Is The Worlds Greatest Camera the 645D and Its CCD Sensor?

Like I said in another thread, for studio work, specially portraits, itís an amazing camera, for everything else, there are better more modern cameras.

I own one, and hardly ever use it now, only in studio. I use my new Sony a7riii for everything else now.

Thanks you both! I didnít know that. I use my iPad with a WiFi SD card. Itís not immediate, but itís doable.

Iím not using my 645D on location anymore, but it would have been nice to know that when I did.

Thanks again.

Thanks.
Is not that it is unusable, but it does lower the quality drastically, youíre better off using an APS-C Camera, without the ISO and flash sync limitations or workarounds. Thatís why I bought a Sony A7Riii, for the price of the body and 3 lenses, all I could have gotten was a used 645Z. And still have some flash sync limitations or workarounds and itís an old camera.

Why do you have a video monitor attached to your rig? How do you get video out of the 645D? doesnít even have live view.

The 645D is great for portraits in studio, but not on dark interior locations or at night, you cannot use iso higher than 400, and even that lowers the quality noticeably.

645D

But for Location portraits, you already have a Sony A 7Rii

This is with the A7Riii

Get an RZ67, thatís the best camera Iíve ever used, shorter than large format. Itís an absolute joy working with it and looking through that huge waist level finder, specially for portraits. I only wish film was cheaper, specially the scanning part.

Question on ISO Image quality

It is usable to ISO 400 professionally. For personal stuff Iíve use all the way up to 1600, but you do lose a lot of image quality and resolution.

Thatís the biggest complaint I had with the D, and thatís why I bought a Sony A7Riii. I could only use the D in the studio or during daylight with natural light. Location or strobe use outside had its challenges, and there a way better alternatives at the same image quality or better.

At least somebody gets it. And itís not just a fanboy.

When you invest in a system is not only that camera, itís the brand and the future. Or youíre gonna have to invest all again in another brand eventually, and sell a depreciating system.

Iíve used the 645D and the Godox AD360ii. But Iíve heard it works on the AD360 as well.

On the old AD360 you need to manually turn on HSS, are you doing that? And maybe you need to use a Cells-II trigger, I remeber I needed that when I had the original AD360, the FT16 canít do HSS.

I canít test it, since my old AD360 was stolen along with the Cells II Canon trigger, I only used a Canon camera back then since I didnít had the 645D. But the only way to get HSS was with the Cells-II trigger, I remember that much.

Get the Cells-II for canon, or better yet, get another Cactus V6ii, and forget about stacking.

PS: this was with the original FT-16, donít know if they release another one. But with the original you couldnít do HSS, in either Nikon or Canon, you needed the Cells-II. It was well known back then.

Thanks! I hope it does works with the Pentax 645D.

And find it odd that it doesnít do HSS with the AD360ii. I might sell it and get anothe AD200.

Do we know when the firmware update will release, for the AD200?

Thanks again.

Will this work with Pentax 645D? And Godox AD200 and AD360ii?

I only need it for HSS without using two triggers in the hotshoe, like with the Cactus V6ii.

Thanks!

is a 645D worth buying today?

If you know itís limitations, and can live with them, then itís worth it at the right price. For a main camera if you do professional work, is very limiting. The image quality is incredible in the studio and daytime outside. As good as the best Full Frame modern cameras. But interiors, late afternoon and night exteriors is not nearly as good, itís below average. You cannot use iso above 400, and even at 400 you lose quite a bit of quality.

I was planning to buy a Z to replace my D as my main camera, but in the end I bought a Sony A7RIII for $2,200 (new) and 3 lenses for $1,000 Sony 28mm F2(new), Zeiss 55mm F1.8(used), and Sony 85mm F1.8(used). And the quality is a bit better than the D in studio and daylight, and lightyears better at high ISO. Plus itís got liveview, excellent video, and the autofocus is increŪble, both in stills and videos. It would have cost me about $4,000 just the Z body(used).

Thatís either the WB, or are you suing a strobe(flash)?

That flash might not be consistent on its color output. They can vary as much as 1000 Kelvin.

I have the same problem with the 645D, I’m forced to use 1/100.

But like they mentioned earlier, it must be the radio trigger. I haven tried a sync cable. I can live with 1/100 in studio.

"Upgrading" decision, Pentax 645Z or Nikon D850(810)

I finally did my first two sessions in my new studio.

The Pentax 645D is an excellent camera in studio, the detail and color are amazing, but I do need new lenses, all I have is the 75mm and 200mm FA lenses, and feel kind of limited by them. I think I’m gonna have to buy the 80-160mm right now FA version. And wait till I have the money for the 150mm 2.8 and 120mm macro. I do have a A 150mm 3.5. But it’s manual focus and I’m having a very hard time focusing with this focusing screen, so I’d rather buy FA lenses.

And I think I made my choice, I’m getting a 645Z, all I need is the higher ISO quality and a bit of more dynamic range for location and outside shots. In the Studio the 645D is amazing.

Thanks to everyone who replied to the thread.

And if they have any input or critique abot the photos, it is, of course, welcomed.

Thanks again everyone. My first studio session got pushed back and back, I only did it yesterday and just Color corrected and retouched the first photo. In the end it was just a regular shoot with some friend actors. Nothing special. And I was kind of rushed... I wanted to try more lighting solutions but in the end it was just regular lighting, softboxes and beauty dish.

I'll post more images later

Hi and thank you all, sorry, Ive been rather busy this week.

My reason for thinking of moving from Pentax is that I run into a lot of problems trying to do certain things, like working thetered, using the camranger, and HSS, although doable with the 645D and Z. It doesn't work as good or as easy as the other brands, it works with some strobes and not others, with some cameras and not others, and in my case it requires to stack two triggers on top of the 645D, already a big camera, so with the XT1 and the Cactus V6ii stacked on top it's annoying and bulky. I could buy another Cactus V6ii for every light I own, but that's expensive and silly.

And finally, Pentax is almost non existent in Mexico, everything is double the price and service is hard to find and slow.

But the thing I care about the most is image quality, which encompasses Dynamic range, Color depth and Resolution with usable high ISO.
That's why I'm asking, I've never even used a D810. If the IQ is similar to the 645Z, will it make sense changing to that system, for overall compatibility? But that's only if I get very similar quality. Sadly there's no rental market here to test the cameras, and I can only do it at the shop, which is not ideal.

Thanks again.
