It was definitely a real challenge, and was the first time I've gone somewhere with primes exclusively. While I did miss on one or two shots, I found running around with the 21mm kind of liberating and forced me to think about shooting differently. Glad you enjoyed them!

Went to China for two weeks in early August and was one of the few opportunities I got to shoot this year with a bunch of major (positive) changes happening this year. With so many people in the streets I ended up getting better photos of people than I did of the landscapes. I also challenged myself by running a three-prime set, shooting mostly on a 21mm.

PEI photos added per the requests. Hope you guys enjoy!

@magkelly: Oh I know what you mean. Within an hour or two of arriving I was trying to convince the girlfriend to find a way to move there permanently. Its paradise out there.

@normhead: as someone from the prairies and lived on Van-Isle for a few months I can safely say either choice is a good one. You get a different type of beauty on each side but either way its totally worth it!

I've got a very select few, but nothing processed to the point of satisfaction yet. Unfortunately we only got to spend 1.5 days in PEI since the vacation was only a week long and was planned around a friend's wedding. Most of the time I was there I was busy being a beach bum and getting sunburn. May post a few more once I stop being lazy and get them finished up!

Finally managed to process a small collection of photos from my 2012 vacation to the point where I feel like sharing. They're still a ways off but I love how beautiful it is out there.

Hi all,

Took a few shots while I was at the zoo with the gf and a couple of friends a few weeks ago. Looking at the EXIF I forgot to adjust my aperture moving between indoors and outdoors (oops!). Between forgetting to change my aperture and shooting through plexiglass some of the photos look a little flat but I'm glad with how some of them turned out.

I had a DA 35mm f/2.4 backfocus out of the box when I only had my K-x. Sent it in and it works perfectly now on both cameras.

The price seems to be dropping pretty rapidly if Henry's is posting it at $999 now. I spent $1079 not even 2 weeks ago at Saneal to get mine.

Sigma 17-50 or Sigma 17-70

I've currently got the older (2.8-4.5, no HSM/OS) 17-70mm on my K-5 and I have to say its a decent combo, far more balanced than my K-x with similar capability. I will say though that the 2.8 aperture on the lens is limited and I tends to drop off rapidly beyond ~20mm. Just something to keep in mind if you want speed but its a good lens overall.

Time to do the Kit Lens Shuffle.

@Just1MoreDave: Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely have to do that. Even with a shorter zoom I do have a 70-210mm that we can split so it wouldn't be the end of the world, its just a matter of how much she'd be inclined to switch lenses

@EagleFriends: I do actually have the 35mm f/2.4 right now and I love the lens (its my mainstay in my prime kit, extremely small and good for walkarounds in the city). That said, my girlfriend has stated that while she appreciates the smaller size and weight of primes, she'd much rather have convenience as long as she's not dealing with excessively heavy lenses, which is why the Tamron 18-200mm seems attractive (lightweight and full focal length compliment)

@northcoastgreg & CFWhitman: She doesn't appear to be a pixel peeper, yet, so I'm hoping I'm not going to forking out money to get her a DA* 60-260mm anytime soon. that said, if she were to get obsessive with the LBA I'm sure my heart would say yes but my wallet and brain would be yelling out "NO"!

thanks for the reply guys, the swapping thing is true so its something I'll consider. If anything the main limiting factor there is the cost of the K-5 /w 18-135mm kit. compared to the other options.

Hi guys,

So my girlfriend recently came back from a vacation in Europe and noted that she liked how her dad and sister's photos (Nikon D3000 users) came out compared to her little P&S. That said, I figure this is an opportune time to upgrade from my K-x to a K-5 and she's more than happy to oblige me on that. I'm currently using a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-f/4.5 but if I get he K-5 I'll need to either grab a new kit lens for her or for myself. So here's are the options I've figured.

Keep in mind she'll probably only be using this for the occasional hike and vacations, and she likely prefers convenience over absolute photo quality (anything above her P&S is gravy for her).

Get the K-5 with an 18-135mm WR:
PROs: Longer ranger, weather sealing for hikes, quieter AF
CONs: slightly weaker results from the lens compared to 17-70mm, slower maximum aperture, probably most costly option.

Get the K-5, keep the sigma, and get her the Tamron 18-200mm for her:
PROs: The Tamron 18-200mm is only $225 from prodigital2000 right now, gives her the convenience she wants in a single lens thats still lightweight
CONs: much weaker image quality, slow maximum aperture, quality control issues may be difficult to deal with ordering online

Get the K-5, give her the sigma temporarily and use my prime kit until I track down an 18-55mm on the cheap:
PROs: probably better image quality than the 18-200mm, cheaper than other options
CONs: I have to keep my eyes peeled for a deal on the 18-55mm, she may want more range/convenience

Don't get the K-5 at all, keep the K-x and Sigma
PROs: I don't spend any extra money
CONs: I probably don't get to use my camera because my girlfriend will be stealing it regularly.

I've also considered trying to find an older 16-45mm, but the same concerns with the 18-55mm strategy apply.

Any feedback is appreciated guys, love the forums here!

My favorite is dealing with the "serious photographer" hipsters that have been cropping up in my city with armies of Canikon kits. I usually pull the irony card with them and talk about how Canikon is too mainstream and how my main camera is a Holga.

Great shots everyone, loving this thread.

Here's just a few of my favorite shots so far. As a major amateur these are definitely nothing out of the ordinary, just shots of friends usually on hikes or other candids and some landscapes. I suppose the last two are technically cheat shots since they were panoramic stitches. That said, they're images exclusively from my K-x that were stitched together!

DigitalREV's take on the Kr

Normally I don't mind digitalrev videos since they tend to be entertaining. That said I don't think I'd ever actually take any of their reviews seriously.

What I have noticed as of recent though is Kai's undeniable elitism. I mean I know the guy shoots a Leica M8 but I find it difficult to take someone seriously when they pine over the M9-P which is basically a black M-9 with some small tinkers here and there but really did such a poor job reviewing the K-r. I know he doesn't usually give entry level cameras much praise but even then I think he was a little unreasonable (some gripes like the DOF preview button location were absurd. Clearly a different company wouldn't put the buttons in the same place, even Canon and Nikon don't share designs and locations). Even when he reviews the similarly classed D5100 he seems to be nicer about the camera than the K-r.

The second image is pretty telling of a focus issue. I'd get it sent in for service work since my copy of the 35 had a front focussing issue when I first got it. Once its calibrated its a pretty impressive piece of glass for the price.

Ricoh to buy Pentax camera business from Hoya

My concern right now is I hope that Ricoh's purchase doesn't affect Canadian distribution (no GXR availability up here, hope that doesn't mean they'll do the same with Pentax products or I may have to reluctantly change systems).
