That actually looks like something my ex might really like. (Personally, I always liked drop bars and skinny tires, but said ex preferred more upright postures.

Also, Racer, yay for old Ford truck. I always liked mine, which was an 87, extra-cab and short bed. (And 2wd Also kinda stripped down edition, but I added a few things. My customary gauges and a tach and some budget car stereo that actually was pretty nice. Also one of those square-tube aftermarket tailgates cause the original was quite bashed in when we got it. )

One accessory that's really great, btw, (especially if you aren't too tall) and they still make em, is an over -the windshield parcel shelf. (screws into where the visors are attached, has more holes for the visors underneath. I think I got mine from JC Whitney but I saw some on ...maybe Amazon while I was saying similar things to a friend last year. We haven't put one in the S10 yet but may do eventually. :)

Well, that sounds pretty OK, especially if you can make it how you want. I was presuming you might have the problematic VW diesel and hence couldn't pass emissions without detuning the engine horribly. (I think over here that diesel scandal has just about killed passenger car diesels: they kinda couldn't keep up in a heavy modern car, at least, hence the fudging of the tests, no doubt.

That actually sounds... prettty terrible, really. Skodas are just old VW's farmed out, right? Diesels are going to be a bad way to get more horsepower out of a 2.0, but if you're getting those numbers you probably should rev-match carefully and consider a milder tune if you are going through turboes and clutches like that.

Remember, even if your motor is making more power, it doesn't mean anything else in your car is designed for that power. MOT issues in any way are your problem. :)

(Also, 'Estate wagon' and 'Station wagon,' or as we call them in the US, ....a Wagon, come from the same thing. In England, rich people would come down to the train station with a car that could carry their stuff from the *estate,* and in America they'd have one that could take a bunch of stuff from similar places to the *station.* Old coachbuilder terms. :)

I could never afford it anyway, but I tend to agree, ...I'd probably only buy new in order to have them build me one of something exactly how I'd want it. (I think in a lot of cases the colors I'd most want wouldn't tend to come on so many of those with the sportier packages. And most things that still can come with a stick, well, probably those'd tend to come in like red and black mostly. :) )

Generally where they have to wear *burkas* women aren't allowed to drive anyway. But in places like Saudi Arabia and whatnot, big cars have tended to be be favored for a number of reasons, including that half the family has to use *drivers.*

Makes some sense, if you're new to a country, what cops drive (and have serviced) may seem like a pretty safe choice.

And various makes and models can get good reputations or followings among any different groups and kinds of groups. (Hec, we've often enough commented on a certain Subaru following even here among Pentaxians. :) )

My circles of punk rock-affiliated friends had a lot of early 80's Toyotas, mostly Corolla hatches, just cause they were pretty cheap, available, some fun and pretty reliable. I dunno how many of those clutches we changed in those. :)

They are kinda cute, like American-sized kei cars or something. :)

(also cause you and some other Film board regulars are here, were you that posted little plans/measurements to make an LX finger-grip? I was on the 'latest acquisition' board chattering about my 'new' Fuji X20, which is here, and the subject came up there. :)

I think somewhere way back on the Film board there's a little guide to making your own. I forget who posted it. I can't remember if they need a little keyhole-slotted piece or if it's just a couple of screws but I think once upon a time Pentax would sell you a kit with a blank grip you could sculpt to whatever shape you want.

Looks like it's probably 120, possibly 620. If you show us the end of the supplied spool, it should be obvious. (The 620 spindle slots are narrower than 120. But you can if necessary respool 120 film onto them, it's just Kodak decided to get unneccesarily-proprietary at some point, (I forget when) as they often did, with a perfectly good film standard. :) )

Yeah, they do seem worth the extra money, not that I had that much anyway, but in this case the need really is for a more pocket-sized camera with a finder I can use in the bright, rather than 'Best pseudo-rangefinder I can get' anyway, so if I think of this as much more capable than many pocket camera options rather than like a lesser x100, I don't feel deprived. :)

Also I did a bit of casual shooting last night at the pub: I think I'll pretty much get along with this little guy just fine. The OVF with the information overlay is really working for my eyesight issues.

Yeah, I can tell the bigger sensor would be a lot nicer for the often-low-lightey shooting I like to do, but something like the x100 series is probably a bit over the line as far as stretching the 'pocket camera I can work with' parameter goes. Also I think they still cost more than I could get like a K-5II or something for and just do the one-lens-carry option if I have to sling something on a strap all the time anyway. :) I do think the bigger ones are just that cool, though.

And, well, maybe I'll see if people still seem so crabby about getting real cameras pointed at them as they used to around here. Which is silly, cause there's like two cameras on every damn smartphone and all these days. This will definitely work much better for me than borrowed smartphone cameras, which are just embarrassing by the time I try to see the screens and get them to focus where I want and trigger at a good time and all those little things you get with, say, a real shutter release and all. :)

OK, Eddie, apart from not getting much photo done, between eyes and a period of time without a reliable computer to do photo with, and a lot more physically to do, which is generally good, if also often in the way of slinging cameras. (But that's why I got the little metal compact and optical finder and all. :) ) I've been a bit lurkey and sometimes chatting on car threads. But busier is happier for me than being kinda stuck in a chair most of the day. :)

Hey! Maybe nothing incredibly special, but I'm happy with having scraped up for a used Fuji X20 for my pocket, (well, any large pockets, but I wear a lot of those.)

I'm hoping to really start shooting again after a period of a lot of back pain and eyesight/migraine trouble really blunting my enthusiasm, (Also the fact that most of the rest of what I do can't really be done slinging a full-sized camera kit, but I'm kinda hoping to also use this to get myself back into film. ) I'm already loving the optical finder: it shows information and focus targeting, and some idea of framing, but works for me even if I'm too dayblind to read one of those darn screens or have been wearing my reading glasses too much.

Even got a black one, which doesn't really matter much, but when I was a young photog gal, having a lot of 'chrome' bodies had annoying status implications I coulda done without, even if they're seen as kinda special and old-school now. :) Also got the OEM slotted lens hood: I'm surprised the slots aren't anywhere near as helpfully-shaped as they should be, but I may consider putting it on the drill press if I can set up a jig and bit I can be confident about. :)

Anyway, I should be popping up on the compact cameras board again, soon. Especially cause I didn't get a manual. :)

It's kinda like what's wrong with a moving part, though? "OK, now I gotta roll up the windows and turn the stereo down to ...tell the stereo to turn down, then interrupt the music saying, 'OK reducing volume,' " Computers just seem to mostly end up just involving you in computers so someone doesn't have to make a knob or a switch. :)

I just don't care for excessive automation, myself. I've generally thought one of those 'auto-stick' or flappy paddles would make a nice compromise with my arthritis, compared to something almost totally out of your hands except for the kickdown and all. I've yet to drive any of those but a kind of embryonic one in a rental Eclipse that I could swear wasn't set up for the extra weight of the ragtop. It was kind of more like a suggestion box than manual control, but even so, kinda better than just sticking it in D when I played around. :) I presume they've gotten better, though. Right now I seem to be doing enough better with the joints in some ways I just want three pedals again, but one of those that works nicer would actually make a certain amount of sense for me. It does seem the good clutches for years had only been coming on things that are more powerful than I need them to be or can expect to afford even when they're twenty years old, though, so who knows. :)

I'm even less sure about all these dials and menus as in, pretty much don't want. Not to control the car, anyway. Even the stereo, probably, give me a knob or at least a button I can find with my hand and turn without looking at it. :)

I basically always have the rear seats folded in da Ratmobile, just cause I almost never have passengers back there to need to raise them, ever, except to air them out a bit after a rainy season once in a while. :)

The way those rear seats fold forward means I kind of intend to cut out most of the padding from the seat bottom on one side, and make a hollow seat base with plywood and keep some tools in there under a flap. I kinda just haven't found a toolbox/kit I like for the purpose yet. :)

The seat-backs fold forward, often on a bit of an angle. (Also, often, when those were built, all the dudes weren't six feet tall or more so those are probably set pretty far back in the photo. :) Proportionately, that looks like a really long reach to the steering wheel, and I'm like 5'6. )

I'm actually really mad at Jaguar for corrupting that term right when Americans were starting to learn what it really means. :)




Hee. Well, in this case it wasn't anything to do with regulations, just streamlining the marketing, profit margins or something. It's the same car as you could get with a stick for like a decade, they just added side-impact bars, really, and the overseas ones with the stick weren't any different from those that way, either. They were trying to soccer-mom-ify everything too much, too. (maybe while underestimating actual soccer moms in the process, probably definitely and foolishly forgetting the fact that people bought Volvos in America to *not* be like stereotypical American car drivers,) ...They even took a little frame stiffening out to cushy-up the ride, (Which I could conveniently replace with an aftermarket IPD piece rather cheaply, made a huge difference, though.)


Also, big news, I've finally scraped up enough for a used Fuji X20, so I expect actual photography to feature more in my life a while. I haven't been able to lug kit around with most of what else I do for a while, but this little thing should actually be with me more. And hopefully AF for me well when eyesight's sucking. :)

Groovy. I'd love a '56 Nomad, (Or more likely the Tradesman version, cause Nomads are crazy expensive) pastel two-tone, and with more sensible/old school wheels. You know, maybe 17's or whatever adds up to not-too-ribboney-thin in the tires. :)

Or I'd actually probably more love a pretty *small* shooting brake, right now. I keep wanting for a project something to deal with my serious jones for three pedals again, so a more reasonable hope might be like a 70's or 80's hatchback. These guys just featured one I used to *have,* same color, even and what I'd probably do with it to start, today, even. Happen to have the link handy. :)

Manufacturers should shooting-brake all the things. Or at least credibly-hatchback them. Even an all out wagon could have coupe doors, maybe a small half-suicide door if I really need to lean in there. :)

Housemate totally thinks four passenger doors are more practical. I'm like, "I want at least my driver's door to be coupe style. Then I don't have to do the door-dance every time I put a handbag or cameras or tools behind my seat, just open one door, baddabing."

Also, I drive a Volvo wagon, as many know, cause RWD and wagon. They seem to be making new like V or XC60 'crossovers' that could be closer to what I think the idea should be. "Instead of trying to make a tolerable SUV (but too small for most SUV bigness purposes, as opposed to where small SUVs are good by being really offroadey,) that can be *lowered* to be more tolerable, why not just make a *wagon* that can *raise* itself once in a while?

Also, I'm with the stick-preference crowd, but self-fulfillingly so many companies have just said "Americans don't buy standard transmissions," and then prove it by making them *unavailable in the US.* Even my Ratmobile wasn't available with a stick in the US in the early-nineties year she is, but they were still made overseas and you could have them in the near-identical other model ranges from not long before. Anyway, I didn't have much to pick from used, though, cause despite the South's self-image... not so much big on the shifting for themselves in the first place, most folks here. :)

Yes and no: the skills aren't always there, but sometimes skills wouldn't help you much unless you use them to 'not drive where they haven't treated the roads.' It's a combination that usually keeps *me* off the roads on the occasions where there actually is snow, as much as I'd like to have some fun with my Volvo out there in it. Can't count on anyone else down here though, is usually the kicker, ...in the new digs, we probably will have to rely on the four wheel drive, anyway. (Which could really use some narrower winter rims for snows: this little guy's more set up for *mud,* which is a more common issue here. )

Yeah, the V90 was actually the same car as like a 960 until they went front-wheel drive I guess. The independent rear suspension was an option even on the 940 series at least, but it doesn't seem to be a common one, at least among survivors. (I suppose they may get lower with time that way, they would come with nice Nivomat shocks, anyway, I don't know how many aftermarket choices there even are for replacement, since I don't have that setup,

The current Ratmobile's actually got a V90's airfoil on the back. (I was kinda hoping to get a little extra shade out of that, but it's not much help there apart from one parking space on a steep drive I was using at a time, where it did..., a little. It was kind of a cosmetic upgrade/perhaps marginal bump to clean aerodynamics, mostly seems to mean I use rear wiper more.

I've been pretty impressed even with my live axle and no lows. .You know, for a work wagon with a few suspension and frame support mods. :)

Hrm, well, that sometimes varies by color, or maybe if 4wd's came from a different paint shop, but I can also see 4wd's getting more little bits of damage to start peeling just cause of how they may be used. Pays to protect the paint this far South, though, clearly. I've been kinda field-testing various products to that end. Especially all the darn headlight and taillight fogging. Don't have too much definitive yet. Of old standbys the NuFinish stuff in the orange bottle holds up pretty good in this sun, the bog-standard Turtlewax paste wax is not up to it. quality seems to go up from there pricewise in general. There's some interesting spray-on headlight coatings that may not really hold up so well either but don't seem to be doing any harm.

Since it's a Jeep, if you incur any paint damage in later years, you can always get creative with color schemes and finishes without em looking wrong, anyway. :)

Speaking of Caterham/Lotus Sevens, they can look pretty OK with a combination of BRG and some aluminum showing, say, on the bonnet, etc. I bet a combination job like that could look kind of nice, but maybe do something like color along the top of the vehicle or wide stripes, leave enough aluminum showing to really set itself off against that. :)

What you like's what you like. :) Those Liberties seem pretty cute, though. I was seeing a number of listings for em when we were 4WD-shopping. (Didn't get down to checking any of em out cause an open-bed-truck was much-preferred for various pickup-truck-type reasons, but there was something of a drought around our price-range there. Which is kind of ironic since of course there were *plenty* of 2wd Cherokees and trucks and the like, which was the opposite of the case when I was vehicle-shopping for myself and kind of expecting to end up in something like that. (Lucked into a Volvo wagon though, so that was all good.) We needed a 4wd, though? All of a sudden all these lovely 2wd trucks and Cherokees out there. :)

Hee, when I was a much littler car-nut we knew the local Lotus Seven kit importer, who gave me all kinds of brochures and swag and photos of them. I was of course all for building one. :)
