OK I'm in

Very few of the wide DA lenses work well even in square mode. The 12-24 is Ok from 20-24. The 14 DA shows vignetting even in square mode. DA 15 is also not great. The DA 40 and 70 work well in square mode.

Hope this is a help.

Auto focus issue on infinity

Hi Scott. This is an issue with the older bodies. It may be a slight front/back focus problem with your kit lens. There is a way to adjust that with the DS using debug mode. Have you ever used debug mode on the DS? If not search the site for info. Depending upon your firmware there are numerous posts. You could start here:

External charger is the way to go. USB-C only on travel etc. It works but a bit clunky. Red light is normal.

How well does the 16-85 compare with the 28-105?

I have the 16-85 for my K-3iii and the 28-105 on my K-1ii. Of the two, I prefer the 16-85 because of the wide angle coverage. Build quality is similar. The 28-105 is capable but not as versatile.

Over sharpened and too saturated for my taste but probably not HDR.

Depends upon your vantage point but a fast 50mm might be perfect. FA 50 1.4 or 1.7.

A blemish there will have no effect on performance. It just covers the switch area which has no function on the Pentax lens. Mine looks just like the photo.

HD DA 16-85... Vs.....DA 16-45 .. sharpness and colors at the wider end (16-20mm)

I had the 16-45 and now use the 16-85 on K-3iii. You are correct in saying the 16-45 is no slouch but it has some fairly obvious CA which presents as purple fringing. The 16-85 is much better corrected. Plus the focal length of the new lens is just so much more useful.

Poll: What Pentax image tone do you typically use in camera and/or post processing?

Raw+ shooter here. On the recent bodies, I use the auto setting which is getting to be rather intelligent in choosing based on color saturation of the subject and other parameters. The camera is usually choosing what I would have chosen for most situations. If it misses, I have the raw file.

Try the TRS first. It is the standard for DSLRs on Rode videomics and the other TRRS is used for iPhones etc.

K3 iii vs K3 vs K1 low light performance?
Posted By Pentax Syntax

I have the K-1 ii, the K-3 and the K-3 iii. Low light performance of the K-1 ii and K-3 iii are similar and certainly better than K-3. For K-3 at iso 6400, the noise is similar to iso 12800 on the other two. I do think the K-3 iii handles chroma noise better than the K-1 ii but the K-1 ii has a bit more dynamic range at low iso.

Yes and itís a fairly robust solution. You will still the GPS unit for Astrotracer but simple geotagging works from the smartphone.

What would you take to a wedding (if you were me)?

As you know, the traditional full frame lenses for weddings are 28-70 and 80-200 2.8. This covers most of what you will encounter. Keep it simple if possible. Of the lens you listed I would probably take the 35, 50, and 77.

Shoot for a week using the 16-85 at between 20-40 only. Do you feel limited (excuse the pun)? If not, go for it. If so you have your answer.

I have recovered my K-3 several times from drenching. As mentioned take out the battery and cards, leave everything open and let things dry out. Mine came back each time. If still wet use a seal lock bag around the camera with desiccant inside.

Recommended lenses for astro and planetary photography
Posted By Pentax Syntax

Astrotracer is good for wide field shots and the lenses you mentioned will all work. The 15-30 DFA is excellent for this type of shot. For planetary imaging, focal length is your friend and a telescope is a near necessity. You can use even a simple doublet refractor or SCT. Many use video capture with a simple webcam imager and average shots with good seeing even with a simple tracking alt-az mount.

K28 f3.5 Vs M28 f2.0

I had the M28 f2 and it was wonderful on film. I sold it when I switched to digital but I remember itís close focus ability was very good. I canít compare to the K28 3.5 but the 3.5 is much more readily available if you are assessing rarity.
