How do I install ICC profiles in Lightroom?

Quite possibly; the printing service doesn't indicate what color space the ICC profile uses.

It end in .icm. I tried installing some other printers' ICC profiles without problems, so I ended up writing this printing service to see what they have to say. Anyway, I"ll let you know!

I verified that the ICC profile in question is in that folder, but it doesn't appear in the list of ICC profiles that are available to use in Lightroom. How do I fix this problem?

I downloaded an ICC profile from a printing service, and I don't seem to be able to use it in Lightroom.

Here's what I tried:
-- Right-clicking on the downloaded ICC profile and accepting Window's option to install it
-- Verifying that the ICC profile was, in fact, installed in the correct Windows system folder
-- In Lightroom, checking "Soft Proofing" in the "develop" window
-- Under "Profile," selecting "Other,"
-- In the dialogue box that comes up, selecting "Include Display Profiles"

...and the ICC profile I downloaded does not show up in the list of options I can check. After much googling, I am stumped. Does anyone have any advice?

(I'm using Windows 7 and Lightroom 5.5).

Thanks!

Posterization in photo prints from Adoramapix

Hmmm. I just checked the Adoramapix FAQ page, and they don't offer ICC profiles but they do recommend that images be submitted in sRGB color space. That's the color space I've been using to export my photos.

So, other than using .tiffs, it sounds like there isn't a lot else I could have done in this particular instance? And I'm guessing in the future it would be better to go with a printing service that does offer ICC profiles so I can hammer out all of these little technical issues before I start.

Not sure if I can upload .tiffs, but your comment prompted me to figure out if I can export .tiffs from Lightroom, and the answer is yes. Anyway, thanks! While we're at it, is there a particular color space I should export my photos in?

The compression artifacts are definitely not in the original images I sent.

Posterization in photo prints from Adoramapix

I recently ordered some prints from Adoramapix, and a number of them show some sort of banding/posterization in areas of the image that should have a smooth color gradient, e.g. the sky. This banding is not visible in the original image. What is causing this problem, and what can I do to fix it?

Example pictures here: Posterization Printing Problems - Album on Imgur

Some technical details:
-- Most of these photos use the K-3's full resolution, 6000 x 4000 pixels.
-- The files are JPEGs edited from RAW files in Lightroom 5.5 and exported at 90% quality.
-- The images are printed on Fuji Deep Matte paper from Adoramapix, with no color correction.
-- The problem manifests in print sizes from 8x10 to 20x30.
-- I calibrate my monitor for photo editing.
-- This is not a rare problem; it shows up in four of eleven photos in my last batch of prints, and eight of the fifteen-ish photos before that.

So anyway. I'm guessing that the problem stems from using too few ink colors to print too many image colors, but I don't know what approach would fix that. Is this a problem endemic to printing smooth gradients, or would I get better results using e.g. a different file type, different photo paper, or a different print lab?

Thanks!

My K-3 died. What now?

From what other users had reported with similar problems, the cost of a repair was something in the $300-500 rage, which is more than I want to spend on a camera that's worth about that much. But I could send it in and get it looked at, at least.

My K-3 died. What now?

Hello, everyone! Here's another "help me choose a new camera body" thread.

One of my two K-3 bodies died recently, and I need to replace it with...something. I've been incredibly happy with my K-3's, and ordinarily I would have just gone ahead and bought whatever the newest high-end APS-C body was, but the K-3 ii has been discontinued, I can't find any used K-3 ii bodies from the usual venues I'd buy from, and so now I have some decisions to make.

I do mostly landscape photography, the non-casual sort: camp, get up at 5 AM to catch the sunrise, do a bunch of PP, push the sensor to its limits, that sort of thing. Besides that, I do some studio portrait photography.

The way I see it, my options are:

Used K-1: This is pretty much everything I'd hope for, but it's a lot more than I'd like to spend, I'm not sure about the weight, and I don't currently own any weather-sealed FF lenses, and I don't have the budget to buy any.

KP, K-5: Great cameras, but I'm serious enough about what I'm doing that I feel I really need the dual SD card slots for redundancy.

K-70: All of the above disadvantages, plus, given the sort of accidents I've had, I *really* need extra-rugged body.

GR: The idea of seeing the world through a take-everywhere 18mm lens is pretty appealing, but, honestly, it's not a major use case for me to be doing serious photography in places where I can't lug around a big bag of gear.

And, for reference, here's my list of lenses:
APS-C: 8mm Rokinon, 18-55, 20-40, 15, 21, 40, 55-300
Full-frame: 14mm Rokinon, 31mm, K 55mm 1.8, 77mm, M 100mm macro

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

I'm guessing that's probably not it, because it turned on in the morning and refused to turn on just a few hours later. But yeah, that's still a great thought and definitely worth trying.

Thanks! Merry Christmas to you, too!

Hi! My K-3 body (probably 5 years old at this point, 20-30,000 shutter count) stopped working today-- it won't turn on. I tried the obvious and used a different battery that I knew was charged, tried with and without memory cards and lens, in different camera modes, etc., and nothing worked.

Is there anything else I should try, or is it time to move on?

Thanks!

Lenses for Yosemite, San Francisco, Pacific highway trip by a Brit!!

FWIW, I'm in the middle of a similar trip. So far, I'd estimate my lens usage to be about 60% 20-40mm Limtied, 25% 77mm Limited, and the rest divided between the 15mm Limited and the 8mm Samyang fisheye. The 55-300 comes out occasionally for wildlife. In the past I've used the 15mm Limited way more, but I seem to be on a telephoto kick at the moment.

Is asahi man actually a reliable source? I remember a few years back he was saying that the FA Limiteds were going to be discontinued... and they're still here...

I made such a trip about a year and a half ago. I took my 14mm Rokinon, my 15mm Limited, my 20-40mm Limited, my 77mm Limited, and my 55-300 ED WR, and maybe some other primes, I don't remember. In practice, I just used the 15, the 20-40, and the 55-300. There was so much going on that I had to minimize lens changes.

I don't think there's a conflict between just pushing buttons and expressing my creativity. In the field, I take every shot I think might turn out well. Most of the artistic decisions for me come in editing/postprocessing.

Yeah, the K-S2 is great, and I think you'd be really happy with the 18-135. It's a nice lens-- even though I have some really swanky gear, I still borrow it off my dad sometimes!

Yep! Normal, as far as I can tell from my thousands of pictures with that lens so far. It's worse wide open, and gets better when you stop down. I found that the vignetting was easily cleaned up in post.
