During an injury break in a rugby game yesterday near Paraparaumu airport, kept thinking of Zk on this forum for some reason!!
Nothing special, just a few that were coming into land.

Welcome to the ex-Pentax/now-Nikon club! What camera have you got? One of the nice side-effects is the choice of lenses etc. that you can get 2nd hand on TM or wherever. Not to mention the far superior photos of course!

Thanks. I've been practising! If it's something you enjoy do it, but let them know the cost of the gear and ask for free beer!

Westpac Stadium and, I think, NZRU allow cameras of all types, but you can't use the photos for commercial purposes, that's about the only restriction from memory. Both the venue AND the sports body have rules to check on.

I played hockey all my sporting life, but don't enjoy watching it now that much, prefer rugby, and the Wgtn hockey turfs are at the other end of the city from me.

Every winter. I do rugby mainly, but also try to do soccer, and done a little hockey.
Soccer is more difficult than rugby as the contact with the ball is way more fleeting and the ball goes faster than someone running with it.
I set my camera to 7fps for rugby, but 10fps for soccer. Fast Af is a bonus so you can get the person kicking it, then the person receiving. Yeah girls soccer is quite a bit slower with way less headers.

As you will be putting wear and tear on your gear make sure you're compensated somehow. I sell my pics to the players (tho' bugger-all), but let the club I follow have them for nothing, as a way of supporting them, they also give me a few free beers in the clubroom. They don't use that many anyway.

I always have a user mode I can quickly set to "dummy" mode, for when I give the camera to someone else to take a photo.

Perhaps this should be altered to exclude threads based on specific subjects (say, "birding") or geographic areas. Obviously it makes sense for the Kiwis to discuss it being relatively geographically isolated from everyone else, and I can see why birders may request a specific lens for birding in that thread. I can also see why you wouldn't want this talk cluttering up other general threads though. Maybe, Mark, you could suggest something to the other Mods and owner?

And of course you know I'm coming from an objective viewpoint as I don't have anything Pentax to buy or sell!

I've never photo'd cycling.

For side on I'd try panning at least a little to show wheel spinning, so I'd start somewhere around 1/100th and see what develops (pun intended). If that works try slower. Naturally you'll end up with a smaller aperture, but that doesn't matter as the background would be blurred by the panning hopefully. The more you practice the better at it you'll get.

For front on I would try and isolate a cyclist using f2.8, shutter maybe not below 1/1000? Again, trial and error. If you want a group to be in focus naturally a smaller aperture which you may have to make up for by a higher ISO or slower shutter.

For all these I'd be TAv mode.

You'll just have to experiment to see what results you like.

They let me stay, and I've Nikon and Canon cameras! As long as you don't call hockey "field hockey", and do call ice hockey "ice hockey", you'll be right. :D

You're doing it wrong!! :p
I can do 2 or 3 games a day and not have that problem. I can see maybe an eyecup would help though. I do leave my Thinktank rain cover eyecups on permanently, they stick out a bit more but aren't really padded much.
Do you shoot with both eyes open? If not, try it. It's better for your eyes and you see what's going on a bit with your eye that's not looking through the vf.

I'm now also a Canon user (as well as Pentax and Nikon), bought a G7X MkII. It's jacket-pocketable so is for the times I don't want a big camera.
It's arrived here in the office but I don;t have an SD card here

I think it's the first camera I've owned without a viewfinder, we'll see how that goes.

I think I remember that ford! We were in a Holden Commodore wagon, but saw it, but wasn't too sure if we should attempt it. Took it on an angle and all was good.

We did that recently too, a great trip, but you're sick of gravel road by the end of it! Some epic landscapes in there.
