The only response I've received was they would start shipping the end of the month (February). When they start to ship out, I'm suppose to get an email that mine is ready.

It's getting near the end of the month...

Pentax SMC FA 35-80mm:mechanical problem?

I had to pull out my 35-80 to check. Mine is the same way yours is, just a bit tougher at .43 and only at 50mm. It acts like a lens going into “macro” mode.

I’ve used mine this way for many years on all of my film and digital cameras with no issues. This seems as though it’s just the way this lens is.

Maybe someone else has more insight?

DA* 55 1.4 SDM Problem

I bought mine in 2010, so an original run.

Iíve been told by several people, including my camera repair man, that there were some changes made to the replacement motors for the lenses that had the highest failure rate. That being said, I have nothing to back that statement.

=Off Subject =
My repair man shoots Nikon, but loves to play with my Pentax equipment. He told me if the wife would allow him to, heíd buy a Pentax kit (other than his Spotmatic) to go with his Nikon.

DA* 55 1.4 SDM Problem

I have 3 of the older SDM lenses also. The DA17-70, which has never faltered regardless how long it sits; the DA*200 which has also never given me a problem; and the DA*50-135 which needs waking up before use. With my 50-135, I’ve noticed that manually focusing the lens doesn’t help to wake it, I just have to work with the auto focus button a few seconds before it will respond. I bought the lens second hand here knowing this a couple of years ago, and it hasn’t changed.

Iíve seen them list cameras that way several times. I bought a nice MZ-5 for pennies because they mis-labeled it. But I agree, that kind of money is a gamble if it doesnít work.

Sigma 35 1.4 Art, Sigma 17-50 for portraiture

The 17-50 is a good to great “all around” lens that is usually plenty fast enough. I rarely hear anyone really complain about that lens.

I’ve passed on the Art lenses because of the focus issues. That and I have the FA31, which is a stellar lens in its focal length. If you’re looking to spend money, any of those 30ish primes will please you. Otherwise, the 17-50 is more than adequate.

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

My usage is similar to monochrome. I bought the K-1 to use with my 3 FA Limiteds and a plethora of vintage glass. I have more modern offerings which are for my KP, previously K3. My long lenses are the DA*200, SMC K 300 and Vivitar Series 1 70-200 (1st version).

Meyer-Optik Gorlitz 50/2.8 Domiplan

I picked this lens up cheap because the seller said the aperture didn't work, but the glass was clean. When I received the lens, the glass is pristine, but there aren't any aperture blades inside the lens to work... But it makes for some nice wide open shots!

I agree. For image quality and high ISO, the KP is a killer camera. Itís going to take something I really want in a camera to make me want to upgrade in the next two years.

I believe we will continue to see a drop in sales. I've gone from a K10D - K20D - K5 - K3 - K-1 - KP. Most of those purchases were business driven for me but the image quality from any of them was always good enough. With the K-1 and KP now, I really don't see a big need to purchase another camera anytime soon. (maybe if they come out with a KP type camera with GPS). Lenses I buy as I see a need for them. And I am also an atypical purchaser with the means to buy new equipment.

I always wondered how long the sales volume would continue, now it's who is in a position to survive a drop.

Welcome to the forum from another in Florida!

I also use a lot of old lenses, which was part of the reason I went from film to Pentax digital many years ago.

I am also very much in this camp. For many years my widest lens was a 28mm on 35mm film, and it was rarely used. Anything between 50mm and 135mm was the norm for me. Recently I've begun to work more with wide angle, but still find myself moving in closer to make something "stand out".

An Enthusiast Mirrorless

I’ve never understood the desire some have for Pentax to build a mirror less camera. You’re not going to have a camera much smaller than the KP (which people complain about being too small) and if you did, the professional lenses defeat the size advantage. And then if you want smaller, you’re going to need a new mount, which everyone will want a fully functioning K mount adapter for so they can use their existing lenses instead of buying the newly created ones.

There are other areas I’d rather see R&D money spent than on a mirror less market gamble.

And seriously, if you need professional video, buy a camera with that capability at the foremost. A stills camera will always be better at stills than video.

For me it’s always been focus on my subject, then compose the shot. Somewhere in there I’ll decide what and how much should be in focus. As far as the rule of thirds... I will compose my shot by what I “feel” I want the ahot to be/encompass, and at times I’ll take a second shot composed by the rule of thirds. This may or may not give me a better shot, but it became something I practiced when I was being paid for my work.

I think at some point in the very near future, they will have to go to a newer processor. Whether or not that enables 4K video, I could care less, but I’m just one person and there are many to please. But I see the current processor holding back some advancements.

I had an acquaintance who did something similar to their K5 and had Precision do the repair. So I know they are able to, the cost though, I have no idea.

Good luck!
