How much are willing to shell out for Knew?

I am just curious, as I am not an engineer. I am wondering if brighter viewfinder can help AF work better? I am thinking no. In the end, improvement in user experience is great, but it needs to translate to better images at the end. Sensor performance of Pentax APS-C cameras are pretty good already, and what hampers it often is the AF in my view. So - one of the biggest selling point for a new Pentax camera of any kind with incremental changes is the AF. I may buy it just for that reason alone. With faster and more accurate AF I can certainly be more efficient.

Adjusted for inflation, the MSRP for most things will increase. But the comfort level of consumers for a given product with certain set features is a moving target in either direction, at best. Not to mention that it varies from one age group to another, one income level to another. As evident in the thread, with all that considered, a rough consensus is emerging although how representative of the overall sentiment by all Pentaxians Is obviously not clear. Then, what about for non Pentax users who may buy into the system because of this camera? Fuji somehow was able to get many people to switch into their system. I’m just fascinated with where this is going. Seemingly betting on a brighter VF and the experience that brings - Again I’m fascinated as well as a bit frightened to think about its reward and consequences for the company too. In the end I really want this camera to be successful and I find it absolutely imperative that they get the pricing of this camera right. Looking at where the camera market trend has been, I can help but think that the whole industry including Pentax is approaching the critical junction. My hope is that they sell this at as low of a price that they can stomach to do, so that more of us just may buy it for the hell of it, or love of the brand, and to bring more people into the user base, and to really highlight the true strength of Pentax - lenses.

I would consider FF based on what you are saying. I would by an used K-1. If you are loaded with DA ltds - then by all means.

It is very enlightening reading the posts. What is emerging is that $1,500 seems to be the sweet spot. Some are willing to go higher, especially K-3 folks. KP guys sound like to me not entirely convinced quite yet. K-1 people sound like to me not convinced at all, and I am one of them. If above $2,000, then it just may test our devotion to the brand (maybe not for FF camp though). Would this camera, at $1,500, convince other brands shooters to switch? Probably not. It will need more than a bright VF. This camera has had a misfortune of being hit by COVID crisis during a very crucial time of the development cycle. There had to be a financial hit. Would they recoup that by hitting the consumers, or eat it and move on? What if it dame out at $1,299? That will catch my attention.

Thank you for that but I did have to laugh. I mean this is a real point of contention. That being said, Iím just curious how many people are willing to how much for this beauty all things considered.

Soooo am I correct in assuming that you will pay up to $2,500? Iím not quite there, yet. Once I see all features I may change my mind.

I am just curious what the consensus is around here.

To put it in perspective . . . .

Leica CL (aps-c): $ 3,000

Fuji X pro-3 (aps-c): $2,000

Nikon D500 (aps-c); $1,500

Sony a6600 (aps-c): $1,200

Sony A7iii (FF): $1,600 - just saying
Pentax K-1 mkII : $1,800 - well you guys know

It seems to me itís rather dumb to place it between Leica and Fuji. Or is it? I ainít paying no $2,500. I can see someone going for $2,000. Maybe. Between X pro-3 and d500?

What is your price?

That's what I think as well, not so much from the perspective of price points but more from the fact that A7c is probably not aimed at the same segment of the market. Knew seems like to me is geared towards existing Pentax user base with DA limited already in their hands. I don't think it is a camera that tries to entice non Pentax user to get into Pentax system. I doubt anyone thinking about getting Knew will look at this camera and find it attractive. I do think that people who are thinking of migrating to FF sensor camera from smaller sensor sized camera may find this intriguing though. Sony has had a head start in lens development for FF mirrorless and their line up is rather diverse in that regards.

Say, this camera is sub $3,000 and Knew approaching $2,500 . . . . it probably would catch my attention.

If low light performance of the sensor is superb which it is reasonable to expect, you may get away with not having fast lenses.

When a manufacture puts out a new product - I don't think there is any dispute in that they would like to sell as many of the new model as they possibly can. Because we are seeing lots of negative sentiments here on our forum, whether it is legit or not, the concern seems to be real and should not be ignored. In my view the concern was real enough that they put out a warning shot to address it (not sure if that is the case, of course). I am just kind of perplexed that by adding the flippy they really don't lose much other than few millimeters in thickness, which I argue that it is barely noticeable. I think if you weigh between the negative sentiments that may arise by having a flippy (I am sure there will be ) and or not having a flippy, me thinks that you may capture more of the potential market by having it. Would it kill them to have it? My guess is no - but there may be other technical reasons that none of us are privy to that makes it not such a good decision to have it. I am a flippy proponent for sure and I am leaning towards not buying this model because I am so very happy with K-1 and I am fine with the size of it. But I would consider buying it if did have a flippy. I understand the argument that the Knew is catered to a certain style of photography and that is just fine. But in this shrinking market it gets me worried a bit. You say why not just buy a K-1 and you are correct, but there are many who have K-1 who are used to having a flippy that just may buy Knew if it had one as well. It's a calculated move (or risk) that they are taking, and I really hope it does not backfire on them. I genuinely do want them to be successful with this new camera even if I don't plan to buy it.

I have said the same. Itís not like this requires a huge leap in technology. Or, have a small spiffy separate module that works as a back up and sports a LCD screen that can be attached to the body or something like that.

Since you are going ahead to have it repaired it may well be a moot point, but not too long ago Monochrome pointed to me to Erik Hendrickson at Home-Pentaxs. I was thrilled to the moon with his service. Had my 43 Ltd repaired in no time with reasonable cost of repair and shipping.

For their sake I hope they did not over promise about the new OVF. That would be a bummer.

---------- Post added 08-26-20 at 08:32 AM ----------

ďBragĒ may not be the correct word buy they sure seem very high on the new OVF. I mean they made a video about it, literally. If AF is a HUGE improvement - that would be a news amongst us. I never thought that their OVF was ever sub par like their AF, although I gotta say itís not as bad as it has been reported.

---------- Post added 08-26-20 at 08:37 AM ----------

I kinda sorta remember people talking smack about how itís gonna break and this and that. But it turned out to be very sturdy. I like it a lot, actually. Iím just surprised they seem to have chosen not to have the flippy. I really am.

Yeah I would say that is a pretty good argument. But from what we have heard from Pentax - they are not really bragging about a huge improvement in AF or fps. If this new cam is for fast action, you would think they would touting that more than OVF that looks like FF. But yes I do see your point there.

Oh yeah I agree. But it also might imply that this really is a huge issue for many. Me personally, if indeed there is no articulating screen - then I am hugely surprised about it. There must be an alternative solution, some novel features that makes you say "ahhhhhhhhh, that is brilliant!!"

---------- Post added 08-25-20 at 03:29 PM ----------

Dave, assumption it is, but pretty clear to me they are not having it. Ya, some people are going off on it, but again it may mean that this maybe something that many people here really want or need.

---------- Post added 08-25-20 at 03:34 PM ----------

This is a fabulous point. Many sound as though they are obliged to give Ricoh a very valued opinion of theirs for the sake of better product in the future. That being said - I would not be surprised (although I have no insider knowledge of this at all) if someone from Pentax reads the forum. I know for a fact that Leica folks actually do pay rather close attention to their forum members for our complaints. It is not a bad place to look. We are all very passionate about Pentax. Most of us care than not care. They just may be checking in without anybody here not knowing about it. They do openly say they want to listen to our needs. Why not look here?

Mark, I see your point wholeheartedly. There is definitely a truth to much of what you are saying. After all this is a forum for Pentax users and alike.

But I do think that there should be a place in this forum for posts that reflect displeasures as well. No cameras or brands are perfect. None of them get it all correct. I imagine Pentax will find some negative comments useful for future product designs while I fully understand that Pentax cannot and should not try to please every single user out there. I find it as much a learning experience to see what people don't like. At times it is reassuring to see some people not liking things that I don't find appealing. I think that the forum is much richer for it, or much more real when both sides of the coin are represented, more or less.

How do we do that in all good taste? Quite honestly, I have no idea.

I just find it weird that the FF flagship of Pentax has an articulated screen but K-new the APS-C “flagship” does not appear to. It was at least at one time a philosophy that Ricoh prescribed to but for some reasons abandoned for this camera. I guess they really want you to peak into that OVF.

I also find it weird that those want the moveable screen get crucified. I don’t remember forum members crucifying K-1 for having it. Is K-1 a superb camera despite having an articulated screen?

I suppose this is really about OVF vs Live view, latter being blasphemy. The most ironic is that the end products the pictures will not be able to tell you if one used OVF or LV/EVF.

I just find it silly.
