That's how I feel about a lot of topics of conversation these days. Had to look up where Riga is, a beautiful place!

Anyways a lot of these cameras with defective aperture units are nearing 10 years old. I am currently typing on a laptop of similar age and have come to expect this near obsolete device to fail any day and would not blame the manufacturer that this complex electronic device did not last 50 years. We cannot compare the reliability of the much more simple SLRs of the 70's to the complex DSLRs of today, and I think a lot of problem stems from that. And as others have said, these cameras aren't completely dead, they have just lost some automation and are still functional when used with lenses with manual aperture rings.

DA 35mm 2.4 Plastic Fantastic metal mount conversion ?

Yeah I started to do this basically after my first lens change. Coming from the Minolta Alpha mount back then the Pentax mount felt a lot less smooth to engage lenses on to.

Unfortunately I had this problem on at least 2 different camera bodies that I can remember. And hadn't discovered the wonderful world of m42 yet.. :)

DA 35mm 2.4 Plastic Fantastic metal mount conversion ?

Curious to know if they check the plastic mounts from wear and getting loose over time because as my post above from 2 years ago stated (before this thread was resurrected), my 55-300 DAL was starting to shave off plastic bits into the mirror box. And a DA 50mm 1.8 I had also was showing quite a bit of wear too. Acquired a cheap Tokina AF lens with a metal K mount I was going to transplant to one of them but then decided to just sell off the plastic lenses and replace them with different ones.

Has anyone tried to remove this? How necessary is it? I'd be interested in trying this if it means I got f2.

Another thought I had was when the cameras were tested for durability (assuming that is a thing?) they were probably shot in bursts up to the 100k mark but the problem of the aperture block failing seems to be related to less usage, which is why it would have been hard to discover this in testing?

I don't think it hurts to leave it in debug mode, you just have to be careful not to accidentally change any settings in that menu or it could ruin the camera?

I bought my K-30 used for around $250, used it for about 4-5 years until the aperture failed, then sold it for about $150 disclosing its aperture failure. I'd say $100 for the use I got out of it was about the same amount the camera would have already depreciated anyways. Now I use a K-3 and a K-x for backup, both solid cameras. I didn't need to upgrade to the K-3 but I don't regret doing it as it's clearly a better camera. It would be a nice gesture if Ricoh extended warranty coverage on affected cameras for that specific issue, but by now the cameras are already 8+ years old so that's expecting a lot. And if a batch of aperture blocks were faulty from the supplier, that really isn't Ricoh's fault unless they really did know about the failing parts and used them anyways?

I think anyone and everyone that wanted a mirrorless has already gone that route and will either stay there or come back to optical viewfinder, like I did. Pentax should be just fine doing what they are doing- staying small and specialized. The DSLR boom that started 10 years ago when new models were getting churned out every couple of months has passed. Everyone that jumped on that craze either got serious and upgraded their beginner DSLR to something more advanced/higher end and stuck with it, or they let that cheap DSLR sit in its bag hardly used as cell phones improved to the point where the inconvenience of carrying a big camera was not worth it to them anymore. Just my thoughts.

When I first enabled debug mode, the screen went blank until I pushed the menu button, which kinda startled me at first, but after I pushed the menu button and everything looked as normal. When scrolling through the menus left to right there is a new tab that is hidden between two menus, in other words, it doesn't have a tab but it's there. When done with debug mode you just go back to that tab and there is a setting at the bottom where you can disable debug mode. And I left the file on my sd card in case I ever want to go back and make adjustments in the field.

I am trying to fix a backfocus issue with my wife's k-x. I formatted an 8gb Sandisk Extreme Pro card, saved only the text file created in wordpad to it named MODSET.492 with the text [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] with enter pressed after the text (same as carriage return + new line)? The firmware is 1.03. When powering on with Av +/- button pressed it will not go into debug menu. Anything else I should be doing?

---------- Post added 10-13-20 at 03:33 PM ----------

Figured out my problem: How to Force Windows Explorer to Always Show You the File Extensions (howtohaven.com)

The .txt was still hidden after the file name until I changed the windows setting in "file explorer options" to force it to show all file extensions by unchecking the box under the view tab that says "hide extensions for known file types." Renaming my file after that by removing the .txt I could enter debug mode and fix my back focusing issue. The camera is a whole new beast now! I am not super computer savvy but since the file does not exist anywhere I could find online it actually isn't that hard to make on your own. Hope this helps someone bring new life into their old k-x that they probably thought was low resolution but was really just getting out of focus photos!

Pentax K-S2 fail. Alternative? Give up?

You could try using your 31mm f1.8's aperture ring to work around the problem. Just make sure in the menus you set the camera to allow this. Or the K-5ii, K-3, K-3ii are solid cameras that do not have this failure and they could be had for not too much money used. You could still get a bit of money for your K-S2 if you sold it to someone that uses manual lenses, as my K-30 developed the issue a few years ago and I still got around $150 for it.

I'm a little embarrassed about all the marketing about the 3mm of nose relief and the auto off eye sensor for the rear screen that was present on my entry level Sony a330 DSLR I bought in 2009. Hardly new tech and though it was convenient on my Sony after switching to Pentax in 2013 I simply learned to leave the rear screen off and haven't missed it. And those 3mm really aren't going to make a difference lol

I'd say to try to fix the hinge that holds it shut, maybe its just jammed? But electrical tape leaves a residue too. Painters masking tape does not

Holy necro thread.

I don't think the battery is capable of reason. But even if it is mine was fine for years and I never left it without a battery in the compartment.

If it is the aperture block failure, the camera will still work with lenses that have a manual aperture ring. If you do sell it, you could still get around $100 for it since a lot of people like to score a cheaper camera to use with their old Takumar lenses.
