25mm vs 28-45mm comparison on 645Z

I own both the D FA 25mm and 28-45mm. The 28-45mm is a bit sharper at all apertures (by far the sharpest lens I've ever used), though the 25mm is quite sharp from f/10-f/14 (I don't often shoot with it at wider apertures). It starts to fall off just a touch at f/16 and more by f/22. The 25mm is a great lens to have...that 3mm makes a big difference in the wide angle. I'd love it if Pentax came out with something even a bit wider.

645Z Questions?

I can only speak to question #1...it's MUCH faster than the 645D, at least twice as fast, maybe three times. But still slower than other cameras with smaller files.

Pentax 645z vs Canon 5DSR 50.6 Mpx

I know quite a few landscape shooters that dropped Canon when the Nikon D800 came out, it seems Canon is about three years late to the high megapixel full frame party. Maybe they will get some shooters back now...at least they could use their Nikon glass on the Canon body (with an adapter like many have done with the 14-24mm), albeit with manual focus only so it would mostly be useful for landscape shooters.

I shot with the 5D II for over two years and had the 16-35mm f/2.8L II and the 24-105mm f/4L. From my experience the Canon wide angle glass stinks compared to the MF Pentax lenses. I don't have any experience with the Nikon FF glass. With my Canon images were never sharp in the corners, even stopped down. I think you'd have to use Zeiss glass or at least the Nikon 14-24mm to get lenses that actually resolve enough for that sensor's tiny pixels. Or maybe I just had two bad copies of those lenses. I think for landscape shooters the wide angle glass is very important, at least for me it's a deal breaker. Also, the Canons are very noisy in the shadows. I was blown away by what you could pull from shadows with the 645D once I started using that system.

One of the issues mentioned by some professional landscape shooters was the uselessness of the Nikon live view in the D800, and they chose the 5D III over the higher megapixel D800 for that reason. I have a feeling they weren't planning to make many large prints like I do. Not sure if they fixed the live view in the 810, but perhaps that could still be an advantage for Canon.

After shooting for nearly 3 years with the 645D I am pretty used to not needing live view and now feel it's a luxury with the 645Z. I do use it often now, but don't need to since I know my lenses well.

How do I update Adobe Camera Raw and PS CS6 to include the Pentax 645 28-45mm lens profile? I ran an Adobe update not long ago, but it doesn't seem to have automatically updated that profile. Thanks!

D-FA 25mm f/4 discontinued

I find in 25mm D FA to be pretty sharp, but it pales in comparison to the 28-45 (though I haven't tried it yet on my 645Z, just the D). It's sharper than my 35mm. I thought about selling it, but think I'll hang onto it a while longer, as it's still useful in tight situations and doesn't look like it should decrease in value any since it's now discontinued.

Colour: 645D vs 645Z?

I have both the 645D and the Z, which I purchased about a month ago. I haven't noticed any huge differences in color, but haven't done any scientific comparison either. I think the ISO, frame rate, live view, etc. make the Z a far superior camera, though if you aren't concerned with those features the D is a steal.

DA25mm 645 lens Internal Filter options?

I believe I have the same filter that Adam posted. Works fine. Takes a little time to change as you need to be more careful so as to not drop the filter holder or let anything get into the lens. Usually I just lay a lens cloth over the lens opening while I swap filters.

I agree with comments above...I'd rather they left out the SR in favor of a smaller and lighter lens. But, I'm sure an event or wedding photographer would disagree with me!

It's very sharp up to f/16, but has fallen off a bit by f/22, which is to be expected. Still sharper than my 35 or 25, though.

Could you use a screw in 82mm filter until you can get a genuine Pentax replacement? I have a cheap one I used to use for my 35mm A...it still allowed me to put screw in filters into the hood as well. Was under $10 too.

I've had my 28-45 for just over a week and have been out shooting with it quite a bit already. Yes, it's heavier, but I think it's a much faster and more flexible option than carrying both the 25mm and 35mm and having to constrantly swap lenses. I upgraded my ballhead from the RRS BH-40 to BH-55 and it balances much better now. It's a monster, but it fits in my bag and doesn't had much more weight than having the other two lenses. It's also sharper than the other two lenses.

For situations where getting enough DOF with full sharpness through the frame and where the scene isn't overly complicated and the light isn't changing to quickly I typically focus bracket at about f/13, sometimes f/16 if it has objects really close to the lens and I also want infinity focus. Use live view on the 645Z or on the 645D I would make a guess and then review the files for sharpness...find your two focus points (infinity should be near the middle of the infinity sign). Make sure you remember those points, then go ahead and focus bracket.

In Camera RAW I make my global adjustments, open both files in Photoshop, then create layers from the background. Drop one file on top of the other, then select both layers and go to Edit--> Auto Align Layers. You can then have PS "Auto Blend Layers" ...choose the option for focus bracketing. Or if it's a scene where you have moving objects, like waves, that may throw off the auto blend you can manually blend the layers using the erase tool.

It takes a while to learn the technique, but if you're an obsessive pixel peeper and plan to make large prints like I do, then it's the way to go!

I just got my 28-45 last week and have done some shooting with it. I find it sharper than both my 35mm A and 25mm D FA and am very happy with it since it drastically reduces my lens swapping in the field. The only thing is that star bursts aren't rendered as beautifully as with the 35mm A, but I can live with that. I may end up selling the other two lenses, since I see myself using them much less now.

Pentax 25mm and 28-45mm price fluctuations

I'm looking into selling my D FA 25mm and when I researched the new cost on one about a week ago at B&H it had dropped to $3700USD or so, now it's back up to $4750 on B&H. I'm not complaining, since I only paid $4K for it used over 2 years ago, but what's the deal?

The 28-45mm also looks like it jumped a couple hundred bucks, back up to $4997 from $4697.

Also, my 645Z and 28-45mm arrived today! It's supposed to be about -20F tomorrow morning in Duluth, MN, so I might give it a cold weather test drive!

Help finding 645D Eyepiece Part

Anyone know where to find the metal ring (washer shaped) screw in part that holds the rubber eyepiece in place on the 645D (and I assume 645Z) ???

Mike's Camera doesn't have it. I left a message this morning at the Ricoh parts dept., but haven't heard back just yet. When I called them about two years ago they said it was unavailable. I lost mine pretty early on (it unscrews a little to easily if you ask me) and have been using the camera for the past 2+ years without it, but an looking to sell my 645D now because I just bought a 645Z.
