My top tip is to shoot RAW! For an old film shooter like me, it was a revelation. It's like being able to choose your film after you take the picture! And you don't need expensive tools like Lightroom to enjoy it. UFRaw and RAWTherapee are excellent free tools.

If you're ok with a manual flash, the Yongnuo YN-560-II is pretty good. Quality control is not so great, so buy from somewhere with no-hassle returns. Once you get a copy that works, these are great!

Love my K10D. Ever since I got an M42 adapter for it, it's been great using classic Takumar lenses. Kinda like the system I wished I'd had as a kid.

I like the K-3, but haven't bought one because I have a K-5 which meets most of my needs. There is one thing Pentax could do to make me want to buy a new camera. Give me the capability to display a histogram that shows what's in the RAW file. As of today, the histogram you see on the camera back reflects what's in the JPEG file. If you're shooting RAW only, the camera temporarily generates a JPEG for display purposes. I have been trying for some time to tweak my JPEG settings for the sole purpose of getting a histogram that shows me the RAW output, but I'm getting a little weary of it.

How about it, Ricoh? I'd buy a K-3ii if it had this capability. If you could add it to a K-5 firmware upgrade, that's an upgrade I would pay for.

Ok, so you've already got a K-30 and an 18-55mm WR lens. I say you should buy a case you can attach to your backpack straps where you can easily reach it while hiking. Spend the rest on an air ticket to someplace where you want to use it.

Sorry for the delay in getting back. The Linux software I was thinking of is PKRemote. It works with both my K10D and my K-5, using an ancient Dell laptop.

Available here:

PK-Remote | Free Security & Utilities software downloads at SourceForge.net

There's a Linux version of PK Tether. Check the Ubuntu marketplace. If Ubuntu doesn't have it, check SourceForge. I've got a copy working on my other laptop (at home).

Incandesant light

Do you mean the color of the light, or the shape of the illuminated area? To simulate the color, I would use a 1/2 CTO gel over the flash. Assuming you're using a speedlight, I'd use something like a round piece of tupperware or maybe a frosted globe from a light fixture to simulate the shape. Gary Fong (I think) makes something called a light sphere that might provide a similar effect.

You could also get a light bulb shaped flash that can be screwed into a lamp base. It's a flash, but will appear to the camera as a really bright lamp. All depends on what you want to do, I guess.

By the way, Strobist has lots of great information on using flash in many creative wyas.

Pentax K-5 and Yongnuo 560 III

You could use a pc to pc cable to connect the K-5's flash sync port (the plug right below the popup flash button) to the speedlite. But since the YN-560 III has a wireless receiver in it, I don't know why you wouldn't get an RF-602 or 603 transmitter instead. PC cables are a real pain in the a** to use. They fall out easily, bend when stepped on, can be tripped over, and they're not all that cheap.

Just my $0.02.

Is Histogram RAW or JPG?
Posted By ale_guy
Replies: 5
Just to follow up on this thread, I had noticed for some time that the histogram on my RAW files always shows an image underexposed when compared to its JPG (I shoot RAW+). Today was cloudy, so I took a gray card out on the patio and shot a few frames, using each of the color settings on my K-5. Excepting the "muted" color setting, the histogram for every JPG file was centered on the scale. When I pulled the RAW file into UFRAW, the RAW file was 1/2 to 2/3 of a stop to the left of the JPG histogram. My preliminary conclusion is that the K-5's RAW to JPG processing is brightening my photos.

Anyone else have a similar (or different) experience?

If you can, I'd suggest you scout the location ahead of time. All your questions seem to depend on environmental stuff like whether there is a raised stage or dais, and what kind of lights are in the room. It might also clue you in as to how far you will be from your subjects. Ceiling height and color will help you determine whether you can bounce flash.

If you only need to illuminate a small area, you could try a flash modifier, like a snoot. Or you could cover part of the flash lens with cardboard or electrical tape to make the beam narrower.

Poll: Transferring images - card reader or camera cable?

Hi. I used to use a card reader when transferring images from my K10D. The main reason I switched to a cable is that it's much harder to remove the card from my K-5. The door doesn't swing wide enough, or my fingers are too fat. Every time I remove an SD card from the K-5, it winds up on the floor.

I use a top-loading camera bag attached to the shoulder straps of my pack, as if it were a sternum strap. It's safe from impact and heavy rain. It's right there on my chest where I can get it out in a second or two. It looks dorky as anything, but it works.
