Welcome to the forum.
I also had a problem with a 4 GB card, but it's reading it fine now that I've updated to 1.3.

Keep the questions coming, and enjoy the information that is shared. I've learned a lot, just by reading the other posts.

Oops - just realized you have a *ist DL. I was thinking about the K10D. I'm not sure if the *ist DL can handle a SDHC card. Look at the information on the Pentax site detailing the features in the 1.03 update. If it mentions SDHC, then you're in luck.

Macro lessons

Now that the flower macro poll is closed, I thought I'd post these crops of my entry. After looking at the other entries, I realized that I could improve my shot by limiting the view.

I've tried two separate crops. Let me know what you think.

Attachment 6992

Attachment 6993

Here are my reasons for the two crops:

I wanted to do a 100% crop (so I'm limited in the number of pixels).

The first crop accentuated the transparency of the petal, and the veining. However, the stamen just barely poked into the right corner.

The second was chosen to show more of the stamen, and the metallic appearance, but also tried to retain the transparency of the petals. I personally like the second one better, but wondered which one you like?

As a side note, my lens required that I stood about 5-6 feet away in order to focus in Macro mode, and I didn't have a tripod.

Here's an example of catching my cat in mid-leap, climbing up the fence.
Attachment 6916

If you know how fast cats normally jump - the chance that I'd catch the cat exactly with her feet both touching the cross-board on her leap would be slim. Also considering that this was shot with an Optio 555 - with it's delay - and it's purely amazing.

Just a case where I watched my cat and snapped ahead of time hoping that my timing would be good enough.

I voted too. There are over 5500 votes so far, so it will take a lot of Pentax users to increase the percentage significantly.

Thanks.

I guess the first time (and probably the only time) I went into the Custom menu, it was before I understood what that option was, and how it would work.

I appreciate the explanation.

I may be blind, but I can't find a reference in the K10D manual on how to decouple the AF from the shutter button.

Can someone provide steps on how to do this?

Thanks!

Hmmm...
Sounds like it's time for me to go back to the manual and read it over again. I too used to keep my finger next to the M/AF-C/AF-S lever and would switch to manual focus when I wanted to focus on something that was not in the center, or near one of the focus points. I still tended to use the auto focus to get the sharp focus on the item, but would then turn it off and attend to the composition.

Now it looks like I can decouple the focus from the button and use the AF button instead. Much more control. I like it.

Delphinium Pagan's Purple

We completely tore out all of our landscape and had a perennial garden installed, along with other landscaping. One of our favorites in the garden was this Delphinium. I loved the purple colors. This was the first set of flowers to develop and was my favorite macro picture of the bunch.

It looks like the Exif data was not included:

K10D, F/4.5, 1/90 sec., ISO-400
Quantaray AF LD 70-300 mm 1.4-5.6 Tele-Macro, 180 mm (macro marks indicate this is 1:3.9).

Sorry for the late addition. I just got back from a vacation in Yachats. For those not from the US, this is a small town on the Oregon coast. We went down there for storm watching, and wound up staying an extra day due to the wind storm that went through this past Thursday.

Had lots of fun taking pictures with my K10D, and also borrowing my wife's Optio M30 to take movies.

How do I establish Firmware on my K10D ?

Also, when you extract the files from the firmware download, it will also extract a readme text file that also has ALL the directions. You don't have to have the web site open or print it out.

K10d Firmware 1.3 is out

One of my gripes with the original firmware was the non-support for 4 GB SD cards that were formatted as FAT-32. The cards had to be formatted by the camera to be used, but when you tried to read it in the computer, Windows XP reported that the card was unformatted. You couldn't simply put the card in and copy the images over.

Now in Firmware 1.3, a FAT-32 formatted SD card is recognized by the K10D, and it works!

Anybody know exactly which Firmware update fixed the ability to read FAT-32 cards? I couldn't find this feature improvement listed anywhere in the Firmware readme.

In case it was never listed - now you know!

We had a bad wind storm last week and we lost power for 3 days (many others lost theirs for much longer). This was taken while we only had 2 small oil lamps going in our living room as the only light source. The situation looked interesting and I had to try to capture it.

Used a tripod and set the shutter with the 12 second delay so I could get into the picture.

EXIF = 18 mm, F/3.5, 1/2 sec., ISO 800
K10D with kit lens.
The only PP done was adjust balance to around 2900 K, cropped the picture to 1600x1200 then resized to 800x600 for posting here.

Attachment 486

Here is a 100% crop of a picture on the table next to the lamp (outside the above crop) that I used to verify the color balance.

Attachment 487

Suggestions? I would assume I should have used a longer shutter speed - but this was the automatic setting.

I was mostly curious to see how well the automatic setting would do with such a dim setting.

Poll: A Pentax Survey

I had to chuckle....
I found the poll while browsing the site, and only got the email later. I was also surprised to find that the survey was this poll. From the email, I thought it might have more to do with using different software for the site, or adding different functionality.

There is one limitation of this site that I would appreciate changing. I know that the site only records your last visit, and it assumes that you've read everything once you've logged out (or left).

Personally, I prefer the newsreader type of functionality, where items I have not read remain unread until either I really do read it, or purposely mark it as read (to get rid of it). As it stands, if I open the site and then immediately close it without actually reading anything, all the handy notifications about what is new - gets lost. All the links to read the "next unread" post in a thread are reset.

Maybe I'm just too used to newsgroups rather than bulletin boards where the newsgroup software handles individual entries throughout your subscribed boards, rather than working with limited cookie support. But - that type of functionality is important to me.

Anyway, my feedback is the type of feedback that I was hoping that the email was asking for.

Hi Jay!

Here's a hearty welcome from the Eastside. Have you tried the walks around Juanita Bay Park? Lots of sightings of redwing blackbirds, herons, swallows, and an occasional eagle. Plus lots more.

I'm looking forward to getting a decent zoom to help in taking pictures there and up along the Skagit river during the eagle season. I once saw 10 eagles soaring along a hillside all at the same time.

Hi, I'm Bob from Washington State, USA. I live near Seattle and currently work as a software tester. I've previously been a Molecular Biologist until funds dried up, and put in a stint with the Air Force for 2 years. I was born in the Bronx, New York, but have lived all around the country - having finally settled here in the NorthWest for the last 20 years.

I grew up with cameras in the family, but started doing more than snapshots when I went to graduate school and had access to a darkroom.

Now, I'm a fully converted digital addict and have a hard time using my old film camera.

Can the K10 or K100 write to a USB 2 key?

What you can do, is get a USB holder that takes SD cards, then pop the card into the reader. I bought one for less than $10 and use it to pass files between computers. My laptop has a built-in SD card slot, so transfer rates are really good. I just hope that the SD card cover on the K10D is up to being opened and closed A LOT.
