rider. To be that far gone and still looking the right way up the track, stunning.

Purchase DA70 or keep using my DA*50-135?

I actually sold my 50-135 in favor of buying the DA 70 for size and weight reasons others have already mentioned.

The DA* 50-135 is a fine piece of kit but I didn't see any point in holding onto it if I was going to have second thoughts about taking it anywhere. The DA 70 is so small and light I have no hesitations about putting it in my bag whether I think I'll use it or not.

Pentax K-m availability in Oz

From what I've been able to see, Ted's definitely appears to be the only store stocking the K-M at the moment. I seriously struggle with the logic of having an exclusive retailer. It's assured that the price of this camera is sure to remain high and unreasonable until well after it's discontinued.

There's not much I can add to that, I am in total 100% agreement with you there mate. Complete bollocks indeed.

For anyone wanting to make a last minute purchase, it appears that Camera Action have not yet adjusted their price list. Only a matter of time though I imagine...

pentax da* 50-135 or some primes ?

I must agree with all the comments on the size/weight of the 50-135. I myself had one for about 3 months, sold it due to it's bulk and bought a 70mm Limited and have never looked back.

That said, the 50-135 is a quality lens in every aspect as you will see from the enormous amount of praise it has received in this forum.

pentax 300mm f4 or sigma 100-300mm f4

I went with the Sigma for the flexibility of having a zoom. The weight isn't an issue for me as it's typically mounted to a monopod which I sling over my shoulder when walking around. The image quality and focusing speed of the Sigma are brilliant. I'm sure the Pentax is a quality item and there are days where I'd really appreciate having weather sealing. However, the Sigma is the best zoom I've ever owned/used and as such I highly recommend it.

This lens is spectacular. Autofocus speed is more than adequate. Here's a couple of recent shots taken with it on my K200D:

Yep, at Phillip Island. Just standing at the fence which is quite close to the track at most parts of the circuit.

The next time GP bikes will be at PI (before the next GP of course) would be during off season testing in summer. I've not been down for a testing session but from what I understand public access is quite limited if at all.

Shooting Motorcycle Races

I shoot bike events about 8-10 times a year and have no problem. FPS doesn't really play a part in my shooting because I'm usually only after a certain angle at any given moment.

Here's one with my K200D and Sigma 100-300 f/4 (monopod assisted):

Even if you have ordinary gear and have to resort to pre-focusing you can still get great shots. In fact, I would probably say that pre-focusing is the best way to develop your panning skills. Here's a pre-focused, hand-held shot with my *ist DL and crappy old Tamron 80-210 f/4.5-5.6:

My thoughts exactly. I'm currently in the process of selling my 50-135 and picking up a DA70 on the basis of size. Whilst I love the 50-135 in all it's glory I wouldn't dare travel with it...

DA* 50-135 autofocus speed

I definitely have other lenses that autofocus faster. However, I find my 50-135 to be much more accurate than others, particularly in low-light.

I sense a running theme here. I just received my DA* 50-135 from Adorama this week in a very shabby looking box. On your experience I may also complain. That said, the condition of the box my Sigma 100-300 (also from Adorama) was pristine.

I also have the Sigma 100-300 f/4 and my preference is definitely to use a monopod. I use it mostly for motorsports, so carrying it around all day is way too much of a pain.

I had one of these lenses. Not a bad lens all up. Nice colours, great IQ, very good build quality. Just too big and bulky for a walkabout lens imho.

I have one and can honestly say that the lack of HSM is a non-issue. I use it primarily to shoot motorcycle racing and have no problems at all.

It'd make for a wonderful spectacle if all bike racers started using the same knee-sliders as this guy ;)

I really like some of the perspectives you've captured here. Some of them have a real 'covert surveillance' feel.
