A lot of my woodworking tools in my basement hobby workshop now have a 'soft-start' feature to ramp up the load rather than just sucking maximum power immediately. I also have my cyclonic dust extraction system (basically a large shop-vac connected via a DIY cyclone canister) connected to a wi-fi controlled switch box that has a remote control I clip to my coveralls. When I want to use a dust making power tool I start the shop vac first and then the tool to distribute the load at startup and then at shut down I stop the tool and then the vac. By doing it that way I reduce the start-up load on the breaker panel/wiring and I also make sure the dust extraction lines are clear before and after tool operation.

I had a beige/light grey one in the late 60's and loved it. I was really into science, the space race and all things military (my father was an ex Royal Marine Commando (WWII era)) and my favourite discs included subjects like the NASA space programs, The Royal Navy and one covering ICBMs (this was at the height of the 'Cold War').

I also had a great tour of the luxurious Queen Mary cruise liner and a scenic tour of The Alps. I also had many multi-disc sets including several covering Disney movies/cartoons.

My mother bought herself one of the talking View Masters when they were first released but didn't use it much and it just gathered dust in a closet!

We started with a snow/ice pellet mix last night that changed to full snow later and continued overnight. We woke to about 1.5" (3.5 to 4 cm) of snow, un-ploughed roads (unusual for us as we live on a 4-lane city road) and temps of -5C (23F) with a 'feels like' of -13C (9F).

The singer you seek is actually my wife's all time favourite artist (one of mine too for that matter) and that is Sir Rod Stewart! He claimed in interviews that the lyrics are a bit mixed up and refer to several women in his life (some of them at the same time as the song was written while he was having one of his numerous affairs) but the final verse contains references to Rod's two favourite Scottish soccer teams, Dundee United and Celtic F.C. Rod was a very good soccer player and played for several youth/school teams and even tried out for a professional club in his late teens. He could have been a pro soccer player but thankfully music won out and we have all benefited from that over the years.

Ahh but.... the 'balti' curry was invented in Birmingham, UK in the 70's by Pakistani chefs who created a fusion of traditional Kashmiri recipes in a more Western style to appeal to the local population. Hence the creamy sauce served with Naan bread instead of rice. In your example you would need to look for a restaurant full of Brits (or more specifically Brummies) and there are lots of those and not all are balti houses!

Our ride-on mower has caught me out a few times, especially when we first got it. It's a slightly older model (2006-ish) that has the fuel tank mounted under the hood on the engine bay firewall. The gas is gravity fed to the carb and en-route it passes through an in-line fuel filter and an in-line plastic fuel-cock that requires a 90 turn to go from OFF to ON. I would sometimes forget about that fuel-cock and wonder why the starter was spinning the engine like crazy but it wasn't firing only to discover the fuel-cock was still shut! DOH! :(:o

I should have known better, especially as I rode motorcycles for 19 years in the UK (in all weather conditions) and was a motorcycle riding instructor for 14 years and every motorcycle I owned had an in-line fuel cock between the tank and carb(s) that required operation before and after every ride! I blame my forgetfulness on the fact that I haven't ridden/owned a bike since moving to Canada 29 years ago!

I once made the opposite mistake with the mower too, i.e. I forgot to shut off the fuel when putting it away! Thankfully I was working on repairs/maintenance to it when we first got it and went back into the garage the next day and noticed a strong smell of gas. Closer inspection revealed my error and an engine that was 'wet' with gas in multiple places caused by overflow from the carb. As a precaution I decided to pull the spark plug before turning the engine over to see if the plug was 'wet'. It certainly was wet as the cylinder was completely full of gas! I turned the flywheel by hand and pumped the equivalent of a full coffee mug of gas out of the plug hole! I learned a valuable lesson that day and have always remembered to shut off the gas after every use since! :)

Super glue + baking soda..........who knew???

Talking of uses for CA glues here's one used frequently by woodworkers (myself included). If you are using yellow PVA based wood glue the general method of use is to glue both surfaces, align the joint and then clamp for several hours until the glue sets. Sometimes you either can't get clamps in to tight areas or you need to move on quickly to save time and there are a couple of alternatives to this problem. One is to use brad nails from an air-nailer and nail the two pieces together while the glue dries, the other is to use CA glue in combination with the PVA glue to provide instant grip while the PVA glue dries. What you do is lay down alternate areas of glue i.e. a line of PVA then a dot of CA, a line of PVA then a dot of CA, etc. down the length of the joint with the glue one one face of the joint only. Then you spray CA accelerator onto the adjoining face and mate the two faces together with a little pressure. The CA glue will set in seconds and hold the joint firmly while the PVA glue dries. You can them proceed with the next phase of the project.

I have used this trick a lot over the years, mainly on scratch-built plastic models like the poster above but there is another use I have not seen listed yet. Guitarists (and other stringed instrument players) sometimes find that their strings wear the slots in the instrument's nut (the bone or plastic strip the strings go through on the way to the fingerboard) or they want to switch to a lighter gauge string set so the original slots are too wide for the new strings. If you build a dam on either side of the nut with masking tape and then fill each bad slot with baking soda and a single drop of CA glue you can repair the slot and then re-cut it to the required size. I have done this many times to many guitars and never had an issue.

Nature Is This A Hibiscus?

According to the 'Google Lens' app, which I just downloaded and added to my phone for the purpose of trying to find out what flower this is (BTW my wife uses 'Google Lens' to identify all sorts of garden plants and bugs and loves it!), it could very well be a version of Malva Sylvestris or the Common Mallow. It is a naturally occurring wildflower in the UK and many parts of Northern Europe, has been cultivated as a garden plant in many other parts of the world and has become listed as an 'invasive species' in North America due to it's ability to escape from gardens and take over local habitats!

Lots of info on the Wikipedia page for it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malva_sylvestris

A Google image search for 'Common Mallow' gives tons of hits that look a lot like the flower in question too and a general Google search indicates that the Mallow family also includes hollyhock and hibiscus so your initial suspicion looks well founded! :)

Could be worse! The great Terry Pratchett often wrote about a Native American spirit guide whose shortened name was 'One-Man-Bucket'!

Wikipedia explains it as follows:

"One-Man-Bucket will admit that in one respect he was far better off than his brother. In the naming convention of his tribe, he was named after the first thing his mother saw out of the tepee. His name is short for One-Man-Pouring-A-Bucket-Of-Water-Over-Two-Dogs.

His slightly older twin brother's name was conventionally shortened to 'Two-Dogs-F%&#!@&'. Who were emphatically not fighting at the time their mother looked out of the tepee. He'd have given his right arm to have been called Two-Dogs-Fighting!!!"
