Dead battery deleting all photos? k3ii

Alright eventually I figured it out. They had written to the second card and I was able to use recovery software to get all my photos pre battery death on that one.
I often shoot to battery death because none of my batteries get me through 400 shots in a day of shooting.

Long story short my battery died while shooting a 6 minute exposure yesterday. I went to import photos this morning and I only have the 6 from after changing my battery. Im pretty sure I never clicked format card because I never saw the progress screen. I was using a relatively new 128gb sandisk ultra something. Ive used batteries till they were dead many times before with no issues. Has anyone experienced this? I'd like to be able to narrow down the cause of this, currently working on file recovery.

edit: Recovered photos from over a month ago, zero photos from yesterday so I didn't accidentally format card.

Isn't the NR what is being tested here? Or should the new chip have less noise before NR is applied by the setting?

Sorta depends on how you look at it. From the perspective of someone who wants to get a K1 but the price of the mk2 is a little high this is good news. Anyone who doesnít wanna upgrade but doesnít want to miss out on image quality this could also be assuring. To my knowledge none of the II cameras have had night and day differences to the original bodies in terms of image quality which hopefully shows how hard Pentax worked to produce maximum quality the first time around.

I didn't but I know that both the 150-600 and the p 150-450 are supposed to be pretty good quality lenses and both are far better than the Bigma 50-500 option we have. Is one better than the other, I do not know I wish someone like dxo mark had more pentax lens data. Is the tamron 150-600 at around $1000 new good enough for me definantly thats why I wish there was a k mount, the bigma probably not so much, 150-450 awfully expensive for my needs.

  1. One of the layers of coatings seems a bit smeared see 31mm lens issue - Album on Imgur

  2. I just never wanted to use it bad enough to use up to three editing programs for a single image i guess.

  3. my understanding is the digital coating comes with the D seris lenses and was designed to correct issues with digital sensors such as reducing purple fringing. There was such a long and technical thread on here one day all about the fa 31 and what the technical lens concerns people see are and coatings and so much stuff...

  4. Other than the dealer who used ot stock pentax stuff locally, the closes is 494 miles away that maybe stocks things

  5. Never looked into that, not sure how comfortable I would be asking someone I dont know to try out their K-1 if any of them have that model

  6. Does that mean the 15-30 and 24-70 may perform better/worse in terms of resolution and sharpness than their tamron cousins?

  7. this is related to 3 where, yes theres tons of lenses, but I don't know of most of them and gernally feel comfortable buying newer glass. The more I look into the k1 the less I see this being an issue outside of wanting something like the tamron 150-600 for that price

  8. at 15mp I'd rather just use my k3ii still if I specifcally wanted to use the crop only lenses such as my 70mm limited. I love my k3ii

  9. 100% of my worry about modern lens coatings is from my disapointment in the fa 31mm i boughts performance considering it should have cost more than twice what I spent. That and my lack of expirence with a wide array of glass, low years of exprience. Its a concern I appreicate people showing me when/how its a none issue because Id honestly like to get a k1 some glass and just be happy with it.

Yeah I meant the tamron 150-600 g2, I know that they and sigma make 4 pretty simialr focal lengths around there. I had read that the bigma 50-500 we can get falls off pretty fast but I dont remember hearing that the tamron was terrible at 600, so you very well could be right and the Pentax lens on the K1 may provide much better pictures which would make me happy. In the end, the least pain may be sticking with my k3ii and continuing to tell myself its good enough and try to be better with it.

I've looked at renting cameras, but after needing the body and at least one lens often the price is close to $200 for a few days which would only be enough time for me to evaluate a camera if I hated it. I don't have decades of experience with different bodies and lenses so I rely heavily on more experienced people's suggestions, reviews and statistics. A lot of the time I like to know I got the best performance per dollar possible that's why I bought into Pentax int he first place.

Granted my focus technique does need work, but I don't live in a city where I can practice everyday nor is street my main focus in photography as this discussion seems to have been turned towards. My main passion are landscapes and milky way nightscapes, but I don't really need any help with those just the lower noise levels and higher light gathering capictiy of full frame. Right now I'm spending hours image stacking (manually aligning 6+ star files takes time) and ending single images to try and make them look as clean and crisp as people who can get by with single raw exposures or stacks much smaller than mine requiring less computer power than I need.

Some people seem to be taking on a negative attitude towards me in their responses at this point. People seem to be taking a few negative points of mine, and instead of working through them with me, they're getting offended.

I'm also running a survey on Reddit about lenses, so far Pentax has a lens for every usage case anyone has brought up which makes me feel more at ease, except something like the Tamron 100-600 because of the quality and price difference with the 150-450. I am feeling more at ease wanting the K1 and more excited about the chance to spend long nights with it out in the mountains.

I didnt like the d810s fixed screen, dual format cards, or extra cost (+600 refurbished)
The kp lacks a lot of what I love about the k3ii. I was disappointed CP came and went with no mention of a crop body flagship replacement.

I mostly want to clean up my astro images and all of my cloudy PNW day street images plus the shallow depth of field play. I just keep getting told by everyone and everything "make sure you have the lenses you want, Pentax doesn't have many lenses" So i want to make sure that any major ones I do want are covered, all seem to be except a ultra zoom for a reasonable price, and a decent 35mmish alternative if I don't like the 31mm limited.

It might, or like you stated above it may be a combination of how i used it and being used on crop. If I had paid retail it would be gone but I paid less than 500 so it may be worth holding onto and hoping to break even posting it here if I end up not liking it.

Im not sure what I am trying to convince myself. I struggle in street scenes where i have less than 5 second to compose, focus and get a shot or miss it forever

So to start this off I just need to say I am very indecisive about this sort of thing and generally spend countless hours researching all the details, but in this case, I'm under somewhat of a time crunch. I bought a FA 31mm used with a minor lens coating issue and only have until Thursday to return it, I don't really like it for my k3ii so unless I commit to the K1 back it must go. I am also borrowing a tamron 70-200 that must go to its owner soon, and want to buy a rokinon for milkyway season that's coming up.
I have a decent selection of crop sensor Pentax glass mostly shoot my da* 16-50 2.8, starting to make use of a tamron 70-200 for long zoom shots would even enjoy something like a 100-600, and the 35 2.4 limited. I shoot a lot of landscapes, sunsets, cityscapes, street photography both mid day and after dark, milky way landscapes, water falls/ocean, and play around with portraits and what ever else is fun at the time. I love the feel of my k3ii, the weather sealing, this forums, sensor stabilization and horizon correction, how bracketing worked in manual, how I only needed menus to change shooting mode, gps though I have yet to really require it I like having it there, would like to get my astrotrace functional but haven't utilized it yet, never used pixel shift because light room didn't support it

I think I require the basic zoom trinity in FF, a rokinon 24 1.4 for milkyway, Id like one of those ultra sig/tamron zooms 100-600 ish for fun and probably a fast solid lens for street photography in cloudy Seattle. Im not sure if or when I would want more prime lenses or if I would really utilize focal lengths under 24 .
My concerns with the k1 or mk2 are: lack of digital coating primes (that 31 limited has purple fringing past f8 with my subjects) the only dealer in the PNW hardly supports Pentax anymore, its hard to find anyone in person with Pentax stuff to try out or buy, poor 3rd manufacturer support, the zoom lenses seem to be modified g1 tamron lenses with out IS but they often cost as much or more than G2 Tamron glass, lack of variety of lenses at different prices, i already struggle with the k3ii auto focus and I would really like a system people consider "great", slowness in which they are adding lenses, I don't really enjoy stop down metering to use old glass, Knowing crop mode is only 15mp, thinking even the crop glass that covers the frame is likely lower performance than FF glass.
If I don't stay here and go K1 Ill most likely go Nikon D750 giving up gps, that super cool k1 screen, IBIS, maybe some ergonomics but ill have several choices of zoom lenses at more price points, I can get more zoom than the Pentax 150-400 for far less money, I think there's more sub f2 prime lenses with modern lens coatings, I can try/ buy more in person, also have access to older used glass, would be easier to adapt to sony if I ever went mirror less afterwards.

I know this is a ton to go through but I don't have anyone I can sit down with and have a conversation about this who knows the Pentax system.

Sell a 35mm limited for the fa 31mm?

Anyone have some lens testing suggestions I should try out? I've shot with this lens on a couple occasions now and and I am running into pretty strong purple/teal and green edges around highlights. Granted Ive been shooting pretty much mid afternoon in hard light but it does not seem to be doing well shooting anything back light/ towards the sun at all. My da 35 macro has been used to shoot back light subjects and towards the sun with vary usable shots as has my DA* 16-50.
I want to like this lens but Im not seeing a reason people say its so much better than the da 35 2.8 macro...

Lightroom for basic color editing then into photoshop for manual star alignment and noise reduction stacking. I have a hard enough time blending the stacked sky back into the stacked foreground. The couple times Iíve tried the astro tracer it was extremely hard to blend, it also amplified the star distortion near the corners

They pretty much turned out how I expected them to in that pano, I just wanted someone else to tell me I didnít make a mistake buying my blemished copy so thank you :)
I have two justifications for keeping the 35, I donít like to bother with trying to sell things and I donít have a recplament macro... yet

Saw some similar results with mine today... donít honestly remember my zoom glass having issues like this hopefully Iíll learn to enjoy the purple haze :)

K1 Mk ii. Is Pentax marketing as dead as Tony Northrup says?

Check my phrasing, it was clearly a question and not a assumption.

To answer my own question. I was informed in another thread that basically when the camera performs internal noise reduction more photo detail is preserved because it happens before the final write of the image data. Doing it in post reduces detail because it happens after the fact and doesn't have the same chance to correct images.

So I went in to buy it, knowing I really wanted it. Wasn't stopped buy the lens element issue it had under $470 out the door. They described it as a lens coating error, to me it looks like its under the front element and and has that rainbow oily look when tilting it under light. Looking through shots with it from today, I honestly don't know what affect if any it has on image quality. I have 14 days to return it if I figure out it hurts my images more than we expected. Im including a link to a few shots of the lens, as well as a pano I shot before sunset. I suspect this lens will have more lens flare coming from the right side of the lens and I wanted to shoot the pano to try and demonstrate the lens flare as I rotated around the sun. It may not be the best way to determine the quality but I would greatly appreciate input from anyone who has this lens. 31mm lens

So I have the chance to pick up a used fa 31mm for under $500 at a local shop ( somewhat suspicious of the price but itís a long drive to just inspect it with out being sure Iíll buy it). I currently have the 35mm limited macro that hasnít actually gotten a lot of use. I feel like I have to get to close to macro subjects, I dislike the push in hood that always seems to slide back in and itís the same f 2.8 as my da*16-50 walk around lens. Iíve read all the great things about the fa31 itís probably fast enough to make it more viable for street shots (enjoy hanging out in the club district summer nights) and I like the fixed hood. Do I just have gas or is this too good of an opportunity to pass up? What can I hope to sell my 35 for? Then Iíll look into a budget macro replacement for the few times a year I use that.

I wish I looked into clear aperture before dropping the cash for a da*16-50 for astro. That math works out to a worse astro performance rating than your 14mm for significantly more.

Now I have been debating the 14,16,20 and 24 Sam/Rokinon lenses for a few days and just canít decide. If you broke your 14 today, which would you buy and why?

300 test | Flickr That's a link to a album I put together They should all be unedited. I've also posted about it in a previous thread. My main issue is how the lens handles highlights especially around edges. One of my tests, with a cement ball showed if I could stop way down to f13 that edge was gone but that's just not very practical most of the time.

I can actually see that same edge in Sandy's photo of the car. My lens is also the HD none plm model

I was thinking about replacing my 55-300 with a tam/sig 60-200 that way I have a fast high quality portrait length that maybe I can push for the occasional long focal shot or pick up a converter. Either that or save up and try to find a used bigma or similar super zoom

I know this has been answered before, but this morning I simply canít figure out wording for a search.

With a k3ii would I be better off with something like a sigma 60-200 and cropping a 200mm image down to the area of my 55-300 or looking for a higher quality 200+ focal length lens? I wanna get into telephoto for abstract landscapes and compression but my budget is preventing me from buying 1200 dollar plus glass. My 55-300 just isnít thrilling me iq wise.
