Travelling with MF - how much kit do you carry?

For travel with MF, I’ve found the key is to have the right bag for the airline and hotel part, then have another bag for the actually photography part.

I pack my Z, DFA35, DFA55 and FA80-160, Canon 5D4 with Ultra-wide and primes, filters and accessories into a Thinktank Airport Navigator with my laptop etc, and then pack a photo backpack (filled with clothes) into my large travel suitcase. When I arrive at my hotel I remove my photo backpack and prepare it for photography, swapping gear in and out before each outing. I also have a small photo shoulder bag that can take my 5D4 with one lens for general walk around.

Then, I travel very light during the day when site seeing with my wife and I only venture out for serious photos at sunrise and sunset/evening. This maximizes quality time with my wife vs me getting good images. I use the time during the day to scope out good locations for the coming afternoon and following morning.

Because I’ve already scoped out the place that I’ll be shooting, sometimes I will only take the Z and 1 lens to that particular location.

pentax 645 system outlook...

I think that the OP is trying to say that he invested in what he thought was going to be an ongoing growing system, but since there has been no meaningful updates, lenses, bodies, news and signs of life since late 2014 (apart from a re-released DFA35), he now feels that he’s invested in a system that is going nowhere.

Regardless of whether or not it can still do what he wants, there is a valid point to be made.

Also, when you know that you can have the same level of performance from a new body less than half the weight, with lenses that your system simply can’t offer, you can’t blame him for looking.

I see some validity in your thoughts.

Firstly, if Pentax simply throws the 100mp crop sensor into a 645z body, then yes there is no reason at all to stay with the Pentax system. There simply is no advantage in doing so.

I have used both the Hasselblad X1D and the Fuji GFX and I can’t stand the Fuji system. The cameras are clunky to use. I need more time with the Hasselblad to fully form an opinion.

I am waiting for the new Hasselblad X Mark II to arrive before making a final decision, and I could even just end up with a FF mirrorless system and leaving MF altogether.

Compared to the Pentax 645 lenses, actually not really at all.

Pentaxís current DFA 645 lenses, the 28-45, 35 and 90mm are quite expensive, more so than the Fuji lenses.

I understand your position fully on budgets etc. once you are committed to using 645 then itís not so bad.

If I end up selling the 645z, the difference will be less than $7000 easy.

Like I said though, still not sure about it all as the Fuji workings might not suit me based on a couple of things Iíve read.

Pentax do need to really pull out the stops and get on with it.

Not looking for an increase in IQ, but an increase in usability and weight. The GFX-50R has electronic first curtain shutter, plus an EVF, plus itís less than half the weight and has a 23mm lens available that takes filters.

There is a lot of positives. Iíll be testing one next week, still not sure if Iíll switch though.

And BTW Iím not looking for blazing PDAF as everything is mostly manual focus anyway.

Ed yes these adapters exist. Both with and without aperture control from Fotodiox.

No AF though, but that’s not an issue for what I use the 645 system for anyway.

At this stage I am considering the sale of my 645Z, keeping all my lenses and perhaps purchasing a Fujifilm GFX-50R for use with my D-FA and FA lenses via an adapter.

I do not need more than 50mp for any of my work, but a more realistic current age lighter camera would go well.

I am not convinced that the current Pentax 645 system will continue in the form that we know it as. Also, I am not sure that I would want a full frame 645 system, as getting deep depth of field is even more difficult and lenses need to be even better quality, which Pentax's aren't really, at least not the FA lenses that are rolling around.

Good luck.
Compared to the flatter field of the DFA35, I found the 28-45 to have some forward field curvature towards the edges which can be used to your advantage when taking landscape shots with deep DOF, you can focus point deeper into the image and the foreground still sharpens up when stopping down sufficiently.

I would get the 645D no question if you are coming from film.

Focus is critical with the 645D for getting the right DOF, but I am sure that you have that covered coming from full size medium format film.

The dynamic range of the 645D is actually very good at base ISO, I have taken some stunning images with that camera and been able to recover shadows easily.

Just beware that your current 645 lenses will not be as wide angle on the 645D due to the crop sensor.

645 D-FA 35mm lens Infinity Focus

Hi all,

Just a call out to anybody here that has the new D-FA 35mm lens for 645 and can offer some insight into this lens for me.

I purchased a used copy and for all intents and purposes it is excellent.

However, to achieve manual focus out to infinity in live view, I have to rack the focus ring all the way to the hard end stop, well past the center of the infinity mark.

Can anybody here confirm if their lens is the same, or if my lens perhaps needs reconfiguration by the service department.

Thanks, Scott

Rollsman, so I read on LULA that you’ve bought a Nikon Z7 rather than a 645Z.

How do you like it?

To make the 645D/Z LCD screen look right when outdoors you need to ramp up the LCD backlight, making your exposures look more exposed than they are. Try reviewing all images on the camera with the histogram, it will give you a better understanding of the exposure

Best to read up on how to read a histogram too, there are varying opinions on this forum on which is the best histogram to achieve in your raw file to begin the editing process. If shooting JPG only then you need to perfect the image in camera. I suggest shooting RAW on the 645D, you will get superior results if you edit later in LR or similar.

100mp 44x33mm Medium Format Sensor

I find I tend to tap out at around 18mm on FF, anything wider than that and the images tend to get a bit boring.

An ideal landscape kit for me is 18mm, 24-28mm, 40-50mm, 80-90mm and then a zoom such as a 100-400.

With a high res 50mp camera I can crop for anything in between when using the primes and get fantastic results.

Rick, one thing about lenses and sharpness. I am a hobbyist shooter and part of the fun for me is achieving technically excellent images with outstanding sharpness and contrast, it’s about getting the technical part right in the field. I get great joy from it even if the image comes out average from an artistic standpoint. So good quality lenses are important to the enjoyment of my hobby and many others.

They should also be considered important from a manufacturer standpoint.

100mp 44x33mm Medium Format Sensor

I am not sure anybody ever asked for a 1.5kg semi-wide angle zoom that cost $4600, is f/4.5 and is only a DA design. As good as it is, its still a big-ass lens.

Considering they have the excellent DFA35mm, a newly designed 23 prime f/4 would be fine for landscape work.

For that same weight of 1.5kg, I would have preferred a useful sharp ultra-wide that was lighter and a second lens at 35mm.

I prefer good quality zooms over primes for landscape work as you can act quickly under changing light with a zoom. So I would like to see Pentax do what Fuji is doing, a 45-100 and 100-200, plus a wide prime that takes filters of 18mm equivalent.

Those two zooms are on the Pentax roadmap but never happened.

It’s quite clear and obvious that the 100mp crop sensor is coming to a Fuji near you. So I’m sure they will go with that, but in 2019 not really have anything class leading. It’s hard to know where it will sit.

I should clarify my statement as I did not really convey my thoughts.

I was meaning in the Fuji size being big in relation to certain lenses in both the Pentax and Hasselblad range.

For example the 120 from Fuji is ridiculous compared to the Pentax 120.

The Fuji 23mm is quite a bit larger than the Hasselblad 21mm, itís just bigger and harder to hold when mounting.

I think it’s Pentax’s 100th anniversary in 2019. I’ve made the decision that if they release nothing new in both MF body and lenses next year then I am out. It’s already been over 4 years since the 645z launched and no new roadmapped lenses at all.

BUT, I won’t be moving to Fuji either. Their system isn’t worth it. The lenses are huge and the usability of the GFX50s isn’t great in my view. Plus the files aren’t as good as Pentax RAWs, it’s like there’s something baked into them, they aren’t clean.

I will consider moving to the replacement camera for the Hasselblad X1D when it comes. Their lens lineup is much superior and the files are nicer. But it’s very expensive and I’m not sure I need it.

But then again, if Canon releases a high MP Full frame sensor in the EOS R body with good DR I may just stick with that as I have heaps of Canon glass and operationally Canon bodies are superb.

Only time will tell.

Just to correct you, you’re wrong on the LR front. Lightroom Classic CC subscription keeps all your files on your local PC, not on the cloud.

I use it and it’s lovely, so no stress. You can get it for about $9 US per month I think, about the price of 2 cups of coffee.

You do realize you can set the camera to save raw files as DNG or PEF. Perhaps just use DNG then pick up a single version of the old Lightroom that works with the Z. You can then create a Colorchecker profile for Lightroom and you are done.

This is exactly what I have done, except I use the subscription version of LR and PS for work and play.

645 Panorama Stiching with D-FA 35mm

Hi,
I have a used D-FA 645 35mm lens on the way to use with my 645z. Just wondering if anybody here has done any panorama stitching with this lens?

I am looking to do mainly just single row panoramas of 2-3 images with the camera in either landscape or portrait orientation, so nothing awfully difficult. I just want to get images that are similar image width to a 17mm lens for those times when I do not have my Canon 5D4 and 16-35mm lens with me, or when I need critical resolution and dynamic range.

Just looking to see if there is any "gotchas" I need to look out for with this particular lens, such as vignette or distortion correction. Also if anybody knows the nodal point distance that would help out a bit too.

Thanks, Scott
