Vanguard Ball Head?

Advice about Gitzo and RRS is fine, but clearly not what you're looking for...

I have a (stronger) ballhead from Vanguard dating from around the same era yours is, and love it, it's well made and reliable.

However, in 2019 my recommendation for a ballhead is to look at Sirui. their products have an excellent balance of price vs performances. Within your budget, the K10x will be stronger and more reliable than the one you linked to.

If a label printer doesn't work (I'd print directly on it with a small font), just some white stickers meant to write on them, cut them to size and write.

I confess I'm surprised that a sharpie gets smudged.

Camera models today: lots still on the market

Nope, that interpretation is not valid.

You're assuming taht FF, as a market, has to be as profitable in absolute terms as APS-C. That's not the case.

Per unit sold, I'm pretty sure FF is more profitable, but that's opinion. Still, there's demand for FF, so even if its total market revenue is not as high as APS-C, it's a market demanding products and manufacturers will cater to it.

Bag suggestions for Pentax ME

For your requirements, just about any bag will do, even a holster (except if you want to carry both lenses).

It depends on your budget and what else you might want to be able to carry.

I really like the Think Tank Retrospective line, they're inexpensive and with a nice quality. Lowepro has a lot of products also, too many to keep up. You could also find a cheap, no-name sling bag with the ubiquitous shape copied by everyone.

If you want to splurge a bit more, I'd have a look at some other products. The MindShift Gear Photocross line is fantastic, durable, water resistant, sturdy. The version 10 would be small enough while offering some nice possibilities. It's a sling. The Peak Design Slings (the 5 would work for you, or the 10 if you want to carry extras) are also fantastic. A bit less comfortable than the Photocross over long periods of time (if the bag is loaded) but nicer to access the internals, and offers the possibility to attach a Capture Clip (invaluable addition to my kit, it has changed how I operate when taking pictures). Then there's the Peak Design Everyday Messenger. The version 13 would be a bit larger than your needs, again it lets you carry extras.

Mindshift also offers a messenger bag, as do a good many other brands.

How do you decide what lens to use . . . . ???

Very niteresting questions! Even the biases in the questions themselves show that you and I don't work the same way.

convenience, desired effect, reach.

The 28-105 always comes with me. The 43, almost always. Then I decide if I'm going to need the reach of the 60-250 and, if so, it comes. Last I decide if, I'm going to do portraits, whether the WR protection of the DFA 100 macro makes it a better choice than the 77. If macro or WR are not needed, the 77 comes. Last, if I expect to need wide angle shots, the FA 20-35 steps in the bag (that latter lens is perfectly fine, but less reliable than the others, I've found).

Usually more than daily.

A few months. I'm currently selling a Sigma 135-400, I thought I'd enjoy the 400mm reach, but realized shortly after acquiring it that I wasn't using it at all, so I'm selling it. As for the rest, these lenses will stay in my stable, they all serve a purpose. Only the FA20-35 COULD leave one day, if I found a replacement that I liked more.

Agreed. The K-3 was also a significant camera, as was the K1000 back in the day. Surprising editorial choices.

I see what you mean, but it's not the same thing as a mode dial. Given Pentax's focus on customization and external controls on higher-end bodies, having the 4 way controller give access to settings (and I agree that color space isn't needed as a shortcut) is nice, and having a different dial for AF point means no risk of changing a setting because you didn't notice the absence of the AF point icon.

I'd love an updated FA limited with DC and WR. F1.4 is not needed I think, I'd keep the character of the lenses, but upgrade their technology.

Makes sense, except if you can frame in the center with reliability. Not easy, I agree.

Some interesting ideas. We're all aware that AF is slower with Pentax, but not in a visible way with newer lenses, oftentimes, and the AF accuracy is among the best.

That's something I would love.

I agree that color mode should go in a menu, it's not something that's changed often. Even though not everyone shoots RAW.Filter modes are in the menus, where they don't bother anyone.

As for outdoors view setting, it's something that I use almost every day. Having a boost in brightness without compromising color accuracy is extremely valuable for me when outdoors. And when shooting astro/night scenes and wanting to see the colors (hence no red light mode) I often dial the brightness down.

Seeing as you claim to use only RAW, why do you care? You'll post-process the images anyway, and having more pixels available to control your final crop is useful.

For the engineers out there-- aperture block , or battery failure?

Hello folks!

Helping my brother-in-law here. Last December he realized that his camera , a K-30, was acting up. He asked me to look into it. It seemed like the aperture block problem, the aperture wouldn't open correctly, it was particularly easy to see using an F1.4 lens and trying to stop it down.

He decided to pay for repairs, using services provided by PentaxCameraRepairs which had been recommended by several people. As we are in Canada, shipping back and forth was complicated but relatives traveling to the US helped us.

The camera worked fine for a good while, now it started acting up again, but the symptoms are weird. At first it appears to be the same type of problem, but here's what I observe.

1-Generally dark frames
2-Burst mode or repetitive step-down doesn't do anything
3-Using a small aperture (F9, F11, etc) underexposes but does create a usable image, while using fast apertures (F5.6 or wider) yields black images (this is the weird part)
4-Using manual mode, or bulb, lets me take pictures, but images are underexposed vs what they ought to be
5-Once, after using bulb mode, the camera operated fine for a short while
6-In P mode, the exposure meter seems to think things are brighter than they are actually

I've tested several lenses of course. The battery is somewhat old but I have no backup to test for the moment.

Does anyone have an opinion regarding this? It doesn't seem to be exactly the aperture block problem.

My two favourite slings are the Mindshift Gear Photocross (10 or 13) which is ideal except it has no place to attach a Capture Clip, and the Peak Design Sling 10L, which is a tad less roomy than the Photocross and does not distribute weight quite as well, but has a fantastic design apart from that.

Small messenger bags could also work for your needs. Again, I'm partial to the Peak Design messenger.

SMC Pentax-DA* 60-250mm F4 ED [IF] SDM vs. Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD Macro

The extra 10mm at the wide end is even more useful, IMHO.

At comparable prices, I'd never hesitate to get the 60-250. the Tamron is only adequate at F2.8, white the 60-250 already excels at F4, so your useful aperture range is somewhat similar. The Pentax is smaller, lighter, has silent AF, quick-shift (the Tamron uses an annoying AF/MF mechanism), the tripod foot is nicer to remove when needed, it has WR, a longer range, etc. It's one of my main outdoors lens.

The Tamron does have F2.8 even if I wouldn't use it except if forced. It also has internal zooming. That's about it.
