Aint that what it's all about for some of us... There's using what you enjoy and then there's getting the job done. Very seldom do the two coincide.

This guy thought that the still images from the Sony's were good enough to use, though he's a Canon Fanboiy and likes the R5.

So I wouldn't write the 60mp full frame Sony A7R4 off as "only a camcorder..."

Have not seen a quality drop in the Sony EVF at all.

A7R4 vs K1 2

Considering the k33 is being marketed with the penta prism "uber alles" I would think so...

EVF's have really come around recently for sure. The A7R4 with a 5.6 million dot and 120fps refresh rate evf is actually nicer to use and easier to see clearly than the real view through a dslr... At least that's what I thought the other day when I was shooting both types back to back.

But it's not just 4k or 8k, it's also exposure and AF and image stabilization during video as well. I have a Fuji XT3, considered one of the leading 4K video recording cameras on the market today and compared to the Sony A7R3 or 4 (which only do 4k/30) the AF and exposure is not as good. The Sony AF somehow magically focuses on what you want it to focus on 99% of the time. The Fuji is more like 85% and not as usable and no IS but the XT4 does have IS, whatever. And the Sony exposure is steady and accurate while the Fuji "swells" from time time, whatever that's about. The Sony does have very usable IS during video recording as well.

As for the K33, I'm just wondering if it will AF during video at all... We'll shall see and hopefully be happily surprised!

One of the benefits of living in the land of: "where too much is not enough..." It's really easy to sell used gear at 80-90% of new prices quickly. And if you buy the gear at a good price, sometimes it's a free "rental." If access to a thriving used marketplace wasn't so readily available, I'd be much more inclined to making a choice and sticking with it... And to be fair, any of the cameras I've tried over the past 10 years would have been more than enough to do what I need to do with a camera.

Also, if I had been using Pentax all these years exclusively, and "locked in" for whatever reasons, I'd be much more willing to pay $2000 for the new K33. But that marketing strategy by the camera makers is really from a bygone era, at least in the US market. When you can buy a used Sony or Fuji or Canon or Nikon from 5 years ago for 1/10th the price of new and those cameras are more than enough to do whatever you want to do, or worse yet - equal to what your brand is releasing as new today, then selling the latest and greatest at a high price gets tougher.

But I am kind of starting over with a new channel called Edward Thomas. (Link in signature)

Same content as PHOTO UNIVERSE but no adds.

Thanks for asking!

I thought capture one was great, until I tried to print things. I really didn't expect Paint Shop Pro levels of bugs and errors in a Photoshop price level program. Phase One should be ashamed.

Especially when Affinity Photo does most everything Photoshop does smoothly for $25 USD on sale.

After years of dorking around with the Xtrans sensor, I am glad to be finally rid of it.

Much like the hot girl in high school, the promise of what it could be falls very short of the reality of what it is... At least that's been my experience. I have no issues with APS-c, and am looking forward to the K33, but the Xtrans is a whole nother ballgame. For just jpegs, no problem. RAW is more complicated than it ever should have been.

My main reason for starting over was new subscribers in the future. I've thrashed around for 10 years trying to figure out what PHOTO UNIVERSE was so much that I fear the "brands" been used up or tainted. Since August and my serious video makeover I've not gained one subscriber on Photo Universe. But about 50% of the Edward Thomas Subscribers are new to me.

But the real fear is that the pool of potential viewers is small and that they already know me from Photo Universe and see my face and say, "Oh God that Pentax jerk again..." There's a gun channel called Yankee Marshall, and he has a lot of subscribers but I can't stand him. If he drastically changed his channel and presentation, I would never know.

Sorry, not up on my Macs. You can buy a PC gamer box for $799 with:
  • Intel i7-10700F 2.9GHz (Max Turbo 4.8 GHz)

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB

  • 16GB DRR4 RAM

  • 240GB SSD + 1TB HDD

Which would blow through almost any 4k video or 60mb stills workflow as well.

6 of one/ half dozen of the other.

It's all about price. At $1995 USD, you have got to be kidding. A Fuji XT-4 is $1795, and a Sony A7r3 was $1995 on sale over the Holidays.

Not everyone needs a full frame, I get that, but I very much doubt the new K33 will have an af system that even comes close to the 4 year old A7r3.

On the other hand, $1700 is competitive in the market today, and at around $1200, I'd be interested.

And sub $1000 I'd pre-order one. But that's me, and now that I have a lot of experience with Fuji and all my needs satisfied with Sony, it would take a lot to lure me back. When you can spend $239USD on a Samyang 35mm f2.8 full frame lens that is tack sharp on a 60mp camera with fast silent accurate AF, it's a brave new world...

So what I'm saying is it looks to be a great camera all around, but price is everything in a very very very competitive marketplace.

[/COLOR]I would also add, that getting 4K (easily) and 42 or 60mp still shots from a FF sensor is a hybrid shooters dream.

My recently acquired A7R3 (for $1995USD) is sharper at 300% then my Fuji XT3 is at 100%. The A7R4 is 100% with a 24x30 inch print. Most people don't need that, I understand. But I sell my prints and have been limited to 12x18's as my biggest size because I just wasn't happy with anything bigger unless I was shooting my 4x5 film camera. The right tool for the right job(s). And I would never buy a full frame for just video work. But as the reason for my video work is capturing stills, hybrid is where it's at for me.

I have a 28" 4K monitor and the difference is pretty obvious as well. You can really see the detail in Thomas Heaton or Ben Horne's sample photos during the videos. My internet used to kinda puke the 4K stuff onto the screen, but I replaced my router and now I can stream 4k all the time no issues.

The 4K workflow is no issue for me either, I buy a big off the shelf gaming PC every few years that just rips through anything. They're usually about $1K USD, while the same spec'd Mac would be around $5k. That's value for money. :) (And I've used Mac's and they are just as big a PIA as PC's but in a different way, pick your poison, for me I'll pay less for the same hassles.)

I just have a standard cable internet connection and I'm in a backwater of NE Oregon (population 2000 in the town I'm in) so I'm either lucky, or it's a benefit of livin' in the USA.

I've REALLY tried to minimize the talking heads stuff on my channel.

I enjoy the travel/photo channels as well.

But I do have to say it's kinda like what my 95 year old dad said after reading a bunch of fantasy novels: "they're always going on journeys, doing stuff, and coming back, it's gets boring." Providing content that's not a photographer with a backpack walking into the frame, complaining about the light or being overly optimistic about the light, taking a photo, and then walking out of the frame, is hard.

Having written that, I realize that my videos need to much more about the photos, because that's really the whole reason to make the videos in the first place. Well first trip is first week of March so we'll see what happens...

Not sure what the shutter is going to be like on the K3 MIII, but I do know that the best digital shutter button I've ever used is on my XPro-3. It's a lot like a Leica M series film camera.

It turns out that Fuji had 1 guy spend a lot of time making sure it was as good as it could get and they documented that here. (It's time coded so you can find the part, the entire video is 1.5 hours long!)

Good to see Pentax paying attention to the details.

I guess the guy responsible for implementing the new SD card protocol was an intern, he only spec'ed 1 UHS-II slot. State of the art - 5 years ago.

Their marketing of all the "attention to details" leaves me a little flat when they overlook something big like the SD cards. Olympus did the same thing, right before the end... DOOOOM :)

K-3III vs K-1II, APS-C vs full frame, which is "best" & price relevance - my thoughts

I've spent more time and technique trying to achieve greater depth of field than I ever have trying to get shallower depth of field and that's for sure.

Pentax is touted as the brand for landscapes. Not a genre that calls for shallow depth of field too often.

I mainly use APS-c for landscapes. But, I use split ND filters in the field which alleviates having to push the shadows drastically in post and I think the results look better, personally.

When I used to shoot weddings, dark churches during the ceremony were shot on a tripod with no flash, formals were shot on a tripod with flash, and receptions were shot with flash. But I have shot a thousand+ weddings (starting professionally in 1985) on film, I just carried on shooting the same way with digital. The main advantage to digital is that at iso 800 your flash batteries last forever! In 1985 with Nicads, I used 4-5 sets of batteries per wedding and that was only less than 200 shots with 50 or so of those shots using monolights plugged into the AC.

In my experience, there is so little difference between an APS-c and FF sensor camera it's not worth worrying about. Either is capable of doing 99% of what the other can do and the last 1% is overshadowed by much larger factors like technique and skill of the photographer as an example.

Shoot what you like, there's no wrong choice unless your unhappy with what you got. :)

Shooting 4x5 film regulary does kind of dampen my enthusiasm for a 10x15mm increase in digital sensor size... from a postage stamp to a 1/4 of a post it note... so I completely understand your feelings on this.:lol:

K5/7/3 L bracket and Arca plate on KP

Just FYI I put my Kirk K5/7/3 Arca plate and L bracket on my KP and they fit and would work. You can't really access the ports with the L bracket, both cover the battery door, and both make it so you can't use the articulating screen. But other than that they fit and work at holding the camera on a tripod. And the L bracket would work for verticals.

The K1 FF is clearly "inferior" to my Intrepid large format film camera by that same logic, and the Intrepid is only $350 USD's. Makes the K1 seem WAY overpriced! :) (Joking of course.)

The price of the K3 III is going to be hard to justify, but not because of anything to do with the K1. Pentax has a historical precedent of high initial MSRP's only to come down by 20-30% within a year or so. The KP was originally $1095, and then dropped to $795 pretty quickly. If the K3 III comes out at $1800 and then has the same 27% drop as the KP that would put it at $1300, which is pretty much where it should be and pretty competitive actually.

And I don't shoot the K1 because of lens considerations, weight and size issues, not price or IQ. My lenses of choice are the 15/21/35/70 Limiteds on a KP. Sometimes with the grip and that's as big a digital camera as I want with a 23 pound 4x5 film camera backpack along for the hike.

---------- Post added 11-23-20 at 10:04 AM ----------

If the difference is at 30x40 inches or larger, I'd politely suggest it's not much of a real benefit for 99.9% of the user base.

Like 4K video (which I've only recently learned.)

I'd argue from my printing experience that lens quality and technique are greater factors to final print quality then aps-c vs FF. And all things being equal (lens quality/technique, the FF advantage would only really become apparent at VERY large size prints, i.e 30x40 or greater. At sizes 20x30 an smaller I personally don't see any difference from my APS-c files vs my FF files. I do see a noticeable difference from my scanned 4x5 large format negatives even at 8x10 size though... (but they are 180 MB equivalent scans so that's not fair at all... :) )

So APS-c is really great and FF is a little tiny bit better is how I'd put it. :)

---------- Post added 11-23-20 at 10:05 AM ----------

And the lenses will be (could be) smaller and lighter.
