Amazon suck.

Amazon is only the latest in a very long line of large, discount retailers who have thrived by underpricing the previous businesses. Eventually Amazon will have elbowed out the majority of the competition and will begin to raise their prices because they are effectively the only one left. At that point another business will begin their own climb to the top of the heap and will begin elbowing Amazon out. Recently Amazon has had the upper hand but their stock will begin to wilt as the market becomes less satisfied with their growth and they will eventually find it difficult, then impossible, to maintain their position.

The cycle just continues. Witness the sad fate of Sears/K-Mart who, in their day, were also the great big gorillas in the marketing jungle. Picking on their employees may make you feel better, but it makes no difference. Likewise sacrificing and paying more to "save the little guy" is a wonderful thought but probably hurts you, the individual consumer, far more than it helps the little guy.

Right now it is online companies who are on top. Amazon, Google, Apple, E-Bay, Paypal, Facebook and a few others have managed to fight their way to the top and they are the ones we all like to pick on. But, one thing about the internet, what used to take decades to happen now seems to happen in just a few years. A lot of those common household names may be history within the next 10 years and our grandchildren's children will never have heard of them.

Q system not dead? Ehhh. . .

I had a nice little bridge camera, I think it was a Sony, that I gave away after I picked up my Q. Nice little camera but the flexibility of the Q was more useful for me and I quit using the Sony all together.

I picked up the K/Q adaptor as well and I used some pretty long glass in the beginning. Now I am using my FA 135/2.8 or my DA 100 Macro but not much else. Those two give me plenty of reach for what I do and I can still pretend that I can handhold them in good light. (Handholding with those two lenses usually turns out ok if I don't try and print too big; but I get a lot of failures as well.)

Lately I have my original Q set to monochrome with the yellow filter and a 1:1 aspect ratio. Its' a novelty for sure but I am having fun with it. Trying to get better at composing with the wide angle zoom but I still need a whole lot of practice. :)

Yeah. An improved LCD would certainly be nice as long as battery life doesn't get worse.

The odd fact about image quality is that I have never, ever had anyone tell me that the prints I handed them were deficient whether the image was captured with my Q, my Q7, K10D or my K5iis. I quit worrying about Q image quality in prints a LONG time ago.

Composition is still a far more important thing to worry about but camera reviewers don't seem to test for that. :D

Works great. A little expensive to purchase upfront but it lasts so long (50 rolls or more per quart of developer) that it is about as cheap as it comes for a developer.

Just don't contaminate Solution A with any Solution B and it will last halfway to forever.

Beyond the manual setting problem the idea of using some of my Takumar lenses with the K-01 is intriguing.

I need to spend some time playing with this setup. I like M42 Takumar lenses and I love the K-01. The combination should be terrific.

One of the few threads that I truly enjoy catching up on whenever I can. The photos are always beautiful. Thank you all for taking the time to post your wonderful work.

Winter is coming on (snow on the ground yesterday) and I am not interested in developing any color film in my freezing garage for a bit. So the K10D is out on the table again and will substitute nicely for the K1000 for the next few months.

All the talk of Takumars a few pages back has inspired me to hook up my newly acquired Tak 24. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll take some time outdoors to see what comes of it.

I guess I am a bit confused as to how a K-1 would improve those shots. They already look pretty good to me.

No offense intended to the full frame crowd but Pentax's APS-C cameras are still awesome tools.

Brooke is obviously a very, very capable artist.

It will be very, very difficult to find a better lens than that solid Pentax standby, the SMC FA 50mm f1.4 whether you are using digital or film. Especially at the price that Ricoh is selling that lens for new.

And I for one will be interested to hear your report.

But I know that I won't be turning loose of my 31 Limited anytime soon. It not only looks good on digital but it still renders just as beautifully on Portra as it always has.

Enjoy your new camera. Fuji has done a really good job of developing and building some extremely nice digital cameras. Lots of people move to smaller and lighter cameras. Perhaps you should consider moving entirely to a cell phone since that is even smaller and lighter.

I seriously doubt that the dSLR will be going anywhere soon. Digital camera sales are dropping off of a cliff for everyone. The only thing that seems to be growing is Fuji's Instax camera brand. The internet talking heads certainly did not see that coming and a very large majority of them still don't seem to know what to make of it. They love to speculate but they rarely, if ever, see any of the major trends coming, let alone predict them in advance so I don't pay too much attention to their babbling. They can be entertaining though.

I know even less than the internet babblers but I think that Canon and Nikon are just hedging their bets in an effort to continue to maintain their historical dominance in the camera market. Sony has been pretty successful lately and it has gotten hard for them to ignore that some of their customers have been moving over to Sony. It is entirely possible that their new cameras (which by the way are no way near as small or as light even as the Pentax K-1) will begin to cannibalize the sales of their current slr camera lines while failing to attract any new customers. No one really knows how this is going to work out for them.

Heck, with Fuji moving into medium format in a big way you might be able to prognosticate that larger than full frame will the new wave of the future as sensors get better and larger. It is even possible that both Nikon and Canon are eyeing this new market as well considering that their new lens flanges will very easily cover medium format sensors.

Internet talking heads have declared Pentax dead before and have turned out wrong. Ricoh is making some extremely nice cameras, and IMHO is doing a very good job of keeping the Pentax brand alive and vibrant, particularly in this current market. Sometimes being a copycat and following all the latest fads is not the best way to run a business. They already dabbled with mirrorless and it didn't seem to work out very well for them.

One thing I think we can certainly say for sure, the immediate future of the digital camera industry is going to be very interesting to watch! :D

Save a few more pennies and find a used 30/1.8 Limited. Not sure if your camera can focus it fast enough since it is screw focus but my K-5iis has no problem.

Landscape South Fork Canyon of the Humboldt River

The South Fork of the Humboldt River moves sluggishly through its steep canyon on the way to join the main river. This was the route taken by the ill-fated Donner Party as they struggled toward their unintended rendevous with infamy. They traveled along this very stream in mid to late September in 1846. Over 170 years seems like a long time ago but things change very slowly in this desert country. This is the very type of view that they would have seen as they pushed through the canyon.

I just wish it were enough to convince Ricoh to bring a new Q with further improved sensor technology to market.

Not to mention continuing to bolster the lens line.

I really do believe that this little system has still more potential for photographers then has yet been shown.

Yeah. Some sellers don't want to have to pay for the service that Paypal provides.

I never could figure that out. Paypal fees are just part of doing business. I will not purchase from someone who asks me to lie and send them the money "as a friend."

Since being involved in the Photobucket fiasco I don't trust any of them.

I started hosting my own images on-line and I have promised myself I will not raise my fees for doing so nor will I sell out to anyone else.

So far I have been thrilled with my service. :D

Love that K1000 LesDMess. It looks exactly like the SE that I have been shooting for years.

And you are certainly right about the MX viewfinder. I let my MX go awhile back but my LX viewfinder is at least as beautiful as the one on the MX. It is a fact that the viewfinder in the K1000, nice as it is, cannot compete in this league. Of course there was a tiny difference in the prices between the K1000 and the MX back in the day.

Of all the SLR cameras I have used I like the viewfinders in the LX, the MX and the Olympus OM 1 the best. They made focusing and composing a real joy.

I think I have to disagree with you on this one Ben. I own three V3800n cameras that were purchased for my grandchildren to use. Although you are right about the shutter speed and the flash synch (and it also includes a timer that lifts the mirror 10 seconds before the shutter fires.) The light diodes for the metering is also a bit easier to see then the needle at night. But there is more to consider in a student camera than just features, nice as they seem.

Two of the cameras have broken strap lugs which happens to be a common fault with this camera (and a few others that Cosina built.) One of the cameras fell from my granddaughter's shoulder and hit the ground lens down. The UV filter was smashed and though the lens did survive, it has a very stiff focus now since I suspect the helical is slightly jammed. For me this is not really terrific performance for the money spent.

Say what you will, the K1000 is quite a bit tougher than this, it had to be to put up with students over its very long production run. If the K1000 had been this fragile it certainly would not have lasted in production as long as it did, and it would not have built up the reputation it enjoys.

Personally I would have been further ahead buying a couple of K1000s, replacing the seals, and letting them use them. At least I would have something to sell once they moved on. Even broken K1000 cameras have some resale value. V3800ns...not so much. But, you spend your money and you take your chances.

Do you typically buy parts only cameras of any kind off of e-bay expecting the result you got here? It happens but it is unusual to say the least. I just did a search on e-bay and found a parts camera for $23.47 USD (with shipping) and the door was missing. Not too much chance the camera will work without the door. Though it did have the flash socket cover you were interested in.

The ones that were supposed to work started out at $73 and change (including shipping again) (which I may bid on btw) but that is hardly in the price levels that you are mentioning.

K1000 cameras are commonly listed at very low prices but if they work they tend to get bid on which usually (not always) brings the prices up much higher. They are just more popular and they have a justifiably good reputation.
