525, final call. This camera is worth more than 500 to me, so I'll just keep it after that.

K-7 (or K20D) owners with DA35: How is AF?

I upgraded from a K10D to K-7 just this week actually, mostly because of AF problems, although it was a 43mm limited that put me over the edge. I could not for the life of me, debug adjustments or not, get it to focus correctly at 1.9.

I have a DA35 as well and it is a whole new lens on the K-7. I would miss focus a bit on the K10D and it would rack all the way out and in. Not only is the K-7 much faster at doing that, it rarely does a complete miss.

DA35 on the K10D was a lot of hold the af button, click click click click, click, click, click.. click ... click as it slowly zeros in on focus. Even then sometimes it wasn't correct and I would hit the AF button a few more times to see if it was its final answer. I used it like this for a year, and got my own share of PPG shots out of it.

The other good news is that quick shift is amazing in live view and movie mode. You don't have to reach down and flip the AF/MF switch when you are doing manual macro stuff, just focus and fire.

I use a hoya pro1 cpl without any vignetting, although I am almost always stopped down when I'm using it. It sits flush with where the hood normally ends, and I can't pull the hood out because of the grip on the cpl

It is annoying screwing the DA15 stock lens cap into it and having it turning the cpl ;)

I love pentax for making all these 49mm threaded lenses, I only have one polarizer for 7 lenses

I used to have the 16-45 and have also noticed the terrible da15 bokeh for super-wide-close shots. I went back to find a picture at 16mm f4 to compare with, and I came up with this. They aren't good pictures, just crap in my lightroom

DA16-45 Taken after driving through Arizona:

So I tried to recreate it with the DA15, although I didn't get it totally lined up.

The good news is: my car is much cleaner now

The problem seems to me that the light distribution in the circles is uneven, the light is pushed out to the borders of the circle leaving it hollow and sharp.

f4.5 is a bit better to me, the harshness of the circles goes down a bit and returns some light to the center. Not much, just a little.

Here is a shot from work that came out terrible at f4
DA15 f4:

At f8 it looks better (to me)
DA15 f8:

But I can't leave with just that, check this out

DA15 Hyperfocal f5.6 like 3 feet away from the target

100% crop (K10D 10MP)

16-45 has no depth of field scale, and on my K10D hyperfocal is much more accurate. I am in manual focus 95% of the time on this lens
If weird f4 bokeh is what it takes to get that kind of performance, I'm in

Only 2 shots in 4416 of my 16-45mm pictures used that close-wide-f4 effect at 16mm, most of the depth of field jerky pictures were at the longer end of 45mm, where I have a 43mm limited now ;)

Well as long as everyone else is doing it

Train station shot with the lights on top (I actually photoshopped the burnt out lights to light up, is that cheating? Copy and flip horizontal!) is hand held, f4 1/8 @ iso400

Aha, found the real parts

Method: use swiffer to sweep floor dust into a pile, then apply neodymium magnet

I played carpet patrol and didn't find it, however there is an old konica 50mm here that I can't use, and it just happens to have a lens mount full of conveniently sized ball bearings ;)

It is back together now and clicks at the stops as it did before. Learned my lesson!

Of course after reading this I found the numerous guides on using a plastic bag and warning about the spring.

Wow thanks, I know the hole even I think. That's funny because I've already spent a good bit of time on the floor looking for things that I dropped. Even if I find it, getting that in doesn't look like much fun.

I have wood floors at least, and I've found that a flashlight parallel to the floor lets you find just about anything.

It still works as-is but I would like to get it back to like new if I ever want to sell it. I paid $75 for it last year and now I see them going for nearly $200

Ok I know there are some lens dissectors here, I recall a post replacing the little metal fingers with some household item. This should be easy!

I've taken my F 50mm 1.7 apart to investigate a situation with the focus gears feeling rough

Everything went ok, didn't really solve the problem but at least I have a better idea of what is going on inside now. Theres very few gears to go wrong which I'm pleased about, no missing teeth or anything.

Anyway, I got it back together without any leftover parts. Everything is great except:

When I turn the aperture ring, the aperture functions with no hard stops, it is completely smooth without the half-stop clicks.

I can see on the aperture ring where the indentions are to make it click, but I can't figure out, what interfaces with those to make it snap?

Pardon the poor photo ;)

Oh wow, was away for a while and just saw this.. thanks everyone.

I thought the unlevel horizon would throw it off for sure! But straightening just didn't work.

I was on my way home (work nights), and in my rear view mirror was the city in the morning.. always travel with my K10D, busted it out before the light turned green.

Glad everyone liked it!

Someone over in News & Rumors said that there is one on display at the Fry's Electronics in Duluth.

I went to the Alpharetta Frys a week before that was posted and saw the K-m only, however they are just putting them out.

The FA 31mm f/1.8 limited getting more expensive

Currency conversion comparison doesn't really work though. Your wages are typically higher, as is cost of living, and tax, and in the end it is nearly a direct conversion with no math.

For example a teacher in the UK makes around 40k gbp, while in the US they make around 40-45k usd. There aren't many teachers in the US pulling down 65k usd.

Also you have VAT which runs 15-20% and the US doesn't pay tax on out of state purchases. Pull that off the top and you'll have a more comparable number, but remember your wages are set with the current taxes in mind, so you would have to adjust that as well.

Ultra Wide Angle Primes, DA15mm best choice?

Thanks.

Showing off aside, the size and lightness of the da15 has come in handy for me far more than the extra speed of the da14, since I mostly use it outdoors during walks.

Everyones needs differ of course.

It is my go-to guy for small aperture wide scapes outdoors and doesn't see much use indoors or low light conditions so far. Indoors I tend to be going after people, and da15 is not my preferred people weapon.

Thanks to everyone that liked my fat man (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/622975-post66.html). I wasn't sure if the feel of it would come across as I saw it. 3 people have picked up on how awesome this guy thinks he is, he has such a confident step like nothing can stop him and he will roll right over you.

An Australian friend of mine saw it and said "AMERICA!", that made me laugh.

Really appreciate you guys pointing out that you see it too, so I know I'm not crazy
