If somebody told me back in 2017 that I won't hear anything about this product until February 2020 when suddenly it would be on Adorama and B&H order pages, I'd have worried about that person.

中藤毅彦 is a street/cityscape photographer and long time GR user.
瀬尾拓慶 and 山写 are both nature and landscape photographers, one specialized in Japanese forest and the other in mountaineering.

Unlikely that these are used for making big announcements for new camera and lenses.

Point and Shoot Competition #143 - Centennial (with mini giveaway!)

This month's theme is Centennial. As far as PENTAX is still technically 100 years old (Aashi Kogaku Goshi Kaisha was founded in Nov. 1919) there's no reason not to celebrate to have some fun. :) In the spirit of this, there's a prize of "PENTAX 100 years of history" sticker pictured in the attached for the winner.

You don't have to take the theme literally or too seriously, it's good enough to convince me that your picture is somehow related to 1, 0 and 0. Let's get creative, take new pictures or find old ones, I hope you can post something here!

Contest Rules:
  • Always have fun!

  • Cameras:
    • ALL CAMERA BRANDS ARE ALLOWED.

    • The camera including the lens should fit in a pocket on your coat, jacket or pants etc. (some exceptions below).

    • As far as the size requirement is met, all digital cameras with sensors smaller than or equal to 1" are allowed. However, for interchangeable lens cameras, no "adopted" lenses are allowed.

    • As far as the size requirement is met, all non-interchangeable lens cameras regardless of the sensor size and medium (digital or film) are allowed.

    • Interchangeable lens cameras with sensors larger than 1" are not allowed regardless of the size.

    • Mobile phones, tablets and any 110 film cameras are allowed regardless of the size.

  • Entries will close on February 29th, 2020 midnight PST.

  • Maximum image dimensions are 1024x768 (ish) pixels.

  • List camera brand and model with entry for all to see, and exposure data would be nice.

  • No restrictions on when the entries were taken.

  • Contest winner determines the rules, selects theme, sets closing date and judges the next competition.

  • Enter up to three images, however you may change your entries as many times as you like up to the contest closing date/time.

Attached was shot with PENTAX Q7 and Q 08 Wide Zoom on a tripod, it's a night shot of display of my Q7 prints in my house. The winner will get a PENTAX 100 years of history stickers pictured here unless he/she declines. Postage is paid by kwb. I got the stickers and a T-shirt in one of PENTAX gallery contest but I'm not a sticker guy.

Have fun and enjoy!

Thank you very much barondla, for selecting my entries, and of course for an interesting theme!

Thanks Bart and Titia! Mature tumblewees are easily rooted up by winds out of sandy soil of the desert and roll to spread, but when wind blows hard they travel for a very long distance and pile up at man-made structures like this quickly, causing a real problem.

Anyway, I'll spend a day or so and will post the next theme. See you all in the next one!

Porcupine, the same animal as I've posted before. This time it was not even trying to go covert as it was on a tree without leaves, just nibbling the bark. Pentax Q7 and Q 06 lens, F/2.8, ISO 400, 1/6 sec on a tripod.

Yes, in Japan it only comes with small grip. This was always the case, not sure why.

On amazon.co.jp M and L grip cost about 3000 and 3900 JPY respectively, that's probably like 27 and 35 USD.

If you have a Q series body, just mount the lens on, turn on the camera and then unmount while the camera power is on and both the leaf shutter and the aperture stay open.
This is true for all Q lenses with variable aperture, i.e. Q 01, 02, 06 and 08.

Awesome experiment, btw!!!

The only down side to me, if any, is that the lens cap is not as secure as 01, 02 and 06. More than once the cap came off in the bag.

This wasn't the worst tumbleweed day I've experienced, but it's getting bad enough some have been working with pitchforks.

Hi Kris, you are doing quite well for single in January with 06 zoom! I really like the dramatic clouds and the perspective of #3, the lone tree looks as if it's fending off that big dark mass of clouds.

Thank you Deesquared, yes it was!

Living in a small town in US, we always tend to make do with Japanese cuisine heresy here and there ("hey let's substitute pork for dried herring"), but we're happy as far as the end result is delicious.

I went for a walk with my wife to enjoy what I felt like the first sunny weekend since forever. KP and 55-300 PLM at 300mm, F/6.3, ISO 800, AF-S, center focus point.
I was shooting the bird while it was on a tree branch, but it took off, I managed to follow, refocus and trigger. This was roughly 1FPS  and I took 3 shots shown in chronological order. I wasn't expecting much but was surprised to find that I liked the first one.

What's the largest capacity SD card you've used in a Q?

I use 8, 16 or 32GB card in Q7, they all work fine.

Lucky you, photoptimist!

In my case, the first digital camera I owned (Olympus Camedia something) suddenly decided to go crazy. The very first day's worth of pictures of my second child, then-newborn, were all lost! Memory card technology was still in its infancy, SD card didn't exist (OK it might have existed when this happened, but not when I bought the camera), and my camera used SmartMedia. If you don't remember, they looked like thinner but longer SD cards, the memory card adapter had the exact shape of a 3.5" floppy disk, you would insert the card into the adapter and then stick the adapter into the 3.5" floppy drive to read the data out from PC! :) Later I have found that SmartMedia is notorious for corrupting its own file system.
SmartMedia - Wikipedia

Because of this, I and my wife became digital photolossophobic for quite some time and went back to film P&S for a year or two for kids' pictures, though we continued to use that camera for things of non-critical importance.

Fast forward 7 or 8 years, my daughter asked for her babyhood pictures for a school project. "Um, important pictures like that are only PRINTED on PAPER (what a concept), and most of those prints are at your grandparents' house in Japan, but let's see what we have on my PC." "Hey dad, you have more pictures of big sis than mine!" "Um, yes, that's because the digital camera used to work before you were born, but it happened to fail right after that, since then we mostly used film camera for some time", and as I spoke I was feeling as if I'm making some really lame excuse.

Fortunately there was at least one good picture that she thought was OK , but needless to say that I made sure to visit my parent's house on summer (or was that winter?) vacation to dig out old photo albums.

Hi Steve, there's some truth about Auto 110 lineage.

Pentax itself revealed that the original idea of Q dates back to their proof-of-the-concept experiment "auto 110 digital" at around 2000. It was a CCD sensor in an Auto110 body connected to an external board by a bunch of test leads, it actually was able to capture photos.
The concept was no-go at the time, they (developers who wanted to make it) regularly made new proposals, each time the manager rejected it, until finally the market trend changed somewhat in 2009.
