Apple Aperture K-3 RAW support

Paul, thanks a lot for testing the PEF files for lens EXIF. I was wondering why some JPEGs I shot came up "unknown lens" ... grumble. Guess I'll leave the camera in giant DNG mode for now.

Thanks again.

I walk around with the DA15. If need be, I keep a DA 55 or even FA 77 in the bag.

Looks like 10.6.7 and/or Aperture 3.1.2 fixes this problem.

The Aperture update (and/or 10.6.7) seems to have fixed the .DNG processing/white balance problem.

K7 Is It Right For Me

Hi Ross

I can't really see the "too much" argument for the K-7 -- one of it's best features is that it's well-sorted and easy to use. I suppose there are some more esoteric features, in comparison to an ist DL2, but these just don't get in the way.

The K-7 is a great camera; easy to use, solid in hand. A great camera with which to EXPAND you skill level.

It's not bad, unless it leads you to miss capturing the moment.

With any existing .DNGs: don't reprocess. With the new 3.6, you can process .PEFs, which as far as I know do not have the magenta cast to them.

The problem seems to be with .DNG files, rather than .PEF files.

John -- I found that in "curves", hitting the autocolor button gave me back some of the dynamic range that had been compressed with the RAW reprocessing. However, I can't get it back to a nominally-processed generic .DNG file from before the update.

But that's just for one photo; others seem to be fine to update. At first I thought it was just flash photos, but I can see from your shots that's not the case.

Bleahrg.

Yeah, I saw this too, horrible magenta overcast and compressed dynamic range: but mostly with flash photos.

I updated the RAW software, and I'm leaving the old .DNGs "processed with an older version of Apple's RAW processing".

Going to to check out how new .PEFs look soon.

Pick one: FA 77mm or DA* 50-135mm

The 50-135 is no slouch, mind. It's just that the 77 is so nice as a compact telephoto. I find the 50-135 a touch awkward ergonomically, especially with its lens hood; it almost demands to be mated with the battery grip. The 77 by contrast is stealthy.

Nature Good or Ugly Bokeh

It's funny; it seems to me there's a difference between bokeh and blur. So your first image certainly has bokeh, but what I'd call nervous bokeh. Not quite unpleasant, but jittery.

Your second image has better bokeh to me. However, the third, forth and fifth are more blur than bokeh to my mind. This assessment is quite apart from pleasantness; they're good pictures, but when I seem them, the word bokeh doesn't spring to mind.

For me, the difference between bokeh and blur is that bokeh will retain some figure to it, whereas blur can just be that, a field without figure. A fine line, admittedly.

Interesting discussion.

K5 size comparisons for the large handed

I have big hands as well. For me, this is how it breaks down.

The K10/20 were fine. The K7/5 are really a bit on the small side for real comfort (that pinky curling under the body is annoying); however, the design compensates a bit for the smaller size by having a bigger and better grip.

I often go back and forth between a Canon 5D and the K5. I much prefer the 5D in hand, but for me, the smaller size of the K5 has real advantages in portability and discreteness, especially with Pentax's compact lenses.

The Dark Side Has Taken Me - I Am Going To Be Jumping on A 5D Mk2

I bought a 5D Mk II in August, and recently the K-5 (crazy, I know.)

There certainly are plusses to the Canon. Though it pains me to say it, the 5D fits better in my hand, and the quality of high ISO / low light pictures has a edge (though not a big one) over the K-5.

But: apart from wide angle/tilt-shift (which is why I got FF), I tend to reach for the K-5 more. It's a better travel and everyday camera, and Pentax lenses are generally a much better value than their Canon counterparts. One example: my DA55 comfortably holds its own versus my Canon 85/1.8; I'd say the DA55 is superior as a portrait lens, while being much cheaper than the 85/1.2.

The K-5 is just a more refined, better sorted camera. My Canon's body flexes a bit gripping it, and the shutter clunk is comical. Canon's ergonomics leave a bit to be desired, though I do like the control wheel on the back.

In the end my conclusion is that each camera is in a pretty different position, and I'm not sure one camera "style" could really cover both niches. There's no doubt that Pentax is the better value, and its lenses really are terrific. But I do also like the Canon's "fit," viewfinder and controls. Ideally, Pentax lenses on that Canon body, or some of those T/S lenses on Pentax ... well, can't have it all.

Yeah, that would be great, to auto-export the data. Nearly every time I (manually) update my spreadsheet there's a gotcha-moment that needs figuring out.

Aperture 3 focal length stats?

You can.

In Aperture, make a new "smart album" populated by your whole library. In the smart album "smart settings" (the eyeglass symbol), make whatever default selections you'd like (e.g., Rating, Calendar, Keywords, etc.) Now, in the upper right corner is "Add rule". Choose "EXIF". In the new "EXIF:" line, chose "Lens" and then "is".

Now select an image and look at its metadata. It's best to use the exact lens name, e.g., "smc PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8AL Limited". If not, you could also sort by focal length for your primes, or a range of focal lengths for your zooms, assuming you don't have overlapping focal lengths in your photo library.

Using this same method you can sort your pictures by aperture, shutter speed, ISO, camera body, whatever, really. I've made a lot of these albums and graphed the results; it can be interesting.

Quick "Photographer Information" question

With the K-5, you can elect to store copyright and photographer info with the EXIF of a particular file. Pp. 307-308 of the User Manual shows the procedure.

Question: does anyone know which of the characters is a "space"? Am I supposed to use /underscore/ ?
