Turn off SR for video?

I've picked up a 3-axis brushless gimbal that works very well. All the SR is now done by the newer gimbal technology. Alas, I cannot use my Rode microphone anymore due to clearance issues, so I am looking at a small yet high quality bluetooth transceiver so I can do a shoulder mount shoe and have the microphone on the shoulder rig. Using a cable impacts the SR from the gimbal.

Poll: Daring to talk about canon 700d vs k-70

Video isn't hideous though. While it would be disingenuous to try to place it at the level of any of the current cameras out from Canon, it can do fine for certain situations depending on how to you'll be using the video.

1. First turn off the Movie Shake reduction, it's digital and doesn't use the hardware. This results in strange wobbles when the camera moves, but that will not be a problem with the Movie shake reduction off.
2. The stereo microphone is not really good for much, I'd recommend at Rode VideoMicro. This is the case for any other camera out there though, external microphones will always be a good investment that can be used on any other DSLR or Mirrorless you might purchase in the future.
3. Use a fluid head tripod.

Plan your shots for pulled focus if it's preplanned video. All the top end cine cameras are frequently operated this way, so you'll feel more "pro" :) Practice with video focus plenty prior to your planned event so that you learn what conditions lead to hunting for focus that would be a problem during your shooting, likely you'll switch to AFS and periodically back button focus when needed.

Between the K-70 and my Samsung S7 Edge, I'm finding I've got my own video needs covered. But it's not a meal ticket solution. Again, it depends on what it's for, if it's a lot of walking action type shots? Buy an inexpensive smartphone gimbol (Zhiyun Smooth-Q 3-Axis is every bit as good as the DJI Osmo at half the price) and your smartphone will do all those with aplomb.

For all the rest of my camera needs it's just right. I suspect that it even teaches me to plan better for my photo's. For example, I'm not a pro sports shooter, but with practice I'm getting more keepers than I can store for my families events, both outdoor and indoor. But I did spend extra on some fast Sigma glass too. I can only imagine a Pentax PLM that is 2.8 or faster. I've rarely used the 55-300mm PLM lens I bought, faster lenses with HSM motors still seem to kick it's can. Come on Pentax, I'd pay twice the price for a fast 18-135mm PLM lens even though I've the kit lens that came with the camera.

Oh my goodness!. I've a Sigma 50-500mm that I've been using for lunar photography, it's time to get out there and shoot the sun once I've affixed the appropriate filter of course.

Earlier this year with my K-70 and Bigma 50-500mm. Some sad dust on my image sensor though. Sadly the dust removal feature of the K-70 isn't up to the same standards as the K3-II or K-1, but I am sure to periodically to carefully use a sensor cleaning swab.

I don't have the DA 300mm, but I can say that I've been very happy with my Bigma (HSM OS edition, not prior EX).

How useful is K-70 flip screen?

With the K-70 flash range at 12.0m at ISO 100 versus the 13.0m at ISO 100 for the K-3, there's not significant difference between the two built-in flashes. Personally I'd get the K-70 for the articulating screen and use the on-board flash until you've saved up for a decent external flash. Personally I believe the articulating design of the K-70 is superior to the KP and K-1 in versatility. Granted you can't pickup the camera by the LCD display like the K-1, but why would you?

Flipping the display into the camera also adds that extra level of display protection.

I have a tempered glass protector on my K-70 and have no problems with it at all. It was the JJC GSP-K70 Tempered Optical Glass Screen Protector for Pentax K-70 that I found on Amazon.

Anyone checked how much waterproof is K-70?

Just saw this thread as I'd been away from my PC for a while.

Alas... my 55-300mm PLM needs to be sent in for repair. I managed to find out how much water it takes to be an issue. Lesson learned, the seals won't keep out water if you are changing the focal length, zooming in and out is sufficient to force water in past those gaskets. The lens still functions and can take pictures, but you can see the water spots on the interior of the lens surfaces. It really wasn't that much, just some light Galveston TX rain. I'd had it in much more rain in Seattle, but hadn't been changing focal lengths as it was primarily for outdoor soccer matches. Oh the irony.

However, the K-70 is just fine.

As for my non-WR lenses, because I know they need much more care, have never had this problem. I now have a selection of hoods from lens coat to prevent this in the future, but I'll still have to send in the 55-300mm PLM to precision just waiting for their site to list the lens. I'm currently using my much heavier Sigma 50-500mm OS DG lens and missing the much lighter weight of the prior lens.

Reasons why I bought the K70

Since the K-70 works with old the vintage K mount lenses as well as the new KAF 4 with electronic aperture, then the K-70 does a great job of addressing from the lens perspective.

Pentax K-70

I've had my K-70 since near the end of last August.

I had previously used a K-50, so it's difficult to contrast to a non-Pentax DSLR as primarily all former cameras were film SLRs. I did use a series of Canon EOS Rebel G Film camera bodies and lenses prior to moving to the Digital. As I've a strong interest in Astrophotography (used an Olympus OM-1 for it's mechanical bulb feature to ensure no long term exposure failures due to power loss) as well as for a larger variety of terrestrial images. Researching greatly attracted me to the Pentax line for the use of the Astrotracer functionality, which has been working great. I continue to use the O-GPS1 module that I'd purchased around the time of the K-50 with my K-70 and the functionality is great. That and I still have built-in flash for fill in lighting during daytime exposures with backlighting.

Long term I'll be likely transitioning to Full Frame, but that will also involve looking at a series of professional flashes as the K-1 and K3-II both require an external flash while the GPS moved into the camera body.

The stellar low light performance along with the Astrotracer functionality has really been the primary reason I'll continue to be a long term Pentax user. While using a barndoor mount (a device that essentially replicates the Astrotracer function external to the camera body) is possible with other vendors products, quality results can really require a much higher expense.

Poll: K70 to KP Value?

The ISO range is really a gimmick. Several reviews show that there is very little discernable difference between the IQ of the K-70 and KP.

If the SR and AF features are sufficient enticement, then maybe.

Of course, I already have a K-70 and I'm awaiting the future K3II replacement or simply saving up for a K-1. One wonders if a possible firmware fix may be down the road for improved hybrid AF. The KP doesn't even have that.

K-70 maximum card size?

I'm using a much larger SDXC card, but I see that the question changed to a K20D. On the K-70, has anyone tried an SDXC larger that 128GB, which is what I'm using now. Best practice seems to be using a larger number of smaller SD cards in the event that one fails, so perhaps even if the capability is there, it's best to have a bunch of 32GB in the event there are failures. Just not sure if the swapping cards while in the elements might not lead so some of those failures. If I was doing this for more than leisure, I'd probably be better off with a camera model that supports dual cards for redundancy like the K3II.

Thoughts?

Granted it won't work with your existing tablet, as I've not seen one that has an HDMI input, only an output, but at least there is a few not too expensive options. Namely external HDMI field monitors.

The $200 Lilliput 7-Inch 5d-ii/h 1080p 7 Inch Field Monitor even includes an mount to fit in a hotshoe on a DSLR camera along with support for an external battery and supports 4K HDMI input even if the display is not 4K. There are several others including a really low quality but cheap $50 option.

Sigma zooms and possible autofoucus problems?

I have the 50-500mm DG OS HSM and find it to be a fantastic lens, the 150-500mm is less expensive but still a very high quality lens and may actually be slightly sharper at the larger focal lengths than the 50-500mm. I'm just lazy, so having more reach was the reason I selected the 50-500mm. If you purchase Sigma for either of your selections you listed, I'm sure you'll be quite happy. Especially with the firmware fixes you can receive.

Would be nice if the USB dock supported those lenses to also allow you to manually update the firmware yourself, but Sigma has good service references so you should have fast resolution to the issue if your lens purchase is not already current when you purchase it.

Not sure, but I'm using several 128GB cards and it its UHS-I compatible but it's speed is around 30Mbs so while you don't want a slow card, the limit is the camera's write speed.

Tablet suggestions and advice/Image Transmitter 2

Be careful of Windows 10 tablets, the OS is not necessarily always the same. The smaller screen variety are typically loaded with Windows 10 "32bit edition" and so Adobe's latest versions are 64bit only so the older versions will install instead. I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro with Windows 10 Pro installed on it, but found I was limited in the versions that Adobe Creative Cloud would install because of that reason.

Personally, what tablet you pick should be based on the software you'll use. I have a Windows 10 (Dell Venue 8 Pro), Google Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and a Dell Latitude. I am considering donating the Dell Venue 8 Pro as I hardly use it any more. The Google is stuck on Jelly Bean but has an amazing screen for the Play Newsstand, so I can read my magazines in full screen format. Just realize with Android, even if you go with a costly Google product (Pixel C), you shouldn't expect more than a revision or two of the OS since the purchase of your device. Windows systems do seem to hold up better, but yes they do cost more for a 64bit edition.

Pentax KP Continous focus test

I'm most certain you checked this, but when I found that my focus was off on all of my lenses I corrected the diopter on the viewfinder. Again, I'm sure you did do that, but as others could be new to DSLRs in general, it bears reminding to check the diopter for their benefit too.

Thank you for your tests. Any chance you also checked AFC in terms of video to see if that's improved over the K70?

Imaging Resource: Ricoh’s “Multi-Imaging Technology” pairs a K-1 with a Theta S

No need, the hi-resolution solution is the stitched in K-1 images as demonstrated. Perhaps that was missed from the article.

I have frequently looked at low quality 360 images on Redfin and Zillow and would see the value. With this solution the details you wish to indicate would be the top end K-1 images possibly even pixel shift in that smooth scroll around environment.

I'd buy both products, K-1 and a Theta S for this feature. Real estate photography would be a great market for the resulting 360 hi-resolution images.

This is the new paradigm that Fujifilm customers are raving about. Pentax should follow form with software updates to stay competitive with Fujifilm. Embrace "Kaizen" Fujifilm's Frequent Firmware Updates and the Philosophy of Kaizen

Updating for more than just lens compatibility brings good will that will help ensure loyal customers more likely to purchase the next generation of product rather than moving to a competitor because of the good will. The K-1 brining features like Night mode from the K-70 was a good start, let's hope Ricoh continues the trend.

As per the recent CP+ 2017 article, the KP and K-1 are looking at a future update to bring SR (not the software version) to video with a future firmware upgrade. Like the KAF4 came to a number of earlier models, here's hoping that the same is done for the K-70.
