QuoteQuote:

Are you in communication with Canon and Nikon around their new mounts?
Around the new systems? No, not at all. We have a great interest in the two new systems but right now I have no plans.

So they wont offer any lenses in these mirrorless mounts for the time being. Just like for PK they probably want to see healthy marketshare before they invest.

QuoteQuote:

What is your opinion of Canon and Nikon’s new lenses for the RF and Z mounts?
I’ve been very impressed by Canon’s new lenses for RF.

Not even mentioning any Nikon lens is a clear sign he is quite underwhelmed with what Nikon roadmapped. He is not alone.

Asahiman actually wrote

It can mean that there are pro * and non-pro lines for lenses. Or it could mean that they do new limiteds and new DFA*s.

It can mean that in a year or two or three they will have two FF cameras in addition to one or two APSC cameras.

It can mean a lot of things.

Do not attribute your personal, potentially quite faulty, interpretation to somebody else who is highly regarded here. Especially in rumor threads false attributing is bad style.

We still have a market. So unless someone can actually provide solid evidence against it, prices are driven by demand first.

Camera manufacturer lenses always (even with the exact same specs) can demand a massive +30%-50% premium on top of what 3rd party lenses can be priced at.
The market simply does not value 3rd party lenses a lot, regardless of some internet geeks' little personal opinions.

If someone doesnt like this then dont buy it incl. any system. Whining about it is just childish and disqualifies the whiners. It simply is like it is, regardless if we like it or not.

Forums are there for exchanging opinions, so you have to live with other opinions or just stay away.

Much more so when nobody seems able to show any photographic evidence that this lens is optically better than any other old mediocre manual focus lens.

No evidence of it being worth more than the discussed 276 EUR in mint condition for anyone else than collectors.

Since providing full res images is so simple I would agree to your points but add that both scenarios need to be provided so any watcher can make up their mind. If it is a good lens the owners will have hundreds of images of all kinds with that lens. Sharing 5 different ones of them is a matter of minutes.

Other than crystal ball.

1. You are not investing. You buy throw-away entertainment electronics. That was already the case with DSLR and is more so the case with DSLM. Sony for example treats cameras like they did with Walkmans. Every month a new model and the old one is forgotten and drops in price.
If money is important, only buy used cameras and best 1 generation behind. Never spend more than $1000-1500 on a FF camera then. Don buy more than 2-3 lenses in 2 years.
With all the mount changes getting en vogue it is a false assumption that lenses are safe.

2. The most likely scenario (based on the last 10 years) is that the only safe bet is the single big player: Canon. Very, very unlikely they fold or withdraw. They already are close to leading not only the DSLR but also the DSLM market. The small competition from Olympus, Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic all have some major risk involved that they do not survive in the still shrinking market now overflowing with options.

Or provide sample raw files of meaningful subjects at infinity distance shot wide open? Or at least 36 MPx full res images? Or a set of 100 % crops?

All we get from a lens that is claimed to be very good is web samples which can't be distinguished from smartphone shots or any other lens.

Why are from the very few samples so many stopped down (a lot)? A f1.8 lens has to deliver wide open.

How to compare Flash Power (against others)?
Posted By beholder3

HSS is no base for calculation as it just means your shutter is faster than 1/200 on the K-1. HSS power absoliuetely depends on the exact shutter speed. The faster the less power.
An Pentax AF540 in non-HSS has the abovementioned GN 45. If you go to 1/1000 sec HSS it drops to 11.7 (only 1/4 of the power).

You do need exact parameters from you desired shooting and need to compare it with exact figures from the manufacturer which you need to goggle or ask their support about. Homework for you to do.

You check the power tables for the used product for either 70mm or 80mm.

No data for such stuff anywhere. You need to try it out to find out how many stops of light they suck up.

That is simple. You just stop down your lens in the test 45/28=x1,6 times more than you would do in the real scenario. In practise that means by about one stop. So if you actually want to do a portrait at F1.4 you just need to run your test at F2 to simulate the M400.

You are citing the wrong person. I said that I base my judgement on the available images like many people do.
You say, you based your decision on posted images as well.

The user Kerrowdown argued against your case and said that your decision was not "informed" because you did not own and handle the lens before you bought it, you "just" watched images.

Anyhow, all the images in this thread are of a quality supporting my position that the A*135mm definitely is not a "great" lens. By modern standards it seems it is not even average.

The Gold standard is to compare GN at ISO 100 at the same focal length (!) and the latter should be typical, like 50mm.

In the last 10 years flash makers have tried to make idiot users by advertising only the light output at the narrowest possible reflector.

The M400 has a GN of 28 (metric) at ISO 100 and 50mm. So at F4 you can brighten up a target in 7 m distance.

The RF60X has a GN of 45 (metric) at ISO 100 and 50mm. So at F4 you can brighten up a target in 11 m distance.
Thats the same GN as the Pentax AF540 I btw.

Many, many companies are doing this type of thing these days. I have never understood why I should invest effort for this.

Companies are commercial constructs and if they want something from me they have to pay for it.

If this was a non-profit organization with non-payed volunteers asking for photos, fine. Then I could help.

I know for a fact that the upcoming PF review of the lens will have a section on aberrations with sample images. ;)

The "settle the debate" thing won't ever work, because you'll always find one poor guy on the internet who claims to need "more / better" for his super specific personal wishlist.
I could easily name you three "poor quality" aspects of every lens ever manufactured on this planet if I was in that trolling state of mind.

When using the naming conventions used here I'd say that the lens shows no comatic aberrations, no tangential astigmatism and mild sagittal astigmatism.

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art shows about the same mild sagittal astigmatism plus some mild external comatic aberrrations.

I am quite sure that none of those two portrait lenses have been designed with any focus on astrophotography and quite rightfully so.

Surely not at theoretical ratings from liars and sadly incompetents, such as DxO. No serious enthusiast I know would take their nonsense as basis for "competitiveness". :)

That is perfectly in line with the latest CIPA figures:

https://photorumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CIPA-overall-shipments-graph.png

Two out of three customers buy DSLRs still.

It all over and over repeats the fact that mirrorless is just another dinosaur variant - an clunky ILC. And super expensive ones typically compared to entry level DSLR, so mirrorless is non competetitive.

All the recent DSLMs have just gotten fatter and more clunky to the point of not showing any size advantage any longer.

The same goes for DSLM FF lenses, some of which (see Nikon Z) are now 2x the size of same DSLR lenses and not even good performers.

--> 100 people will define the optimum of size versus quality in 100 different ways.
--> for the FF large size seems a complete non-issue for 90% of the market assuming Canon and the small players have access to market reserach data on this.

After having seen the sad corner performance and strong vignetting of the same price brandnew Nikon 24-70mm f/4 S at F4 and even at F5.6, which happens to be 3 full stops slower on a much broader lens mount, the DFA* 50 is even more a great lens.

After this Photokina I think the downward spiral of the already chaotic ILC dinosaur camera industry has gained a lot of momentum everywhere:
  1. Pentax is doomed since the 1970s. No changes. :D

  2. Sony A mount is doomed due to Sony FE mount getting all the love

  3. Nikon F mount is doomed due to Nikon Z mount now getting all the love and F mount is dead as A mount

  4. Canon EF mount is doomed due to Canon R mount now getting all the love and EF mount is dead as A mount

  5. Sigma SA mount is doomed due to Sigma L mount now getting all the love

  6. Sony FE mount is doomed since Sonys DSLM position suddenly went from monopoly to small player in a tiny tank with much bigger fishes, at least four of them. No sustainable strategy on the horizon.

  7. Nikon Z mount is doomed since with mediocre overpriced cameras and 3 clearly below average lenses nobody other than diehard fans will invest

  8. L mount is doomed because no significant players are supporting it. Where is the difference to Sigma SA mount?

  9. Canon R mount is doomed since Sony spec sheets look much nicer

  10. mFT is doomed since tiny sensors like mFT are eaten alive by smartphones. And Pansonic already jumped ship to FF.

  11. Olympus is doomed too. No major product announcement at Photokina, whaat? Double-doomed. A rejection of FF. An aging flagship body.

  12. Hasselblad. Well. Were they ever alive?

  13. Fuji X-mount is doomed since in spite of all their marketing they have not gained any significant traction and are even still behind tiny Sony. No FF even on the horizon. They are basically where Pentax was 5 years ago.

Cackle. Cackle.

All the while the total market is still shrinking with most players targeting the handful rich grandpas who do not mind shelling out two or three grand for photography toys with not even a single lens included.

All the while the real advancements in camera technology happen in non dinosaur ILC world regardless of with or without optical viewfinder: In smartphones, automotive and gadgets.

The dying mirrorless and DLSR industry has completely failed to innovate to attract new users. All they come up with is incremental changes and products which only cannibalize others.

I guess within 2-3 years we'll see a whole bunch of casualties from this situation. Probably not Canon because they will likely continue to extend their total domination.

Cackle.

In the meantime we all can ignore all this, buy nothing new at all, and go outside enjoying our existing toys and taking lovely shots for many years to come.
