For what its worth...
Lens in "Auto" position? Check and clean contacts on lens and camera? Worse case could be SDM failure...a rarity for the 60-250 lens. Ability to test lens on another Pentax camera body?
Hope it is only something simple...

What size and type of frame for 13 x 19 photo?

Consider using a 18x24 frame with a 2 1/2" mat border. This frame is generally available in most hobby/art stores. Or a straight 13x19 frame, which is a bit hard to find. Also, experiment with different size matting border and by trying offsetting the mat cut out.

"Shooting" hummingbirds - hints/recommendations?

Hummers arrive/depart almost to the day for past 10+ years...keeping a diary helps. Rufus, Black Chin, Ruby Throated, and Puff Belly Hummers are our most popular. We have multiple hanging and a couple of window feeders...(4 parts boiled water to 1 part sugar...NO red dye needed please). No need for extra coverage with flower baskets or such. Never seen them attacked by other birds of prey. I usually shoot hand held and have most success in early morning and later evening when they are most active. I use DFA100mm and DA300mm on K5iis and K3...normally shooting between 250-500/sec. I wish you and others much success...Hummers are so enjoyable.

Check all contacts on the lens. Are they clean, raised, and undamaged in comparison to your 16-50? Do you have "Auto" focus selected on the lens? Otherwise, suspect you may have a bad lens that is damaged before or during shipment. Hope it is a simple fix.

Along with what has been mentioned, consider using a tripod (or other type of stabilization), with shake reduction off, and the 2 sec shutter delay with a cable or remote release. This allows the mirror to clear and most vibrations to settle. I also use defused flash and/or reflective screens to fill/add light on subject. Enjoy!

Trying to decide on a film SLR

My choice...K1000.
I have both since the 70's, still use and love them. The K1000 is all mechanical with 1 battery powered light meter. An awesome foundation to any photographer, as you need to set aperature, shutter speed, and focus.
The ME is a bit smaller and lighter, and requires 2 batteries to operate. You have less control in the sense you can only control shutter speed by aperature adjustment. You also can select 100x (flash setting) or bulb for shutter control. Seems counter failure is common with ME, but I count my shots or put tick marks on film label. This was my goto when flying and it certainly took a beating and keeps on ticking.
You found a good deal with both and will enjoy either one.

Pelican cases!!!
1550 is the largest to carry on an airliner, that or anything smaller will work. Make sure that you get the cubed cutaway foam inside to customize your setup. Take the time to lay out your equipment, as you would want them in a case, measure it out and then add at least a couple inches to each side. You will hopefully find a case that will work. I have two of the 1550s and am extremely pleased with their outstanding construction, durability, and, most of all, protection. B&H, Adorama, or local camera store should have these in stock.
Wish you well in your search and acquiring your case.

Consider carrying an extra SD card. You would be surprised how quickly you can fill up your card, especially if you shoot RAW or RAW+. Also, consider shooting some burst series, might catch that magic photo or two. It is alright to be a bit nervous, but as you said, you've done this before, you have a have fun and enjoy!

Adam, would appreciate a reattack on this earlier posted question...

Will Pentax/Ricoh renew/release "past" camera accessories?
Examples are...extension tubes, split image focusing screens, macro bellows, right angle viewer, 3-D lens/viewer, etc.

During the interview, that you posted (Thank you!), they said that it was "important to the 645 series", but what about the bigger picture/line up?
