Pentax K-3 body $996 - (Mod Note: Read comments before jumping on this!)

I sent a message to the seller asking if it came with a warranty and the reply I received was

"Our products are covered by a warranty of 1 years parts and 90 days for labor. Due to our very low prices, we are prevented from listing our items with manufacturer warranty."

I'm still confused as to whether the warranty is provided directly through them (not through Ricoh/Pentax), or if it does have a Pentax warranty and they are just not allowed to mention that in the listing (which would make absolutely no sense to me for it to have a Ricoh/Pentax warranty yet not be allowed to tell you that.

Do B&H / Adorama drop prices on most items on Black Friday?

Well, after about 3 days of deliberating whether or not to finally pull the trigger on the DA* 60-250 (a lens I've wanted for about 6 years) I finally went back to the B&H site just now to place my order... only to be greeted by a message stating that online ordering will be unavailable until about 6PM EST on Saturday. What gives? How do you have a sale that's supposed to run from around Thurs. until Monday and then just shut down online ordering on Black Friday?

The K5 doesn't, nor has it ever cost less than the D7000. From the get-go I've always seen the D7000 sell for a few hundred less than the K5. That's the main reason I only just recently bought one.

Looking forward to getting my K-5... ordered it early this morning from B&H and it might be delivered as early as tomorrow. :o) It will be taking the place of my K-10D, which has and continues to serve me flawlessly, but I figured it was finally the time to make the upgrade.

Tuesday: K-5 $999 at B&H, Monday $999 at Adorama

I was thinking of finally upgrading from my K-10D upon hearing of this deal, so I went to Amazon just now to check the price. It is currently $1,199.00 on Amazon, not $995, even though it says the order would be fulfilled by Abe's of Main. So then I checked out both the Adorama and Abe's of Main web-sites and they both had the camera body for $999... but they are both based here in Jersey and subsequently charge NJ sales tax, which adds $70 to the price. Then I checked out eBay and the stores on eBay which are selling this camera for $999 are ALSO located in NJ... and they too subsequently charge sales tax. I was all ready to finally pull the trigger and buy the K-5... but I refuse to pay sales tax on Internet purchases. The only option left, in which I could still get the camera body for under a grand, is to go with Prodigital 2000's eBay store, which I've heard good things about. The only thing with that is that it ships from all the way up in Canada.

In the end, stupid sales-tax policies (which aren't the sellers' faults at all, I know, but which are instead the fault of greedy gov't.) may keep me from pumping $1,000 into this crumbling economy. Way to go, Congress.

UPDATE: B&H Photo has finally followed suit and lowered their price on the K-5 to match Adorama and Abe's... and the best part is... NO sales tax for me. :) So, I will order the K-5 and take what I save in the form of sales tax and apply that savings toward half the cost of the Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL lens I've also had my eye on for a while. :o) I feel sorta' guilty spending the money when my K-10D still works flawlessly, but it's been a long couple of past few years on the employment/unemployment front and I'm trying to convince myself that I deserve it! LOL!

K-5 on sale at B&H for $1,485

I have a K10D and have been seriously itching for an upgrade, having made the decision to bypass the K20D, and the K7.... but what got me into Pentax in the first place was more bang for the buck. Unfortunately, I'm now going on a year and a half of being unemployed with nothing but "sorry, the position has been filled" replies showing up in my inbox every day, so buying a K5 isn't in my immediate future no matter what price it sells for. But, even if I had found a new job I could not personally justify swallowing the current price. It's just way too out of line with the original Pentax philosophy which had made me chose Pentax over Canikon in the first place.

I'd love to see the body drop to the sub-$1,000 range, although I imagine it would be a least a year from now (maybe by Christmas 2011) before that happens.

K-5 on sale at B&H for $1,485

I just checked and B&H is currently asking $1,599 for the body, only. Meanwhile, they're selling the Nikon D7000 for $1,199.95. Even at $1,485 for a K-5 body the price difference is still substantial for what are essentially the same specs. Sorry, but it's going to take a hell of a lot more than $114 savings for me to see the K-5 as reasonably priced. Even if I had the money I wouldn't pay $1,485 for it... I would just continue to wait it out until the price came down to at least D-7000 level. The K-5 is a fine camera, but Pentax shouldn't be pricing it like a Lexus when it's more like a Solara.

I think the picture is quite impressive! One question though (and forgive me if it may seem stupid to some... I've never actually done anything with star trails before)... you mentioned using Bulb mode and an exposure time of 1hr 45 minutes. How did you manage to keep the shutter depressed for so long? Did you use a remote cable release and a piece of tape wrapped around it to keep the button depressed?

I've never had the opportunity to hold a K-7, or a K-5 (since stores don't sell them anywhere near me), but I personally feel that the K10D isn't really all that comfortable to hold unless it has the battery grip mounted. Even without ever having felt a K-7/K-5 in my hands I'm pretty sure I'd opt for a smaller and lighter camera with a battery grip than something like a K30. By the way, I have small hands, but long-ish fingers.

It's also not uncommon for manufacturers to switch memory suppliers whilst in the middle of production (like say switching from Hynix memory to Samsung memory). Each manufacturer's chips may follow the same memory standard and contain the same rated capacity, but one vendor's memory chips can be faster than the others (gold-plated leads instead of silver, smaller nanometer manufacturing process, increased heat dissipation, etc.)

In either case built-in flash memory is almost always soldered directly to the mainboard to reduce latency. There could be additional spaces for memory on the board, but it wouldn't be as simple as just plugging another chip into the mainboard to increase performance, the memory would have to be soldered in and the firmware would have to be told to look for memory in that location.

It's possible, if the K-5 uses the same speed grade of memory as my 4 year old K10D, which could shoot at about 3FPS until the card was full. Using the same speed of memory to move larger-size files could explain the low 1.6FPS.

It really has nothing to do with software, or firmware. Memory is memory. When you tell your camera to format a card it formats all available physical memory and any and all sectors not reported back as "bad" during the format should be utilized. Now, the camera software may tell the camera to limit the camera to let's say 7 shots whether the memory is actually filled, or not... I suppose that is possible... but I have no reason to see why they would purposely make the camera use substantially less buffer space than is available within the embedded flash circuitry.

Having said that (and as I have mentioned before on this forum) it boggles my mind why the RAW shooting buffer capacity is so low. Memory density and speed have increased dramatically since my own camera, the K10D, came out. We used to have RAMBUS, SDRAM, then DDR, then DDR2, and now DDR3. Each standard has brought with it higher memory density per square inch and increased throughput. If a typical RAW file from say a K-5 is (maybe) 30MB and you can squeeze off about 7 shots before the buffer is apparently filled that means a little over 200MB of internal flash is being utilized, plus the additional overhead space required for the file-system used by the flash memory for organization. So, it's likely they are using a very inexpensive 256MB flash chip on the main board and that is a paltry amount of memory these days to use in embedded circuitry. Even cell phones these days have up to 8GB or more of built-in flash memory integrated directly onto the board.

There are other things which could be limiting the buffer aside from the built-in flash, such as the bus (pipeline) between the built-in flash and the actual memory card slot. Either way, I think the burst rate is most certainly a hardware limitation and would not likely be affected by any software or firmware updates, unless such updates used a newer, more efficient compression algorithm to make the file sizes smaller and allow more shots into the buffer at a time. Of course, RAW doesn't use compression in the first place, so there's really no way to do that.

Glad to hear that Pentax seems to be getting it's "auto-focus act" together. I only own a K10D thus far and yesterday I ventured out with an urban exploration group up into an abandoned high-rise factory. I had my DA* 16-50 mounted on it as it was quite dark in places while inside. While shooting out through some of the glass-less window panes out toward the city of Philadelphia (with PLENTY of available light outside the window) my K10D and DA* 16-50 STILL couldn't lock focus on some of the shots while in AF-S and center-focus modes! COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I was not shooting in a dark room without a flash... I was shooting out a window into bright light and a vast city-scape with lots of available light and the camera just couldn't lock center focus. My focus point was one of the clearly visible tall buildings. I've frequently noticed such POOR auto-focusing to be the case with the K10D and in many cases I end up having to switch it to manual focus in order to get the shutter to trip. I guess I will have to go back into the menu and see if I can set it back to releasing the shutter whether the focus has been achieved, or not (but weirdly-enough, the focus seems pretty good, it's just that the camera doesn't know it).

I still use a K10D, which can shoot at maximum burst (3FPS) until you finally run out of room on the memory card. Every time I read how the "newer" cameras can only shoot for 2-3 second bursts before the buffer gets filled I can't help but wonder what the hell they did to the buffer on the newer cameras. It's not like the new cameras are shooting 24MP files, for crying out loud.

60.5 megapixel captures, Flash syncronization up to 1/1600s... all for a modest $17,000 to $37,000. I truly do wonder who exactly can afford to buy such expensive cameras and whether or not the improvement in the pictures they take is really worth them costing 20X as much as other Pro-bodies.

Pentax bodies' lens-changing ergonomics. Clearly superior?

I agree. I had thought that all camera brands had their lens release on the right side of the body where you could reach it with finger, or pinky while still maintaining a solid grip on the camera. And then one night a friend of mine asked me to take a few pictures of her singing with her band while they were playing a local gig. She has a Nikon D40x, which has the lens disengage button on the left side of the body, not the right. I also believe the lens had to be rotated in the opposite direction in order to disengage it. It took me a while to figure out how to disengage and remove the lens for the first time and I remember that the process of doing so did not feel nearly as secure as it does when doing it to my K10D. Maybe it's something you just eventually get used to, but regardless, it did not feel to me to be a good way to have to disengage a lens.

I sort of think the K-7 could drop as low as $600 in the coming year, or two. When I bought my K10D the body was only about $550 brand-new, with warranty The original selling price of the K10 wasn't all that different from the original selling price of the K7, was it?

Sad, just sad. I've posted my observations in previous weeks in a different thread, but it seems that Pentax has no real interest in (at least) the U.S. market, in general. They don't even really try to advertise here in the states, aside from the occasional page in magazines like Popular Photography. No television advertising, whatsoever... and while stores like Target online and Walmart online sell a couple of Pentax products you can't find them in any of the stores.

I find myself in constant conflict, as half of me knows that Pentax has basically abandoned the U.S. market and I am constantly questioning whether or not I want to continue to support a brand which does not support us. Everyone else I know has a Nikon, or a Canon. I get tired of trying to defend the Pentax brand, especially in light of the fact that they have raised prices so furiously in the past few years.

Products like the K-5 make me think that maybe I can hang in a little longer, but seriously, this whole thing is getting really old. You could make a Pentax commercial for broadcast on U.S. stations in which a Storm Trooper walks around with a white K-x grabbing photos for the Rebel Alliance and I bet that would put the name "Pentax" in the heads of a lot of people, but it's like the company just does not care. I'm not saying that particular commercial would be especially cheap to produce due to royalties, but at least make SOME effort to actually sell the products you manufacture!

Ultra Wide Angle Zooms

Well, for me the choice was easy. I wanted an ultra wide perspective, but did not want a fish-eye. So, I got the Sigma 8-16mm, as the widest non-fisheye lens currently available. The way I see it, if you're going to spend a ton of money on a wide-angle it should be the widest one available. The reviews I'd read of the lens were favorable-enough, so that sealed the decision for me. You have to be careful when there are people on either edge of the frame, as it will stretch them out, but this is a natural, physical property of having such a wide field of view and with practice and care it should not post a problem whilst still allowing for one heck of a wide field of view.

Actually, a commercial like that, were it ever to happen, would certainly put the Pentax brand name in a lot of heads within a short period of time. Han Solo dressed up like a Storm Trooper, using a white and black K-x to gather clues for the resistance... the techies would just eat that stuff up. Even if there were royalties involved I bet sales would be decent. Look at Verizon, they just introduced a limited edition R2-D2 version of the Motorola Droid 2 and it generated a lot of buzz.
