Hence riding a dual sport over a Harley. :D It wasnít smooth when I left 6 years ago either!

Back on topic, I donít like riding with anything on my body except maybe my wallet or at least some form of ID. Everything that can poke or break that normally goes in my pockets goes in the tank bag where itís safer and Iím safer in the event I go for an unplanned excursion.

My old Nikon d40 survived just fine with its 18-55 kit lens in the wolfman enduro tank bag, loosely wrapped in a cheap dry bag for protection against everything else in the bag, on my WR250R for several 5-6000 mile trips. Iíd have no problem packing my KP and 20-40 Limited in the same way, but I much prefer a good point and shoot for portability on two wheels. I have an Olympus TG4 for this kind of work with digital, and a Olympus XA for film which I prefer.

I commuted daily on two wheels from Towson to Fells Point when I was in college. Didnít own a car for almost 4 years and rode just about every day. I miss the great roads in Baltimore County and Frederick County.

Cool shot.

Have you tried using the transform tool in Lightroom to make the organ pipes vertical? It looks... weird the way it is.

It really is a great combination. I do wish the DA21mm was weather sealed for prime travel, but the KP and 20-40 is hard to beat.

i believe you can change what the green button does in most modes, so it doesnít have to just toggle auto-ISO in AV mode. I mostly use it in P and with manual lenses in AV mode for stop down metering.

National Parks Photo Excursion

Agree 100%. Iíve not yet been to these parks, but Alaska has similar terrain. The landscape is just too big and too far away to try to get it all in one shot with an ultra-wide. Multiple shot stitching yields far better results in my experience; itís helpful for good results to set exposure manually or lock it and set the camera to manual focus.

As far as bears, the Park service was recently on a local radio program on NPR talking about the best ways to protect yourself from bears in the backcountry. After studying years of recorded incidents, what they found:

1 - donít go alone. There were almost no recorded bear attacks against groups of 3 or more, and many of the attacks on groups involved hunters field dressing an animal. Two is enough of a group to cut down the odds significantly as well.

2 - donít scare bears. Make a reasonable amount of noise as your walk. A conversation should be enough, or bells and other ďhumanĒ sounding things to let bears know your coming. Try to avoid walking in to tall grass, brush, and dense thickets where visibility is limited as thatís where bears will likely be sleeping or resting. *Most* bears want to be left alone...

3 - If a bear doesnít want to be left alone, thatís when you need bear spray and/or a firearm. Keep in mind your target is roughly the size of a dinner plate, and is going to be running at you not in a straight line but bouncing around with teeth and claws at 40mph...

The park service up here says to try to keep at least 100 yards between you and bears, which is plenty close enough for me if Iím not in a vehicle.

If you follow 1 and 2, youíll probably never have to deal with 3. As a photographer it would be nice to have a second person to act as a spotter. Two sets of eyes sees more animals, and can watch your back while youíre shooting too.

Iíd personally ditch the 18-55 for a better wide. Pentaxís 12-24 would be high on my list as a general purpose wide lens if my Sigma 10-20 and Pentax 20-40 limited disappeared tomorrow. Iíd also consider a used DA16-45 as a general do it all wide. Itís hard to use the full width of the 10mm...

What's everyone's take on the rear screen on the KP? I absolutely love the color and detail and user-friendliness out of the files from this camera once I've seen them on a computer. However when I invariably end up chimping during a session and review the images on the back screen to see if I've gotten a shot many many times I've found that what I initially rejected as "missed" when I reviewed in-camera have look great to spectacular once imported to Lightroom. Are there settings to make the screen better or is it just what it is and I have to re-learn trusting my instincts as a photographer.

Itís hands down better than the 18-55 kit lenses, in every possible way except price. In the equivalent range I also think itís a better lens than the 18-135 I started with.

I had the DA21mm and the DA40mm Limiteds, green rings, and I replaced them both with the 20-40 with 0 regrets except maybe for overall size. The convenience of not switching lenses makes up for it as I often find myself wishing for a ďkinda wideĒ and a ďkinda telephotoĒ lens and would otherwise be constantly switching. I also tried the DA35mm limited but it couldnít find a home in my bag either.

Sharp? Itís sharp enough that I never find myself wishing I was able to capture more fine detail in my subjects so long as my shutter speeds are high enough. Itís also a very wonderful lens for portraits.

How would you measure and quantify ‘pixie dust’ anyway? Grams per line inch? Pentax seems to have figured out how to add it to all of the limiteds thankfully, so someone has it figured out on their design team.

As far as sharpness, I get more than I need from my copy. Flickr's jpeg compression on the other hand...
