Yellowstone is a fantastic, surreal part of this planet, shaped by that huge caldera below it. I donít think any other parts of the world has so much condensed into such a small area...amazing lakes, mountains, water falls, geysers, thermal pool and the fantastic wildlife - got to be a nature loverís paradise.

Wow, high praise indeed, coming from someone local...thank you so much, you made my day!

Thanks...I guess I was speaking as compared to 2010. That time, not only did I take my tripod, I had multiple primes in my photo vest, with various ND corking filters and polarizer - my wife had to kept waiting for me. This time, we went with 4 others and I did not want photography to get in the way. I still managed to take 2,000 photos :p

Only YSNP/GTNP and GC have we visited more than once .... it is quite a place, especially if you spent some days there and go out early and return late.

Thank you!

In 2010 crowd wasn’t a major issue other than at Old Faithful. This year at certain times there’s big city traffic to get out of villages....I think they have like 100X more rooms in Canyon now. Also busses of tourists jostling for spot at the Grand Canyon areas.

However, Lamar, Hayden and Dunraven areas were great...probably even more animal activities, even close to lodges. It’s definitely worth a visit. I did not find the geyser/thermal area too crowded either. Only the villages and the Grand canyon part. Magical place...

Do you think Montana beef is better than what you get in the east coast? We had a ribeye on a small place in downtown Bozeman and it was out of this world...being a college student at that time,, I don’t know you’ll know the answer (if it was anything like my college days, lol)...just curious.

Actually we saw all of those except beavers in this trip, the images weren’t that great

We saw large herds of elk too, but this was a close up.

Believe it’s a female Bighorn sheep (need some color correction)

Just to show we saw bear and wolves on a carcass

May be we should go back a 3rd time to get better photos, lol...

Most of these were taken with the Sigma 50-500mm...the other lenses were Pentax 12-24/4 and there may be some shots with the Tamron 17-50/2.8. Exif is intact. K-5, K-7 body...obviously not abstract, don’t know how to change that.

July/2019 trip...it was a family trip and not a photography trip. So, no tripod and just some shots I took as we were enjoying the area. I was there in 2010 with all the best gear and this time I decided to settle for some quick shots.

That's true....they brought down a wildebeest the previous evening and still has it hidden somewhere. This is their appetizer for tonight. It's five cheetah brothers.

Thank you for your compliments.

The whole hunt series is here...if you want, you can click and watch as a slideshow.

softening flash light with ambient lighting

This does not address your question, however, just in case you didn't know at times the built in flash can do the triggering. With my k5 and 540 FGZ, the built in flash acts as the trigger for using 540 wireless.

Will this power pack help with recycle time for my 540 flash?

I've never really shot much with M mode, as I was concerned moving from room to room, with areas of back lit to solid walls to areas of various brightness will require too much tweaking. However, if exposure is same, it would be ideal.

I was wondering whether the Godox flash could replace the 540 in all aspects and thus the HSS concern.

But, overall I agree. Godox flash will be an excellent choice to reduce recycle time for interior shots, for those who don't rely on P-TTL much.

---------- Post added 11-19-2016 at 05:01 AM ----------

I took one wide angle shot and I was surprised how well illuminated all the subjects in the next room were. There is no way the flash alone did all of that, so ISO 1600 indeed helped there.

Noise was only an issue when I tried to crop real tight, even then only viewed on ipad etc., doubt would show up much on 5X7 prints.

Given how well ISO 1600 worked for prints, I do not want to give up on high ISO flash photography. With what you've said, good batteries with ISO 800 should give me what I need. I will up the ISO, if large areas beyond the typical reach of flash needs illuminated and see how that works.

I agree. ISO 400 was good even with k10D and I'm sure ISO 800 be fine nowadays. With my k5 id like to shoot at ISO 400 if I can, as it will allow for extreme cropping.

The lowest ISO possible is the only reasonable setting for HSS.

Thank you for the battery recommendation, Amazon is selling 2500 mAh Ni-Mh regukar Sanyo batteries.

My photos shot at ISO 1600, f8 were over exposed but easily recovered, post processing. These were printed at 5X7 only and the portraits were phenomenal. If not for flash work, frankly at 5X7 even iPhone pictures are almost as good. But with bounced flash and the reflector pulled up the portrays were extremely evenly lit for pleasing results.

5 years ago I read strobist and had diffusers (didn't really like them) and was well versed in technique. This time ISO 1600 chosen for faster recycle wasn't the ideal choice even though I got stellar results. I will try ISO 400-800 once I get the new batteries and see. For now, will skip on the battery pack, as the expenses doesn't justify the very infrequent use.

Thanks, that's helpful. I've wondered why flash the batteries were still needed.

Thanks! You do make a good point about the extra weight and size.

---------- Post added 11-17-2016 at 06:58 AM ----------

hmmm! I am spoiled with P-TTL and looks like this offers HSS only with Canon, is that true?

---------- Post added 11-17-2016 at 07:00 AM ----------

6 sec sounds about right at around iso 200-400, which was slow and I bumped it to iso 1600 and was much shorter (max 2 sec)
