Holy moly, I've just realized a failure. I put in my card to import the RAW images to Lightroom and was a little confused at first because the file numbering started over (9999+). I imported the new 000X files, but forgot to look at the tail end of the 999X files, so I lost the shots I took on the 3rd. :o

Luckily, the subject matter for that day is a large and immobile county feature, so I've decided to allow myself to go back and re-shoot it.

Technically, for Single In Challenge purposes, it's a miss, but spiritually I'm going to be at peace with it.

Please learn from my mistakes.

I'm super late to the posting party, but I have pictures. (I settled on the Rokinon 14/2.8.)

Here I come!

I also still have a few days to catch up on, but I'm ready to review and see what next month gets me. :-)

For May I used the Tamron 28-105/4-5.6, which is a replica of a lens I had under the Promaster badge, and apparently is a clone of the Pentax FA of the same suit, because that's what Lightroom recognizes it as (and what shows up on the exif data in Flickr).

The good:
  • Zoom range

  • Fast focusing

  • Lightweight

  • Ability to use aperture ring

  • Sharp enough

The bad:
  • Large/bulky

  • Slow

  • Vignetting

  • Dreadfully short focus throw (if wanting to use manual focus)

The lens also probably would benefit from a hood to prevent haze and boost contrast, although flare wasn't too intrusive. Minimum focusing distance was very workable, although I almost always want every lens to be able to get closer - that's my own obsession. :-)

It's a cheap, lightweight lens that's perfect for, say, walking around at an event. It's extremely versatile for outdoor scenes, but a little slow for indoors. The bokeh's/isolation abilities aren't great, so it's not a super artistic lens, but sometimes its good to just try to "see" interesting things with a lens like this. That's something I'm still trying to work on getting back into the Single In Challenge.

Here's the link: Single in May 2019 | Flickr Hopefully I'll get the rest uploaded today!

I'm looking forward to next month!

I'm on a roll! I'll join June for sure, and I even went ahead and put in the theme days as reminders in my phone's calendar. As prepared as that sounds, I'm not at all sure what lens to use....

I'd like to get to know the Rokinon 14/2.8 a little better.

But I also have some old, off-brand, constant aperture zooms that I used to have a lot of fun with (I remember being in love with this one: Kalimar 28-85/3.5 | Flickr), and one that's never been Singled on APS-C or full frame! Kalimar 35-135/3.5 | Flickr

I've still got a few days to decide, so I'll keep an eye on what everyone else is doing. :-)

Honestly it was just luck. I took several photos with this general pose and the lens seemed to like the glasses better than my face anyway, I think just because they were a closer object, and kind of blocking my features to discourage any facial recognition...

I'm a stickler for the rules, but it sounds like you're going to be truly posting one photo from each day, except instead of reviving the month's "old" daily threads, you'll just post a two-week old photo in the "current" daily thread. As in, you'll post the 17th/1st, then the 18th/2nd, and the 19th/3rd? If you're just posting 2 photos both taken on the 17th, I think that's not in the spirit of Singling. :-)

As you've all seen, I don't mind reviving old threads - for me it's the most efficient way to catch up on commenting. I kind of like coming in last, that way I'm sure to see what everyone else has shared!

I'm caught up now, speaking of!

I know precisely what you mean. I have the Google Pixel 3XL and it's no slouch, which makes it easy to get a picture-a-day. I've tried to relax the rules on myself. Life should be fun. :-)

Bein' as I also shot an old manual 135mm, I feel like I could just copy and paste most of what Raf said. ;-)

The SMC Pentax-M 135/3.5 is fine. I don't mind the field of view too much (maybe a full frame privilege), but the minimum focusing distance is just too far to have much fun, and to be honest, I think I need a new prescription for my vision... Haha!

The telephoto effect for isolation was fun and the lens was as sharp as it needed to be, but I think the sheer age of the glass/coatings just makes images a little hazy and desaturated. I dressed them in post, but there just wasn't a WOW fact for any of the shots that I made, so it was tough to be really excited about the lens, even though it's a reliable performer with no surprises. Great paired with a bounced flash, and using macro tubes was a nice treat to escape the MFD. I regret not doing more stitches or landscapes. I must trek to downtown KC for May. :-)

I'm gonna go with something versatile, easy and cheap - my spirit lens. ;-) Tamron 28-105/4-5.6

The very first lens I ever bought for my very first film SLR (ZX-L, collecting dust...) was a Promaster version of this. I sold it and regretted it (something I did a number of times before vowing not to ever sell anything again). I wanted to repurchase it and settled for this Tamron version, which delightfully identifies itself as the Pentax-FA version in Lightroom. La-dee-dah.

Count me in as a Full Frame fan girl! Everything is better on the K-1 versus my old K-30 and K-S2... Almost. I do occasionally find myself missing the fully articulated screen of the K-S2.

If you can get one, you should get one. I find myself getting paranoid every once in a while, thinking maybe I should buy another one as back up in case there's some weird camera apocalypse... :o

I've got my shots, just need to take some time to process and upload them. I think I'm gonna make it this month! :-)

Although as I'm sitting here checking in, I just remembered last night I had a terrible dream that my shutter wasn't "timed" right and the exposures were all weird and I was going to have to send my camera in to get it repaired. I was getting all anxious about the expense and about using the K-S2 again, that I probably needed to charge the batteries... But don't worry, I tested the K-1 just now and it's all good. :-D

@Tsuken Don't you dare neither of you bail on me!

In a related story, I have some shots for today, but I'm sick as a dog and I need some couch time, so I'll edit/post/comment tomorrow.

Maybe mundane subjects call for reimagined processing?

I have given myself permission to make mundane shots because I think of my photography hobby as more of a diary than an art. I started photography after I realized journaling was a little too isolating. A photograph is unique to the moment it was created and as expressive as your artistic mind crafts it to be. But it's also easy to share, and other people can relate their own feelings to it, too. I've never seen a therapist, but I feel like photography is there for me in a similar capacity. :-)

Facebook Memories just reminded me that 5 years ago today I finished my first Single In Challenge with the M135/3.5. I think I'd like to do a special anniversary episode for SIC April 2019, after so many years of experience shooting and processing, and the upgrade to Full Frame. :-)

As crummy as some of the pictures are technically, that first SIC was an awesome experience. I don't think I'll be able to top it!

Yay! Since I actually completed a SIC? ... May 2018. :o But I think I technically filled out December 2018 with shots, I just never got around to editing/posting them. They're still sitting in my LR library. I have still been trying to take daily photos because I love making "yearbooks" on Shutterfly, but it's been a lot with my phone lately. Lazy, I know...

This. There aren't any bonus points given for not using a feature in your camera. :D Use your gear to make a nice picture. Don't let anyone make you feel ashamed for pressing (or not pressing) one of the buttons.

@iheiramo has the right idea about it, I think.

I'm gonna give it a shot! Hopefully more than one shot. :-)

Not fully committed to a lens yet. K-1 is wearing the Sigma Mini-Wide II (28/2.8) in anticipation, but I'm still very attracted to the Rokinon 14/2.8... I'll decide at the last minute...

I've caught up for posting and commenting through yesterday. The pleasant nature of 55/1.4 makes it easy to get a shot, especially since I'm allowing myself to embrace Bokehcember. ;-)

Work just kills me dead during the week. I'm "just a secretary", but I swear I ought to be out of breath and sweating by the end of every day. With 6 attorneys and 2 paralegals, my desk is intense! When I get home it's almost all I can do to sit and stare at the wall. :-) Maybe it will calm down a little with the holidays pending...

Anyway, I'm happy to be here! ^_^

I'm doing it! I have a bit of renewed vigor after finally putting together my 2017 photo book, and I'm relatively on top of shooting for my 2018 Project 365. It's the home stretch!

I'm making it a Bokeh-cember with the Auto Sears (M42) 55/1.4, which, bizarrely, I've never singled.

Here I am, trying to relax in my own home, and little do I know folks are traipsing around the internet dragging my good name through the dirty world of belf portraits!

Well, if I'm going to be referenced I want it known that the bare buns are essential for a quality belfie, and if you're not going to put the effort forth (or... rear...?) then you may as well just keep it conventional.

Bare belfs or die!

(Honestly, I've only taken one belfie, butt it was great.)

Someday I'll come back to you, Single Inners... I still manage to make daily shots, but I'm about two months behind on processing photos. :o
