Mirror Slap / Shutter Shock on K-1

SR somehow mitigates the issue, although does not recover full sharpness potential. Nikon D800E had the issue, Nikon improved it in the D810 used a different kind of shutter. K1 is probably half way between D800E and D810.

The "fix" according to Ricoh was adding EFCS via firmware upgrade.

Don't forget to adjust AF calibration for your lenses when using the DA 1.4x tc

The main issue, at least with the copy of DA300 I used, was AF consistency. With regards to AF consistency , the DFA150-450 compared to DA300 is like day and night, that makes fine AF adjustment much more effective.

To get a few hot pixels per frame, I need to expose 4 minutes at ISO1600 in total darkness (i.e. K1 with lens cap on in a dark room).

What ISO were you using for the indoor photo?

Maximum sharpness achieved? or lens not capable

Looks like your lens wasn't focused at it's best for the 3rd and 4th frames.
You can zoom in live view mode combined with optical DoF preview to set the lens focus for maximum detail.
If that doesn't improve enough to your expectations, you'd have to consider upgrading your camera to something like Pentax K3 or Pentax KP, the lack of optical anti-alias filter on those camera brings mode details in the images even with old lenses.

You are right about EOL, might be early life defect. Anyway, I'm surprise to see that, my K1 doesn't have this problem at all, images at low ISO are super clean and free of white spot.
Apparently Nikon had the same kind of issues with Sony sensors, they now source the sensor from Tower Jazz for the D850...

---------- Post added 19-11-17 at 09:41 ----------

The white dots issue, there is nothing to do about it, it's the way the Sony sensor is designed and its implementation to max out dynamic range in DXO charts, some of the pixels might go into avalanche triggered by substrate noise or something, which inevitably lead to a pixel saturation. That means all cameras are affected but most of the time there is enough margin so that the effect is not practically visible. Pentax cameras other than Pentax K1 are not affected.

If there isn't any white dots outdoors and presence of white dots indoors with the same exposure, it could be the presence of an external phenomena that you are not aware of.
Or it could be dust on sensor or lens, or for some reasons your sensor already hits its end of life aging curve and pixels start leaking more and more.

Magenta color cast while using AWB

Could be related to the light source especially if it is not a continuous light source. The best is to shoot a manual white balance with WB card, something we know is white or a piece of white cardboard, is not the best but can work, then use that white balance setting for other photographs taken under the same lighting.

---------- Post added 18-11-17 at 18:44 ----------

Haven't seen that much bias with my K1.
Could also be a problem with the camera itself, or camera settings, or firmware version.

- Firmware: What firmware version is installed?
- WB settings: for each WB setting, there is an additional tweak possible, this setting is also done for the WB Auto setting. It could have been modified different from factory settings and not reset.

Well, for the end user, that's the total cost of the system that matters including lenses. Focusing on low cost of only one component of the camera system is the wrong approach because the overall performance of the camera system is limited by the least performing element. So while it makes sense to have apsc bodies cheaper and also with cheaper lenses, it makes not sense to save a few hundred bugs on a camera body and use expensive high quality full frame lenses on it. To me it's interested to see folk focusing only on a camera body or only one lens, while the idea of interchangeable lens camera is to have the flexibility to adapt various lenses to camera bodies.

Finally , the Pentax lineup is one of the most value added partition because, as a user, depending on your budget and size allowance, you can select either apsc, or full frame or medium format each system offering a significant additional quality for the spending. When looking at Canikon, from a 6D to a 5DIII, you have to spend something like 2K to get a tiny benefit.

Style Guide Guidance

I'm really bad in post processing things, I'd need a lecture and a coach.
Beside that, folks have their own little secrets in post processing to win over photography contests, and it's very personal, experience must be developed it can't be copied easily.

What you could do is to have a certain look in mind about a style you are trying to achieve, take a raw photo of your own and play around with settings , note the settings and export the jpeg for that settings, tweak another setting note it and export another jpeg etc. One you have a number of recorder PP settings and corresponding JPEGS, seat back and take a fresh look another day, or one week later, then note the photo you prefer and find out what PP setting was used, use that setting as a reference.

I've noticed that I'm not good at selecting photos immediately after taking them or immediately after processing them, I guess that is because or being soaking into the view for too long and lose the objective sense.
When reviewing photo after a week or even weeks or months, the keepers are more obvious, but perhaps that's just me.

Don"t be upset Kunzite, there is always a way to reduce the cost of a camera, what you get then is more like a Canon camera. The K1 is positioned in best value for the money kind of product, that doesn't mean cheapest. I guess the OP is talking about reaching the price of a apsc camera with a full frame sensor in int, for me that's classifies as low end full frame. Anyway, IMO, the Pentax user base got used to moderate prices since Pentax stayed a long time with apsc bodies and aspc specific lenses. A number of Pentaxians who wanted full frame when pentax did not offer one moved to Canon or Nikon to spend big money, the ones who stayed with Pentax had moderate camera budgets, and now are used to Pentax products being priced like apsc. That is a bit of a problem when apsc folks are asking for full frame priced like apsc. All that mean is that they have the budget for apsc only.

What would YOU consider a "clinical" image?

I've had the DA35 2.4 plastic, it is sharp and cheap, but micro-contrast is not there. The FA35 f2, from what I've seen in images, has decreasing sharpness in corners/edges, but the micro-contrast is completely different. IMO, even if the lens formulation is the same in DA35 2.4 and FA35 2, I don't think the glass materials and coatings are the same. I much prefer the images taken with the FA35 2.

Pixie dust is what's added to the clinical lens to make it non clinical, however it doesn't explain what clinical is.

Clinical is an attribute given to a lens in some situations:
- to avoid buying that lens when its price doesn't align with the number that reads at the cash position of your bank account statement (such as a Zeiss Otus, a Leica etc.)
- to avoid wanting it when not available for K mount (the latest Sigma 500 f4, or the Tamron G2 versions)
- to avoid using that lens for photographing aging yet attractive ladies to avoid being deleted from her list of potential candidates (for that you'd use the kit lens and look for the lowest sharpness setting in the DXO charts)
- to avoid having to drag the sharpness adjustment in your RAW development tool in the wrong direction (that doesn't happen very often...)
- the lens was designed by Pentax medical division to explore the inside of human bodies.

To make K1 cheaper, remove SD2 slot, remove USB connector, remove remote IR sensors (like Canon), replace magnusium alloys chassis by molded carbon fiber compound (like Nikon), replace pentaprism by plastic pentaxmirror, remove night led lighting, remove top dials, remove tilt display, shrink DRAM buffer to a quarter of the size. Basically you get a 6Dx or D610 sort of camera at the price of that sort of camera.

How Many Spare Batteries Do You Have?

One alternate spare battery so that a battery charge can be fully used before the next battery is inserted. That approach would tend to max out the durability of batteries, although not proven with Li-Ion.

In that case they'd fit a split focusing screen in a retro version for manual focus lenses, there is a (small) market for it. Actually, I believe such model would sell much more than K1 silver... Silver finished , IMO isn't a very strong unique selling point. A very good manual focus system would trigger a new of buy, especially by owners if legacy glass and also new manual focus glass such as Samyang and others.

Mirror Slap / Shutter Shock on K-1

No, from what I've seen, done some comparisons of noise ranging from no LV, with increasing LV time, there isn't any visible additional noise due to sensor heating in LV mode, I believe sensor temperature in the K1 to be well controlled.

No. This was reported but apparently not seriously considered by Ricoh. Either they are planning to add this as a selling feature for the next model, or they don't care.

... yes, that can be annoying. From experiments, part of the blur observed with DFA28-105 is due to small camera motion also induced by mirror and shutter (kinetic energy from moving parts has to go somewhere...) because the DFA28-105 is very light weight, SR is not as good as ES to avoid blur, but I found SR to reduce the effect of mirror and shutter induced motion. Now having SR permanently switched on helps, I certain don't get the sharpest images with shutter speeds from 1/30th to 1/200th but with SR On the blur is still well controlled.

I'd prefer that Ricoh increase the price to $4000, fit a 67Mpixels sensor (10 000 x 6700 ), drop AA simulator, drop pixel shift and drop smart dials.
For price sensitive users, they have the choice of getting a KP which is nearly as good as a K1 , from looking at images taken with the KP.
There isn't enough difference in IQ between a KP and K1 to justify the spending on full frame system.

Hassy soaked the Sony sensors in oak barrels for a few years, Pentax used the sensors right after the fermentation process was finished. That explains why Hassy gets the better score.
If you are a red wine amateur, you'll understand what I mean. As a matter of fact, DXO is located in France, the country of red wine. Doesn't it make sense?

Last year I was at a wildlife event, only Canon was there with their long white lenses aligned on gimbals and all camera models show cased and for the users to try. Only Canon is there! Other brands don't even have a chance to be seen. You try the Canon camera, the Canon technical is here to answer your questions, at the end he eventually give you a voucher for a discount at a Canon dealer. It's not about gear at all. It's about how to building relationships with customers. Who care is the Canon sensor in make with a 15 years old fab line and deliver 8bits of dynamic range at ISO100. For the customer who is not into splitting hairs on technical details, the choice is easy, go Canon.
