Lied to about condition of lens on Ebay help!

IMHO many of the Japanese eBay sellers' lens stock is sub-par and their descriptions deceptive. I regularly see a lens with fungus inside described as "exc++". Yes, I suppose OTHER than the fungus the lens is in excellent shape .. lol ;)
The price savings (if any) don't hold up to the hassle of having to return it later and I think that's part of what they are counting on. You may still be able to get a partial refund.. good luck!

Fish-Eye Options for the Q

I only know of one CS->Q adapter made by Hawk's Factory in HK. Idk if it's till made but I remember it was very expensive.
Yes the back focus distance is the limiting factor. I have a 220 degree FE in 12mm board mount but it hits the sensor and still not at infinity.
The whole IR block filter and holding frame would need to be removed (not just the glass) for it to work. Maybe it's just bonded on?

Pentax Auto 110 lenses for the Q

I've had good results with the Soligor 1.7x TC and 70mm 110 lens. Practical usage is kinda pain because there's a lot of play between the Q adapter, the TC and lens. Also I find the focus action on the 110 lenses to be too light and it's hard to just leave the focus set. Just by looking at it, the focus is already changed! (Schrödinger are you listening?) ;)

Had excellent viewing down in South Florida last night. I decided to try out the Astrotracer with my KP and discovered it could compensate for 10 sec exposures with a 1000mm lens!
Here is one result from two exposures of 10 sec each. It's only my second time using the O-GPS1 unit and it only allowed 10 or 20 sec exposures in B setting. So the moon is at iso 1600 and the stars at iso 65535. It's an f/11 reflex lens, and both were a lil overexposed but on the other hand there is no shadow noise either!

In my case I placed my order with Adorama via Rakuten to get an additional $60 OFF. However Rakuten abruptly cancelled my order stating reason as "Other".
So NO GO for me! They did refund immediately, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Next I went for the deal with B&H in Silver, due to arrive today! :)

Would've been nice to get the free lens, but idk that I really needed it anyway. What I wanted to point out is that the Adorama link(s) did not automatically select the "deal".
I remember thinking it very confusing that I had to click at the bottom of page to select among three "kit" variations. So it's entirely possible that some people thought they were ordering the "deal" when in fact it may have defaulted them to the base body only - and that's what they get. It would've been easy to overlook this in the heat of the moment!

Good find! This removes the IR cut filter by literally cutting out the glass! I was hoping that someone figured out a way to remove the whole retaining frame that the IR glass sits in .. to avoid the broken glass mess!
In any case it's the retaining frame that is in the way of my 220 FE lens to focus to infinity.

Went to check on a shipping update and looks like Rakuten abruptly cancelled my KP order (sold by Adorama) today.
What BS - reason stated as "Other" - I guess they weren't going to honor the $60 discount?!

Prob the last time I deal with the R people, at least they refunded immediately.
Good thing there's B&H to step in with free shipping!

I am also interested in removing the IR cut filter over the Q sensor.
I disassembled mine, but haven't been able to see how to easily remove it.

Pentax Mirrorless?

I see mirrorless FF or APSC as a kind of leveling the field and (finally) allow third party and other (older and possibly resurrected names) to (re)enter the enthusiast camera market.
Compared to the complicated mirrorbox assemblies with dozens of moving parts, mirrorless has only one moving part - the shutter (ok maybe IBIS also). But the mechanical shutter can be eliminated and replaced with just an electronic one, so we could see cams with zero moving parts.

So it's a very simple box with a sensor, a mount and some computing circuitry. At that point anybody can make one, even a DIY snap together kit .. lol! ;)

Sony has been very smart in realizing the huge profit potential with this but no doubt prices will come down with more competition. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc branded cams soon along with a many other names. At some point, these things are gonna be cheap and ubiquitous like mobile phones. The lenses will be the key to any successful marketing campaign. What will differentiate each brand - lenses, features, ergonomics, UI and of course price!

So where does that leave PENTA prism X ? Let's face it, the K mount has had a long run, but the days of mechanical levers and couplings are over. The K mount along with the other ol'SLR mechanical mounts will live on mostly just in adapters. We've seen the signs over the years with the major lens brands not releasing new designs in K mount and Pentax has already put a toe into the all-electronic mounts if only with just one lens. I certainly hope that Ricoh has been working on a new system of their own. God only knows what else could they be doing all the time since they are not really releasing anything new for a long time already!

Here's an SMC-A 50/1.4 also with fungus and scratches but in better cosmetic condition. Note the buggered up screws indicating (poor) previous disassembly!

Good for you Tom! That was a sweet deal, glad it is as good as it looked. I permanently attached a long plate via an extra 1/4x20 hole in the mount. So now it just drops right into a clamp on my video head, no twisting.
It's a specialized lens, but once you get the hang of focusing you'll be finding all those details in the distance and up close. Enjoy!

The Horse Flies have been very aggressive in certain parts of the Everglades this summer (like Flamingo).
Spent 5 days out at the beginning of July and brought one home (already dead).

Did a quite close up shot (MX-1) to go with my story, but plan to do some macro on this lil gal! ;)

Def hard to use, but my copy shows excellent detail when the focus is nailed, which takes some practice.
It also benefits from good PP to raise contrast, saturation some. With the Q on the back and a 2x TC it's at 11 200mm and I can start picking landing sites .. ;)

Just saw this one starting at $400 which is quite a deal:

No affiliation other than owning one myself. It's a specialized lens, very sharp once you nail the focus. Excellent Pentax built quality and very portable for the reach!

Great lens for solar and lunar imaging, see my story on last year's eclipse:

Very perceptive of you geo444!

I'm not sure I understand, you are not able to access my site?
You shouldn't have any trouble accessing a wordpress.com site unless your local provider is blocking it for some reason?

I'm really curious how you removed the IR filter? Is it just glued on, and you pried it off? I didn't want to force it since it's attached to the SR unit!

You've done some really phenomenal work with the Q continuum my friend! :)

Hi geo444, great astro work with your Q10 !

I am also interested in removing the IR cut filter over the Q sensor.
In my case I'd like the extra spectral sensitivity and need the room to mount a very short back focus fisheye lens, but haven't been able to see how to easily remove it.
If you achieve this, please let us know!

I have the K 1000/8 aka "Hubble Jr", which like yours is all black, making it very hot in the Florida sun. It was simple to order some 1/16" strechty closed cell foam sheet and cut my own lens coat with a lil bit of stitching. I went with lime green picture here in the wild!

The support is an older Bogen 3068 which has a 40lb capacity I think. The lens "only" weighs about 15lbs, so very solid. The tripod also weighs about 15lbs with the head. I'm actually able to stuff it all inside a sea kayak to take to remote locations.
