Same old feelings

When I see an old movie clip and a camera is displayed there (usually a SLR camera), I wake up. For what camera brand was it? 'Oh yes, it was probably a Nikon F, a Pentax Spotmatic, or ...?' It often arouses the same old interest in photography (as the memory of an old girlfriend when you think of her). How can it be? One might think of the many fine hours one has spent with the camera and the many excellent shots? One might also rejoice in the camera itself, the fine craftsmanship behind its manufacture? And the many fine lenses one might have acquired? You might also be interested in the history of the camera brand? The joy of owning the camera and the many possibilities that come with it are surely shared by everyone who photographs. It is a deep joy! The same interest, however, is not aroused with a camera in a mobile phone. And it probably never will! There is a world of difference between these two types of cameras. Therefore, I welcome the fact that Pentax (through Ricoh) is experiencing what I would call a renaissance. No better and more advanced Pentax cameras and lenses have ever been made than under Ricoh's ownership of the camera brand. It's gratifying!

It's 2020 and my K-3 still rocks

I do not use GPS, WiFi or Video, I'm only interested in the basics - taking pictures - and the Pentax K-3 delivers and has delivered since 2014 - and will hopefully do so for many more years. So for me the Pentax K-3 'still rocks'. A camera that will probably go down in history as a 'classic' (Pentax) camera - a legend in Pentax's long line of quality cameras that are capable of producing high quality photographs.

Reminds me of Frank Hurley (photographer/the Shakleton Endurance Antarctic Expedition 1914-15) and the kind of camera he used during the expedition. Glass plate negatives and a weight of about 10-15 kg. with tripod.

Buying from Japan

Japanese-produced and originating equipment will enter the EU duty free in three years - current duty rate 6.7 %, and after the first year of the EU - Japan Free Trade Agreement 5 % ... and then 0 % after three years. Much photo equipment is currently being produced in China, and Chinese photo equipment is not covered by the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement.

See page 90:

http://trade.ec.europa.eu/doclib/docs/2018/april/tradoc_156786.pdf

So, according to the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Japan the tarifs will be lifted from 6.7 % to 0 % in three years.

Not only the companies will enjoy the benefits of the agreement - the consumers too will enjoy the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Japan!

Potentialy a very good news for photographers in the EU

However, there is one important thing to consider: only Japanese-produced and originating equipment will enter the EU duty free. Much photo equipment is currently being produced in China, and Chinese photo equipment is not covered by the EU-Japan agreement. Chinese goods cannot enjoy the benefits of this agreement. So maybe the Japanese manufacturers will reopen their factories in Japan and produce all their goods in Japan again?

Or perhaps reconsider the model names for FF and APS-C respectively. It could be KF-1, KF-2, KF-3, and so on for FF - and KA-1, KA-2, KA-3 and so on for APS-C ('F' for FF, 'A' for APS-C)? The 'C' for 'Century' perhaps as a 'Special Edition' celebrating the 100th birthday?

I considered the Nikon Df to be my first FF camera, but chose the Pentax K-1. Nikon Df is made of plastic. Plastic with metal plates round the outside of the camera's top, bottom and back (very expensive plastic!). The lens mount is attached to plastic(!) which has caused problems with durability. Pentax K-1 is made of metal - with only a few minor parts made of plastic. I have used Pentax cameras since 1996, and will continue so as long as the quality and price ratio is at the same high level as it is.

From my perspective, let's get some more 'mistakes'. K-1 is a fantastic machine without comparison. The only mistake here is perhaps this video, filled with mistakes. Ricoh/Pentax please make some more 'mistakes'.

To what extent is there an issue with field curvature, also known as “curvature of field”?
This is a common optical problem that causes a flat object to appear sharp only in a certain parts of the frame (the SMC DA 15 Limited is only sharp in the middle of the frame), instead of being uniformly sharp across the frame.
This is due to the curved nature of optical elements, which project the image in a curved manner, rather than flat. As all digital camera sensors are flat, they cannot capture the entire image in perfect focus.
Thanks!

I have the SMC DA 10-17mm - Excellent!

Not yet confirmed: a quantum camera that allows one to photograph events that happened yesterday and many years ago by taking advantage of quantum mechanics in the sense as Bohr and Heisenberg expressed: quantum mechanics could act as an excellent (photographic) tool in physical calculations and experiments. And it could, and it still can, and more excellent than ever with the new Pentax Quantum FF. But as I said it is not yet confirmed! But it would be an excellent tool for time travelling, I think.

New K-3 firmware has a bug
Posted By Time Traveller

It should be a natural thing to recognize that there is a problem with update 1.20. But Pentax/Ricoh has not done that yet! That would be to show respect for the many thousands of Pentax users worldwide who have updated their K-3 with update 1.20 and now have a defective camera. Instead of openness about this issue we are being met with silence. Furthermore, Pentax/Ricoh has not closed down access to update 1.20! Why? We are not accustomed to such arrogance in this part of the world. It does not serve to Pentax/Ricoh's advantage.
The only thing Pentax/Ricoh need to do to reassure us, is sending out a message that the problem is recognized, and that work is being done to correct or eliminate the bug.

In 'normal display' the screen turns off when focusing - and when the screen is turned off it turns on when focusing. I allways use the camera with a turned off screen, so I don't know if it is to turn off in 'normal mode'. Perhaps somebody else knows?
Best regards

Same problem here. I have updated three K-3s, and they all have the same bug that turns the LCD screen on (dark blue) when focusing. The question now is whether the bug has an influence on other camera functions. I've taken a number of images with one of the cameras, and it seems to work flawlessly. But I can't be sure it does. Pentax/Ricoh has now got themselves a big problem. Apart from an issue with quality control confidence in the company will probably be weakened. If they want to avoid an escape away from the brand, they must immediately tell Pentax K-3 worldwide users how and when the problem will be solved. :)

A name for the FF Pentax. Any Suggestions?

What is an appropriate name for the new FF Pentax? And does it matter? I think the name of a camera means quite a lot to the owner! Some letters have a bad sound in European ears. For example, the letter Z in connection with the well-known Pentax letter K - KZ. This letter (Z) generally has a bad reputation in the composition ZZ. For historical reasons (1933-1945). I am very happy for the letters K and M, and if I was to suggest a name for the new and long-awaited FF Pentax, it could be K-15 (' 15 ' for the year of its release). I could also imagine something more original with only a number: "No. 1" - simply! Any suggestions or comments? Does the name of a camera means anything?
