Has anyone seen a breakdown of chrome vs black SL models produced? I would like to acquire a black one since I already have the chrome. I believe I have only ever seen a couple black ones for sale anywhere but I usually see the chrome model with only a short search.

Pentax MX meter shows „green“, between two speed-values. Does it hurt the shutter?

This question about the MX shutter was talked about here about three years ago: Pentax MX shutter speed dial - PentaxForums.com
It was not definitively solved but someone, especially tech savvy, may have additional info now.

I agree with stevebrot though, better to stick to the full setting for shutter speed and adjust the aperture ring which can easily be set in-between marked f-stops if necessary.

Another push for the M35-70 f2.8-3.5 from me. When it first appeared about 40 years ago, its large aperture seemed offset by the extra weight and bulk, if you can believe that. Compared to lots of faster autofocus lenses it now looks very compact. Inexpensive indeed, last year mine was $89 in beautiful condition.

Is that the AF or MF? I have the A, manual focus lens and much prefer it for macro than auto-focus. Bonus - the A lens is much less expensive.

Oh yes, some of us poor, needy lens-buying addicts still have a few gaps in our dusty collections even after many years of amassing gear. I feel unfulfilled, how sad.

Thanks for posting, that's a great result. I'm considering the same camera/lens combination myself. The quickly rising price of the 105 lens is proving to be a problem though. It seems to me that over the last couple of years the price has suddenly increased. When I was not thinking about buying one I used to see ebay listings for about half of what they usually cost now.

Which Pentax lens do you most enjoy showing off to friends?

I haven't put my equipment on open display anywhere and only really show it indoors among friends. However if I am out carrying a bag of gear then someone sees a lens when I use it. The one that has been getting comment for decades is the SMC Pentax K 15/3.5. The very large bulbous front element is a curiosity to most people. I guess that one and a few other solid metal and glasses oldies could be used in self-defense if absolutely necessary.

Macro Why to reverse 50mm on extension tubes?

Lens aberrations, and curvature of field in particular, can be much exaggerated at higher than normal magnifications while focussing closer than the helicoid allows for in most consumer camera lenses. Average lenses are usually corrected to about 1/10 lifesize, that is, a minimum focus of about 10 times the lens' focal length. These modern lenses often have a larger entrance pupil (front element) than exit pupil (rear element). When reversed the optical configuration allows the rear of the lens designed to best focus on a flat field (your sensor or film plane) to face the subject and the relative distances of much smaller rear element to focal plane distance compared to a greater subject to front element distance is restored. At higher magnification the Some lenses will result in a marked improvement used this way. Older style optics, macros, and adapted enlarger lenses may not show a difference because they are usually using a symmetrical design where the elements are configured the same back to front as front to back.

Exactly right. That stylized font has been misunderstood often since 1980 but curiously few ever seemed to notice the same type of black line through the downward stroke of the X. I used to hear a lot of people ask about the Pentax ILX (eye-ell-ex) when I worked at a store back then.

No, but it's under $5000 Canadian. I've been fantasizing about for a few weeks now. And that's all it will ever be - I often can't justify spending a tenth of that price so this is a safe fantasy. LBF not LBA.

The Program Plus and all other M and A series automatic cameras had an electronically timed vertical run shutter with stepless speeds in Auto mode. The Pentax Forums camera review section can be consulted for further info.

The #6 post Kerrowdown. You certainly can use 200 and this is a perfect example. A portrait masterpiece technically and in the capture. Just striking.

On the other hand, that Vivitar is an example of the more complex, expensive build that was needed to begin to solve issues with zooms of the day. It was quite heavy and more expensive than most designs at the time with its 14 elements.

In general, all lenses are limited at close focusing distance and especially at larger apertures in producing their best image. Aberrations increase when more light scatters through the edges of lens elements at large aperture. Also increased magnification at close distance magnifies flaws. More sophisticated designs and often special glass invented to handle much of the problems is more common in later model lenses at much increased cost. Even these are still at their very best stopped down a little and at mid-range focusing.
