Will Pentax use the 43 MP Sony APC sensor for the next K-3?

I don't love the idea of a 43mp APSC sensor. But then again I would have to try it to really know. I would rather have a 43mp full frame sensor in a camera a little bit faster than a K1. :)

Focus or SR issues with BIF shots

I would turn off SR as well and really work on steady holding technique. You can't raise the shutter speed high enough to compensate for an unsteady very long focal length. I also think a smaller focus area might help.

A DSLR and a small prime. No flash. Have fun! I would have a really hard time going back to film for low light stuff especially if I had a K1 sitting around.

HD Pentax DA 560mm f/5.6 ED AW replacement : what are your thoughts ?

I certainly would love an upgraded version of the 560. Maybe a 600 f5.6 like Chris wants. I think that really is the only missing lens in pentax lineup. Well a 300mm f2.8 and ff tc. :)

I would like the faster stepper motor of the 150-450 and be very light and compact. I don't want a PF or DO lens. I just want it shorter and lighter. And around $4k new.

Bird photography hit rate

As you have found out, this form of wildlife photography tends to require another level of precision and technique. 200mm is really on the short end, but can be done. Focusing is easier when the bird fills the frame more. You need to move the AF points around and really try to focus on the head and not the body. If you look at videos of bird photographers on YouTube that are using big lenses like 600mm f4 they almost never shoot wide open for birds. F8 is not a bad place to be on an APSC body. It really comes down to practice and getting close enough.

Would a sirui sr3204 be measurably better? Or put another way, would the Oben above be a good 'forever' tripod?

K3 Mk3 viewfinder overlay vs KP

The KP,k3 and others are leds that are injected into the back of the prizm. The K1 and K3iii are an lcd screen between the mirror box and prizm and are side lit with a red led I believe.

I think the K1 and K3iii tech is more refined but I like the previous tech just fine and as you mention it has advantages.

K-1 Mark 3: What K-3 Mark 3 features could become part of a K-1 update now?

I guess it will be a 60ish mp sensor, bsi, 7 fps in full frame mode, the AF module and tracking from the k3iii along with all the image processing algorithms. Larger OVF but they may drop gps for the external one.

But they might make a smaller full frame as well. Who knows.

comments and opinions needed ASAP Phoenix trip Grand Canyon and Ball Games - thanks

I personally wouldn't bring a long lens to a baseball game unless I had some personal reason for making the effort. Like, I know a player, or I had always wanted to get a picture of a favorite player, etc. I'd take a camera with a wide lens and focus on having fun and documenting the trip itself.

I would personally take the K3iii and sigma 10-20, and then pick between the 43, 55, 77 or 100mm macro. If I wanted to make it really interesting, the lx and 43 would go along for taking documentary images. And then I would spend the whole trip thinking that I should have just brought the K1, 24 and 77 and called it a day.

Tripod and gimbal for DFA 150-450

Hi all, I got a 150-450 to play with for a while. Handholding is fine but I think I could use a better tripod for bird and nature photography. I'm looking at a sirui am284 for legs but I can't tell if they will be robust enough. Are there other recommendations in the 'less esepnsive' range along with a gimbal? I know a good tripod is essential but I need something that is light enough that I will actually use and sturdy enough for this lens.

Abstract Birding with DA 300 + tc1.4

Thanks folks! After looking through the series more, I do think I have a focusing issue. Some were front focused but the majority are back focused. So I think I'll first fine tune at a longer distance and see if that makes a difference. It sounds like I need to work on stability and getting ISO down as well. Unfortunately getting closer is just going to require more time stalking. The birds at this location love to hang out at an island off the shore of this lake so it means if I want to get closer I'm going to need to get on the water somehow. Not sure I'm there, just yet. Thanks for everyone's feedback!

Abstract Birding with DA 300 + tc1.4

Hi, I'm working on improving my long lens technique especially with birds. Here's an example of an image I can't decide if I can get better IQ out of. The setup was a KP, DA300, x1.4 and I was resting it on a railing on a solid dock and I believe SR was on. So, it should have been steady enough. I didn't apply any sharpening or NR - just straight out of darktable. I think with only the DA300 I would have gotten a much crisper image. So, what's the feedback?
  • This is about what you can expect

  • Bird is too far for this setup

  • You need a tripod for this to get the ISO way down

  • Focus is off

  • IBIS should disabled

  • Need to buy the 150-450 or DA 560 :)

The light wasn't great - I was shooting with mostly overcast but the hotspot of light in front (so whatever dimensionality there was at the time was backlighting the bird). So, there's a lot more there to improve but I've been wondering from a gear perspective what I should expect with a shot like this. Now, I know I can edit this and make a pretty awesome image for screen viewing, so I'm not complaining but I am hoping to improve my technique to get to a much cleaner starting point.

Simple. Export your settings so that you can import them indo darktable and you won't ever have to deal with that again.

Wonder how much Fujifilm invested in medium format?

I think pentax pulled the latest 645 project because of fujifilm. At least that's the rumor. I don't particularly see the attraction to the Fuji MF system, but then again I'm not the target audience. I can't even convince myself yet to upgrade to full frame!!!

But I don't know if the investment in the bodies is all that great. And the lenses don't seem extraordinarily different in any way. Fuji knows how to make this stuff already so I don't really see them needing to poor eons of engineering into their MF line.

Thanks folks. I think I've got a couple of issues. I think some calibration is in order seeing what others are doing with this combo. I also probably need to bump up shutter speed a little. I was at 1/800 and f6.3. but after a lot of editing I think the biggest issue was camera shake. Can someone point me to a technique for success with handholding this focal length or am I looking at a monopod or tripod with this setup to reliably get there. I would say I am still getting keepers, just the rate has plummeted.

Oh and SR off.

Buy it new if you are worried about sdm. My first copy was used and the sdm was not working well. I returned it, bought a new one for a ridiculously good deal and love the thing. It is the reason I haven't bought a fa 43 or 77 yet. Just can't justify them.

Hi all, I have been doing more BIF lately and have experimented with my 300mm with and without TC. It seems like AF and sharpness take a hit with the DA1.4 tc. More than I would have thought. Have others noticed this or is it just bad technique on my part? It also seems that with the tc the camera front focused more. I guess I could adjust the af fine tube settings with the combo, but does the camera track the lens with tc as a separate lens?

Ways to carry a landscape and nature kit

Thanks all. It will be a flexible setup so I think you have provided a couple more interesting ideas. The cheat strap is brilliant and I may give that a try. I like to hike with one lens on camera and the rest in the bag. So I think I may have to order a few products and return what doesn't work over a few springtime trials. I hate doing that because I end up finding out they all work well for different things. It's the worst!

Ways to carry a landscape and nature kit

Hi all. I'm planning this summers gear where we are focusing on travel to outdoor spaces, hiking, wildlife and nature. I have a backpack with an insert and am planning to carry the following.

DA* 300
DA 20-40
Maybe 100mm macro
Maybe 15 ltd

While out I may or may not carry it all, and I may leave the backpack and take just camera and a lens. I'm looking for advice on how to carry both a small setup (20-40) and long setup (300) with and without a backpack.

Black rapid strap under/over backpack
Peak design slide over backpack
Capture on backpack and another strap
Something else

I have a PD leash and it is great. Is there some other piece of gear I'm missing?
