For noise reduction I have found that this youtube movie:

You Tube

to be quite informative / impressing about the possibilities of denoising in Darktable (specially relating to high iso denoising).

Relating to speeding Darktable I also have found that turning off all denoising modules used in a photo and just activating them before outputting the final image I get the fastest responding Darktable.
Still, for processing my K-S2 files, I have to use this tip just once in 200 photos or so (2016 generation i5 laptop with 6 gigs of ram and 1 terabyte of HD), so Darktable 2.6.1 is fast enough for me as it is.

New Darktable version (2.6.1) is out

The announcement can be read here: [darktable-user] darktable 2.6.1 released

This new version (an detailed information about what is new /corrected) can be obtain directly from GitHub: Release darktable 2.6.1 released · darktable-org/darktable · GitHub

I use the Windows version, have installed it and everything looks ok.

Note: the “normal” direct connection for downloading the Windows and MacOS version in the Darktable website (install | darktable) is not yet updated – still points to the 2.6.0 version. Probably will be updated to the new version in a day or two.

Covering the spectrum from ultra wide to moderate tele with the K-1

My advice is: go with the cheap option but with a twist.

So instead of the proposed tele choose:

1 – Tamron 70-200 f2.8
or
2 – wait a bit for the new Pentax 70-200 f4.0 to come out this spring (if they put it out in the time stated in the new lens roadmap), see what is the price and the reviews from users, and if the what is expected at quality level and the price is right, go with it.

Note: I do not have the K1, so this is just a “if I was on your shoes...) advice.

One more for the TZ70 (ZS50 in the US).

Bought one last August new (159 euros) and I keep on being very pleased with its photos.

12 Megapixels, as said above shoots raw, has all the possibilities as DSLR have – aperture, shutter, manual, etc… it even has a viewfinder (for me decision maker).

Can do ISO 80 to 6400 - above 1600 is almost useless and any other setting besides 80 as to have noise reduction -… but using Define from Nik Collection or the (several) possibilities of noise reduction in Darktable, and there aren’t much photos that cannot get it quite well recovered.

My advice (and continuing the trend…): Darktable.

Powerful, sophisticated, free and had a delicious upgrade just 3 days ago.

Extraordinary goodies to come with the new version 2.6 (around Christmas!) as one can check by the “on development” article at darktable 2.6 | darktable

Note 1 - the expected publication date of the article is “Mon 24 December 2018”, so one can expect the release of this new version of Darktable around that date.

Note 2 – the first release candidate “darktable 2.6.0rc0” is out; more info can be had at [darktable-user] darktable 2.6.0rc0 released.

You will not spend time but, instead, earn a lot (time and much) more, trust me...

As according to Abraham Lincoln:
«Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.»

See my post here:

Spend some time seeing all the youtube posts advised in the two channels (preference with Darktable open too for testing what you see on the videos) and you will be confident in using Darktable fast.

For the beginners (and more advanced users too) my advice is to check (and follow) the extraordinary work of two Darktable users are doing, posting small, simple but detailed information about the functionalities and tools of Darktable on youtube.

They are:
Bruce Williams

You Tube

and
HPBirkeland
HPBirkeland Photography - YouTube

One of the best part about these two situations is the presentation in a systematic way of types of editing – noise reduction, sharpening, using masks, etc… -, showing many times in detail, all the possibilities available in Darktable for each type of editing - and everybody, who uses Darktable knows that there are, normally, several different tools available to do one type of editing.

I stand by Darktable (windows) - I use it for all my raw processing, including noise reduction.

Another option is, if you still can lay your hands on it, Nik Collection (I use the old free version).
Dfine2 is my go by for extreme noise reduction necessities when Darktable is not enough.

Relating the not working with the K1 part, I cannot help you as I do not have the K1.

Relating the firmware, here is the webpage in English: Yongnuo Photographic Equiment Co., Ltd (the one I have posted in post #7 above does not work anymore).

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

Just put it in f4.0 and shoot away!
