Lenses for K70

I have both the DFA 100mm macro and SMC 35mm Ltd Macro for my K70 and both are excellent. If I had to choose one, I'd say the 35mm Ltd Macro, as there is just something magical about that lens. It has the pixie dust thing going on.

Amazon UK have the Pentax DA* 50-135mm lens at 749 at the moment. That's the lowest price I've seen for this beautiful lens.

Tiny Mushrooms

Tiny little mushrooms growing in the moss on the north side of a horse chestnut tree. Shot handheld, bracing myself against the tree trunk to try and keep the camera steady for this macro shot - whilst trying not to squash any of the other little mushrooms on the tree.

HD DA 40mm F2.8 Ltd with Pentax K70. I do like this lens, though I keep thinking I'll accidentally lose the lens cap as it is so tiny.

I did an online course, A Year With My Camera, run by Emma Davies and it was excellent. I learnt an awful lot in the space of that year.

How to be a Happy Photographer

Get enough technical knowledge of your camera that you can feel confident enough to decide on the settings when taking photos, so you control the process. It's that feeling of achievement and that I haven't just stumbled across good photos purely by trial and error that I enjoy. Then take lots of photos and print them. I print photos and stick the latest ones to my fridge with magnets so I look at them each day and they brighten up my life.

As the evening's are drawing in, I thought I'd try a bit of nighttime photography. Here's the Odeon cinema in my hometown shot with my Pentax K-70 and an SMC Pentax-M F1.7 50mm lens, ISO3200, 1/100 and F8.

anyone else constantly hunting for camera bags?

I ended up buying, I think, five bags in search of the right ones for my needs. I've settled on a Tarion RS-01, which is a nice shoulder bag with space for camera plus lens and two extra lenses. It has lots of pockets for extra stuff and some that expand should you need them. That is my usual out-and-about camera bag. Then I have a Mindshift Backlight 18L, for when I want to carry a tripod and more gear when I head out hiking in search of landscape photos.

I'm still looking for a good solution for when I go cycling. I don't have a car, so get around mostly by bicycle. But I'm wary of putting the camera gear in a bag on the bike, for fear of things getting bounced around on the bumpy potholed roads around here. I'm sure there's a gap in the market for a bicycle pannier bag with built in suspension.

Who here never, ever used the video mode?

I've only ever gone into the video mode accidentally, i.e. when I turn on my K70, only to discover it was already on and I've put it into video mode instead. I think it is about the only feature I've never actually tried properly to see what it can do. Thanks to this thread revival, I feel like I need a video project now.

Do you use Live View or Viewfinder

I nearly always use the OVF, unless I'm shooting really low down and the angle would be awkward. I use live view occasionally when manually focusing to check the focus.

what do you set your programable buttons for?

As I always shoot in raw I didn't need the Raw/FX1 button for its normal function, so I set it to do depth of field preview instead. Useful when doing macro shots and the like. I've left FX2 at its default setting.

How do I meter after setting up back button focus?
Posted By RichardJ

I have a K70. The metering becomes active when any button is pressed on the camera and it will actively then meter the scene, adjusting shutter/aperture/ISO as appropriate depending upon what mode you are in. It does this for 10 seconds. If no further buttons are pressed within those 10 seconds, e.g. to take a photo or to auto focus, then the metering system disengages. It wakes up again for another 10 seconds when a button is next pressed, and so on. The length of time the meter is active can be controlled through menu C1-3 "Meter Operating Time". You have options for 10s, 3s, 30s, or continuous. The default is 10s.

This metering behaviour happens regardless of whether back button focus is enabled or not.

When back button focus is enabled, on the K70, you can no longer use the AE Lock feature to lock exposure. This is because the only button that you can set to do AE-L, is the same button you've just changed to do back button focus instead. Effectively, back button focus means you can no longer lock the exposure, the camera will always auto meter instead. That auto metering will start as soon as you press any button on the camera.
