Just starting UV photography - need help

I took two photos of my 395nm light with my Optomax 35mm lens with the UV band pass and hot mirror filters attached in a darkened room. Both had settings of f3.5, 1/10 second, and ISO 100. The Full Spectrum K-01 showed a large blob of specular white. The unconverted K3 III showed a tiny violet dot. This indicates to me that the camera, lens, and filters operate correctly. I have posted a picture below.

I tried the sunblock test and it failed. Obviously the sunblock is old and bad or one of the filters are bad.

I tried shining a 395nm flashlight at the unfiltered camera and it appeared as a specular white spot. I took unfiltered snaps and they all looked like images produced by other full spectrum cameras.

As for the Tiffen Hot Mirror filter, its specs indicate that it passes UV. Maybe mine is a counterfeit. A $70 counterfeit?

The UG1 might also be bad. It is opaque to visible light. But how to test it??

I am just starting UV photography. I have a full spectrum K-01 with UG-1 and Tiffen hot filters over the front of the lens.

I have four lenses that I intend to start with: Takumar Bayonet 135mm f2.5; Takumar Bayonet 28mm f2.8; Takumar Macro 50mm f4 1:1; and Optomax 35mm f3.5.

I am not even sure what is a good exposure. I don't know if the filters are working properly. It takes ISO 800 1/60 second at f4 during clear midday sun to get middle the bracketed of these exposures.

First the 50mm snaps.

Second the 35mm snaps

Last my handheld UV selfies with sunglasses

TIA

I too prefer to live with a smile and with the expectation that promises made are kept. Life is too short.

But dang it, I get disappointed too often.

If the beta 1.40 patch is installed, and a problem is found, can you back down to 1.31?

Is it possible?

These days?

Canon was marketing the f0.95 "Dream Lens" in the early '60s!

You need to do better than that!

P.S. It got a bit of a bad rep because of its ultra thin DOF with rangefinder focusing. When I use on my Sony A7II it is sharp and easier to focus.

I just bought two more links and two more barrel connectors to extend my magic arm by eight inches.

This should make it much easier to have it hold reflectors, shades, or lights when it is attached to my MT190CXPRO4 tripod.

The only question is will it have a detachable tripod foot.

Best travel lens

For the K10D.

Where are you traveling too?

Older cities, close quarters - Sigma 10-20 f3.5 ( older parts of Boston, NY, Jersusalem, London, Paris, Rome, ...)
You can get into narrow spaces. You can shoot buildings that are close by without having the "topple". At the long end you can take undistorted pictures of people.

Natural settings, wide visitas, close objects, far object - Pentax DA* 16-50
This is a weatherproof wide to tele zoom. That extra one millimeter at the wide end means a lot. If you want wide visitas or to take in most of an interior that can be done at the wide end. At the tele end portraits and selective landscapes. It is fast too.

Museums - Pentax 50mm f2.8 macro
This can be used for details small objects or entire paintings.

Zoos, wild animal parks - Pentax 55-300 older model
This is simple. You need the reach.

I did some preliminary testing on the IR filter. It is the Fotga brand. I used it on my Pentax 20-40 lens. It is my go to IR lens.

It is marked 530-720nm. Based on my experience with the trees in my neighborhood, the filter does not get up the cut-off of 720nm there is a little too much color there. At the other end it is not quite as colorful as the 530nm images I have seen from the camera conversion websites, however the trees near my house are not the same as those in the web images. It is not an apples to apples comparison. I can't be sure.

The is no banding or crosses present on the images. The images, thru the filter might be a little soft, I can't be sure. I did not use a tripod, nor did I use test chart to check.

This filter is just for play to help me decide which non 720nm cut-offs good filters I want to try. To spend $25 on the Fonga is better than buying three or four $100 filters to find the cut-offs frequenciesI like.

I just got a variable IR pass filter to use on my full spectrum K-01. It only cost $25. I will see what different frequency cut-offs look like.

It operates like a polarizer. Now I need a sunny day! :)

Hey everyone,

Take a look at this. It is a Lego project when completed would look like a 1950 Leica IIIf. Please go and take and support it. This is so cool. If they get enough supporters Lego will make and sell the kits. It does not anything to support.

It is not Pentax, but ...

I've had good luck buying used gear from stores, some now closed. In years past I used to buy more higher value items from eBay then have them checked out at a local camera repair shop here in the west valley. With the shop's closure I don't do that anymore. Only recently have I started buying here on the Forum.

I have had failures in years past ( ten and twenty years ago ) with purchased products at KEH that KEH remidied. Good for them. I have had had a mixed bag of success buying from individuals over eBay.

Recently major second hand purchases have been from:
Sigma 24-60 AF full frame lens on PF forums
Pentax Q wide angle zoom on PF forums
Manfrotto MT190 carbon fiber tripod on ebay
K1 II with 28-105 lens Map camera Japan
K3 II Map camera Japan
K-01 Roberts camera
Manfrotto Mg468 head KEH
Canon 20mm f2.8 lens Kenmore camera
