Challenging the APS-C Flagship Series

I'm a left eye shooter, with glasses, and at night it's quite annoying, sometimes being blinding if I forget to turn off the preview and am already on night vision.
I'm constantly turning it off if I'm using the KP (no top LCD for adjustments). Night mode helps with the blinding, but it's always distracting.
Must be something in the way you use your camera, that you don't have a problem when most people do, and they even add a sensor to deal with it (hope it's not for a touchscreen).

Is there a list of all the little things that Pentax has that others don't, like TAv mode? Would night mode and mount LEDs be there? Maybe there should be.

You're mixing concepts.
A better sensor doesn't necessarily mean more MP, it could be better dynamic range or noise, both of which aren't helped by increased MP.
Current trend seems to be improving DR and noise over generations, not MP. Current APS cameras are around 20-26, with no signs of increasing.
They're talking about improved noise, so don't expect a big increase in MP, if any, even with an improved processor.

How much are willing to shell out for Knew?

Things (besides the unknown specs) pushing the initial price towards K1 level:
-low volume (all the reasons have been discussed here)
-differentiation (only APS DSLR manufacturer)
-moving towards premium (the "photography experience")
-fanbase desire

I wouldn't be surprised with a /1400-1500 initial price. Maybe more if the silver version is available at release.

Considering they've already angered, or just plain shunned, lots of potential buyers, by dropping the flippy screen for silly reasons, they'll need to excel in at least one of the perennial user complaints, AF or video, to be able to sell it at a price anywhere close to K1.
Not many current users will care much about it without either serious AF improvements, or 4k video.
Also, they won't stand up in comparisons without 4k, so potential new users will see it as old tech, as there's this strange tendency to associate stills quality with video quality.

Without these things, it'll be a repeat of the K1, where lots of reviewers would say it's a great camera at a great price, even beating more expensive cameras, but the things that people (choosing a system) view as a sign of advanced technology, like AF and video, are 2nd rate, thus making those new buyers discard it.
Potential new users will care more about 4k and flippy screen than a few mm/g in the camera's size/weight, so they're already sabotaging themselves by trading flippy for size. Maybe a sign that they're not improving video, and just seeing it as a little extra for emergencies.
I hope they're setting themselves up for action photography by improving the AF, as that'll offset the loss of flippy/video connection point of interest to new users. Leica has the reputation to survive as a niche player, Pentax/Ricoh doesn't.

I'll only be looking at AF, as I take the IQ improvements as certain, and I have the KP for the flippy screen and small size, so not fazed by the loss of flippy.
AF will be a deal breaker for me, no matter if the price is half or the same as K1.

I think the "excessive" use of K3 mk3 in this forum would be given (in Pentax board meetings) as a reason against that.

Nice, but too big. And companies don't like to tie their products to dates (Windows...)

Since it is a big (in importance) APS camera, it could be called KAPS.

I always wondered why I was hearing a shutter when choosing electronic shutter [to save the shutter when shooting static subjects].
It'd be nice if Pentax added an option to turn off the mec. shutter.

Same here. And for the lenses, even under heavy rain.

Once, with just mild rain, a guy passing by commented that he did that with his Sony and it died.
He walked on before I had time to reply "That's why they say 'It's a Sony!'"

Interesting, because in CameraVille (please don't shoot me :) ) some people were suggesting the new Pentax should be priced around the same as the 90D (1200). I did think that price would be silly if they'd done more than just add the KP innards to the K3, but comparing a new camera to a eol'd one is a bit too much.
But then, I've seen people here suggesting even less than that

If you're not thinking of Portugal (for the Kona), you can add it to your list.
But we still call the other a Pajero, as it doesn't mean anything to us. I laughed when I found out about it.

I think they learned their lesson with the Chevy Nova...

Two things that it's apparently missing:
- metering area selector, a la K5. I really miss that on the KP. Have to use the third wheel or the menu :P
-3rd wheel and mode selection by lever, a la KP. Using a big wheel just for mode selection is just plain dumb. KP had it right
-grey body (that's actually a certainty)

One improvement over the KP (back to Kn roots) are the protruding buttons. Those flush buttons in the KP are a pain in the dark, or when you're in a hurry to find them.

PENTAX KP IR online

If you build it, they will come...

Aaaaand another missed opportunity by Pentax... My wallet was getting itchy, until I saw the business only limitation :(.
OEM IR photography, with no hassles but some visible light filters. A dream [not!] come true.

Don't know if the peeping is the real reason to not sell it to the general public, but it does make sense [in a mad, mad world].
As for liability, I don't see knife manufacturers being sued in the UK, or gun manufacturers anywhere else, so who knows how far that'd fly.
Although, in a world where people blame others for their choices/actions, and it's accepted, it wouldn't surprise me.

So, they don't put out something we want and can buy (K3...), but instead something we want and are not allowed to buy. Not nice...

Carry on... waiting... for Pentax... to give us at least a Christmas present (even if we're the ones paying for it).

The reason for the typos is simple:
everyone and their mother is working on the new APS camera, so that leaves only the kids do do the proof reading.
Simple.

Can't Pentax make a good cheap zoom?

Cheap is relative. But I get your point.
I think the age of good and cheap is gone, with the current move towards fast lenses, like the DA* 11-18 f2.8.
Unless they revive the Ltd series (not cheap, but nothing like my example, and good value), or just realise that some (lots of) people don't need f1.4, you (and me) are s..t out of luck.
I'd like something better than my Sigma 10-20, but not at 3x the price, partly because of an aperture I don't need. If Pentax made a slower 11-18, which would(?) put it at 2x the Sigma$, I'd get it.
Don't know if it's in your FL range, but I like the 16-85 a lot.

What are your thoughts on developing high quality (150-450 or better), but slow(er) lenses?

I don't mind the bulk, but paying 1399 USD/GPB/EUR just to have f2.8 in a 11-18, no thank you. Buildings and trees don't move fast enough to make it worth my money.
Keep it big if necessary, but bring the price down with the aperture, please.

There's a narrow range where I find stupidity to be funny.
Everything in that story, except the above quote which is actually not stupid, is way beyond that limit, so I cannot laugh with the rest of you, just roll my eyes all the way to the back of my head.

P.S.: Don't you (also) have to know your tools to be considered an artist? Isn't that what makes a difference between being just curious (maybe even talented) or being an artist?

No offence taken.
But SLI wasn't part of the equation. Yes, I can do calculations, or use a website for PSU calculations ;) , and they give [the SLI] around 900W power draw (but their recommended PSU is strangely only 1kW). 1.3kW not a waste then.
But without SLI 750W is fine.
Anyway, it's just friendly advice, you know what you want to do with your computer.

Just don't forget to replace those SATA SSDs with PCIe ones if you're doing video editing, or you'll be doing lots of crosswords while your GPUs wait for them.

Yes, you do get 100% output from PSU.
If you're thinking about the rated efficiency, an efficiency of 80% means that a (1000W for example) PSU will be consuming around [1000/.7=] 1400W at full load (they don't have max efficiency at full load), and around [900/.8=] 1125W at 90% (900W) load.
But what you should look at is really the rated power. Don't be fooled into buying a 750W (600/.8) Bronze 80% PSU if you decide you need 600W (400 + smart over-provisioning).
That said, nothing wrong whatsoever with buying a 750W PSU when your estimated power draw is around 400W (your example above). That'll keep it running cool and extend longevity.
But 3 times the estimated power draw is unnecessary, and won't give you more reliability.

P.S.:Higher efficiency rating is good for your pocket, and maybe as an indication of component quality, but you can also find some forums with advice on best/worst brands (no comment on your choice of brand, only the power)
