They are required, but it's another story if they actually do anything, so good service yes.

I had to send it to Kameraservice in Sweden.

A nice surprise from Pentax

Hello!

Got my Pentax K-5 back from repair here today, with a new and spotless sensor.

I bought my K-5 in February 2011 and noticed the splotches almost immediately but was too lazy to do anything about it whilst under warranty.

Dust specks on the K-5 @ f/22

I was then pleasantly surprised when I contacted the service center this August and asked them if they did repair it and they said that they did and even free of charge. Not bad for a 4 year old camera!

The K-5 has long since been replaced by a K-3 in this household but perhaps I should treat it to a nice outing with the newly repaired DA*16-50/2.8.

645Z - RAW: Pentax PEF or DNG?

I used to use DNG but Lightroom is quite boneheaded and won't write an xmp sidecar file for DNGs. Got tired of multigigabytes of backups each time I even synchronized the folder.

Poll: Lens Tournament Final: FA 77mm Limited vs FA 31mm Limited

I voted for the "loser" but I guess it all depends on the perspective!

I've been lugging around with the K135/2.5 and the DA*50-135/2.8 a bit too much lately so I inadvertently liked something wider a bit more.

Looking at these two lenses I realized I really want them and I still regret I didn't have the (quite small amount of) money when I stumbled on the amigos for sale a few years back in matching black, made in Japan with the leather pouches.

How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

The SDM in my 16-50/2.8 worked for three years. Even if the lens is a bit noisier now it's better than a dead lens or going back to the 16-45/4 which I never really liked.
Now, perhaps I should check the focusing correctness?

My first impressions of the K-3

I've had my K-3 now a couple of weeks and the grip a couple of days.

First impressions of the whole package:

That bl**dy red button! I keep hitting it with my eyebrow several times a day when holding the camera vertically with the grip on. It's mildly annoying to say the least. Why did Ricoh raise it so much?

I do like the improved AF compared to my K-5.

It feels noticeably heavier with the grip on than the K-5. That might annoy me more than the red button.

The strap is rubbish. Feels really cheap and nasty.

The sensor might be noisier than the K-5 but I haven't noticed it in the images unless I really peek at them. I have no problem with most ISO12800 images.

I like the auto white balance, even if I can adjust it later, I like it to be more or less spot on in the first place. Big improvement there.

The K-5 did not like my 10-17 at all, it over-exposed pictures by several steps. The K-3 handles the lens much better, although I've only had it on once. Might be too early to say.

The shutter sound is a metallic *snic*. I can't say I prefer it that much over the K-5, but I do like it.

I had the same happen to me today. In aperture Prio then went from spot AF to full auto and my K-3 went all machinegunny. No grip, original battery.

Rainy November by Thomas Backa, on Flickr

Even if the camera is weather resistant I'm not. Ugly weather. And I haven't received the battery grip yet.

I've pre-ordered the normal K-3 and the D-BG5 from a local store here in Finland. Interestingly enough they list the limited K-3 for the same price as the normal K-3 + battery grip + extra battery (1499€ vs 1487€).

...or for people like me with slightly larger hands. It's nice to be able to grip the camera with all fingers.

The D-BG5 will probably be made of Unobtanium the first months, at least here.

Pentax LX + Auto Bellows M + M50/1.7 + Slide Copier M by Thomas Backa, on Flickr

The LX and the M50/1.7 are older acquisitions. The bellows are in almost new condition with all the parts that belong (cable release, distance scales , film holders and manual). Got it for a mere 87 including shipping.

Why is the FA*28-70 so expensive?

I had the same experience with the same lens last week, it was really cheap in a good used condition so I bought it after just a few minutes of testing. It was when I came home later and put it and the K-5 on the tripod I noticed I couldn't dial out the horrible back focus on it and that the images were just as unsharp on f9.0 as they were on f2.8. Luckily I was able to return the lens for a full refund.

Should have realized that for 320 I was buying a dud. It's still for sale afaik.

The middle one is quite beat up and has a really big dent on the viewfinder. The impact has even cracked the glass lens over the focusing screen and jammed the little blue plastic flap.

But mechanically it's in top condition, doesn't leak and meters just fine. I like it the way it is with half of the leatherette ripped away.

Neither has shown any sticky mirror symptoms and the two other have only minor scratches on them except for the slight brassing on the mirror lockup button.

The most expensive one of the three cost me 190...

I haven't tried any other cleaning methods yet since the specks are barely visible against a blue sky at f/8. I'll probably get something like that any week now...

100% crop from a ISO80 f/22 shot of the sky today. Good news is that those three specks are visible on the sensor. Bad news is that they don't come off with a blower.

A somewhat beaten-up LX that I bought today. Seems mechanically and electronically OK though.

I got it for a reasonable amount of money locally here in Turku considered the condition it's in.
