My 06 lens just died.

Yep, mine died too some months ago (bought second hand so no idea what it had been through before). First it refused to focus at times but switching camera on and off seemed to help. But finally it just made chirping sounds and wont focus. Pity, because i loved the lens but feel very hesitant about buying another one.

Hear hear! I too would love that, my single biggest concern with the Q is the limited DR.

This fills me with a great sense of wonder... It's amazing what "ordinary" equipment (in the right hands) can let us see. Thank you.

Actually the blown out background is just so right in this instance! Works great as a backdrop against the perfectly exposed bird.

Misc Falun Mine

From a very old mine (today a museum) in Falun, Sweden. I've deliberately left much negative space to give some sense of the surrounding space and darkness (wish I'd had an even wider lens). I also know it's a bit tilted but I'm not sure if I mind? Also decided not to crop it though I realise there are plenty of options for doing so. Any comments and critique welcome!

I'd absolutely keep it and use it a lot! I have some older manual lenses that I love and would love to try on full frame (as they were once meant to be used). And I would also keep and continue to use my trusted K-5 until it falls apart (not least for birding!). And also my K-x, Q and Q-S1!

Thanks again Schraubstock for your thoughts and for the time you take responding at length to this. I will try re-editing to a brighter version later when i manage to find the hard disk with the raw file (recently moved to a new town).

Thanks everyone for thoughts and comments.

Schraubstock, i agree exposure is difficult on this one, though i wouldn't call it underexposed. Actually it was shot on a heavily overcast and foggy late afternoon, so I think exposure is rather correct related to the actual conditions. Then again, that of course means absolutely nothing to someone who wasn't present when the shot was taken! So your comments on exposure are welcome, although I think you've overdone it in the other direction, to my mind your version is way too bright. Apart from wanting a "realistic" look, I deliberately kept exposure on the low side as I wanted that effect. Although I may have gone too far in that direction. I agree that the proof is in printing but I haven't printed this one so far, I guess it would take a few test prints to get it right. (Also, thanks for pointing out the dust.)

I also tried it in b&w but preferred the muted colour version. (Although setting the white balance gave me hell, I also tried some cooler versions but ended up with this.) But I think b&w would lend itself to experiments with contrast, for example using a graduated filter to increase the contrast in the foreground and "fade" more into the fog.

Regarding cropping I can understand the suggestions to crop a bit at the top, but I decided on a very high and narrow crop to catch much of the light gradient going from river to sky. Although, again in regards to printing, I think my crop would look too narrow in print?

Anyway, I think the big benefit from c&c is the reasoning itself and opportunities to learn, not the end result in a re-edited picture! So thanks to all for keeping the discussion going.

PS I always shoot RAW, so no problems re-editing :) I don't have access to the original file at the moment but may post another try later.

Very shallow lake edge, on this occasion also lower water levels than normal. Any thoughts welcome. I usually prefer low contrast when editing (partly in reaction to what seems to be a general contemporary preference for extreme contrast and saturated colours), but it's sometimes tricky to get it right, risking a dull or lifeless image instead.

Shot in thick winter fog some years ago. Any c&c welcome, I remember having a hard time editing (crop, exposure, wb: was difficult getting it right, I was trying to reproduce it as I remembered the scene, always difficult I think...).

Amazing shot! Has a rather unique look to it, quite distinct from more "regular" wildlife photos. The OOF twigs in the foreground give a great sense of depth, feels like they bring you closer to the motive. Great work, thanks for sharing!

Seems to be working very well indeed! Lovely shot, great colours and tonality. Can I ask if you did much post processing, exposure, shadows etc?
