KP for landscape, long term usability, and good lens

Megapixelmk, thank you so much!
Are you referencing this lens: Pentax SMCP-DA 16-45mm f/4.0 ED AL A?
(I googled for the range and that came up)
Thank you, again!
Annie

Yes that's the one Annie. Although older, it's a favorite of users on this site and very light. And it can be picked up used for very little outlay.
Given landscape photography is what you enjoy (like me) I am personally a big fan of zoom lens starting at 16mm. It's equivalent to 24mm full frame and that's a sweet spot for landscape for me. I've never been a fan of the 18-55 or 20-40mm for that reason. The extra few millimeters make a big difference!
Also to be recommended if you want to go down the ultra wide route is the 12-24mm. Look up the reviews by users. It is truly value for money.
I also agree with the previous sentiment : Pixel peeping is a modern day curse and too much of it occupies the minds of too many photographers. Instead, stand back and enjoy your work as a whole. 😉

You can't go wrong with the KP, and pixel peeping (since you are into that) will not disappoint. Also it is built tough. Mine has endured a few dunks and spills in a river as well as the odd knock, and keeps on regardless. I haven't owned the 16-50mm so I can't comment on it, but I do recommend the 16-85mm, especially at the wide end. I also loved the older 16-45mm, and achieved some of my best images with it.
Regarding shooting jpegs there are a multitude of custom settings where you can fine tune your jpegs to your own tastes... just experiment with them.
The KP in my opinion is one the best crop sensor dslrs out there. I don't think you will regret it.

Live composite

I havent used it for fireworks but I guess you wouldnt need need very long exposure times due to the frequency of fireworks, or for that matter many composite images, as the final image would become very cluttered. Re your second point, as I understand the composite modes, the "bright" setting only adds additional bright pixels in each subsequent image. If you change the composite mode to "Additive" you can get over-exposure.

Its been a while since I have used it (on my previous K3) but I remember you have the option of saving all the images during the process, which is great if you dont like your final composite image, but prefer one half way through the process

Taking a step further - new lenses or upgrade body (K-x)?

Answer to the first question: Yes the K-x is dated if you compare it to subsequent Pentax models and there are certainly better quality lenses than your current line up.
But in my opinion concentrating on skills like composition and challenging yourself all the time will help you improve far more than new equipment.
I have always maintained one can get great shots from most modern cameras these days if you understand the basics about speed, aperture and ISO. Even without that, shooting in program mode you can achieve fine results by really thinking about what you want to achieve.
Shoot every day, study shots from photographers you admire, and learn from the wealth of tips online.
I love my KP with its fantastic features but it doesn't make me a great photographer. Enjoy the journey 😁

Yes it does have something similar. Under Multi exposure, set to Composite mode, and set that to bright. This means it will add only bright pixels to subsequent image.
This is also available in interval composite mode, but you are required to have a minimum of 2 seconds between shots. However you need to pre-determine how many shots you will take, whereas I believe you can stop the process at anytime on the Olympus as you see it unfold live on the screen.
It is a fantastic mode for capturing lightning strikes cumulatively, and of course using the interval mode it's great for star trails.
I think Olympus has done it really well and it is a key feature for their om-d cameras

I agree with many of the posters: 18mm is just not wide enough but the extra 2mm makes a big difference. In fact, as a landscape photographer 16mm is my favorite focal length (on crop cameras)
I have found the 16-85mm a great travel lens, but if finances mean you are unable to hire that, purchase a 16-45mm. Value for money, this was an amazing lens. (I still regret selling it)
The 55-300mm is also a great travel lens too.
Tetons are on my list too, but living down under means alot of saving and planning.
Have a great trip!

Thanks. I found out that there was an issue with my computer that was not applying the discount. Tried the purchase on my wife's computer and all successful. I now have the new version of Nik plus Photolab Essential.
P. S. I really like the new presets in Silver Efex Pro. Don't care much for the new ones in the other apps, but overall I think it has been a worthwhile purchase.

I am trying to purchase Nik Collection 2 at the discounted price of $99US with Photolab essentials edition thrown in. This deal only lasts till June 30. Each time I try on the DXO
website it comes up with the full price (149) and the full price of Photolab. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to enter a code to get the promo price?

Thanks for posting your shots; yes the KP's a great camera and you won't regret it. N.B. the learning curve now begins as the KP has alot of features and unbelievable customization options.
I myself just pulled the trigger on purchasing the battery grip. Because of my shooting style (using live view alot, bracketing and shooting Raw plus) and less battery capacity of the KP, I now can be confident doing a days shoot without changing battery's. I haven't used it yet, but already I love it in the hand and so much more comfortable with larger lens like the 50-135mm. It does add more weight but as a sprightly 60 year old that doesn't bother me! 😊

Congratulations! I own all three of the above...you wont be disappointed! The 55-300 plm is a joy to use (once you get use to pressing the zoom release button each
time). Its compact, quiet, and really quick to focus. The 16-85 is bulkier but is nice and sharp at the wide end. You have ordered a great combo. What I want to know
is will you change your ID to K2 to KP? :)

What's the draw for other cameras?

For me as a landscape photographer that uses ND filters alot, I have long bemoaned Pentax not having the modern ultra wide equivalent to what Canikon users enjoy, that is a 16-35mm lens that takes screw in filters. I am just not drawn to the square filter system that lenses like the Pentax 15-30mm would require, and which are very expensive. This alone makes me think about other brands full frames and I may still leave Pentax because of that reason.
However the divorce would be painful as I just love the image quality, the ergonomics, ruggedness, and interface of Pentax.
I also watch the developments in the mirrorless area as I do like some of the advantages that it brings, including the ability to set your format in the viewfinder eg square, 16:9 etc. Finally the quality of modern evfs of Mirrorless cameras make the switch even more tempting

Haven't pulled the trigger yet but very tempted. Do I make do with extra batteries and wait for K3 successor (which would no doubt be incompatible with the KP grip) or just bite the bullet with a camera that I am largely very happy with?

Do you have a code for the EOFY discount? I'm after a battery grip for my KP. There is currently a ten percent off deal showing on eBay which would bring the dcxperts grip down to just under $300. Is that the EOFY discount you are referring to?

Agreeing with Steve.
Having the slide on cover over the viewfinder while using Live view is absolutely essential to getting accurate exposure with long exposure

I still use and love the Nik Software that I acquired from Google. Because DXO Photolab V2 incorporates the U-Point technology that I think makes the Nik collection unique, I am thinking of purchasing Photolab as a replacement for my aging standalone LR 6. What I want to know from you users of Photolab is does the fact that it has integrated the u-point feature into the main work space make Nik collection less useful? I mainly use it for Silver efex pro and Viveza

When I ordered my KP it only came with the small grip. It was totally inadequate for my hands. So I ordered the large one from CRKennedy and it stays on the camera.
If you do pull the trigger on the KP, you will absolutely need it for the 150-450mm.
Loving my KP and still discovering things about it; it's a great camera. However, if I was considering it now I would hold off because I feel the K3 update must be iniment.

Thanks for your reply and hope you appreciate the spirit it was intended. I appreciate your explanation and am looking again it again in light of it.
I don't necessarily have a keen eye: in fact I instantly felt something didn't work in that top right quarter of the image. However it's only my perception.
Your gallery as a whole is beautiful. Many of the images will look magnificent gracing walls when you eventually get into printing them

I dont know if we are looking at the same image.
Looking at the gallery on my laptop it is the last image in the 6th row. (All rows have 3 images). I'm not talking about footprints. At the top right corner
going down the edge it starts as a dune, then abruptly there appears a glaring whitish line? starting at the edge and pierces into the image towards the left. Directly underneath is a blurry almost rocky image that looks totally out of place. I saw it instantly as a glaring mistake and repeated examination doesnt change my opinion.
However I am interested in other opinions
