Pentax MX Shutter Release Replacement

Pretty sure that the MX piece is unique to that model. Eric Hendrickson (Home-Pentaxs) would be the person to do the repair, and he likely has a supply of parts.

Should I finally invest in a K-1?

I've been using it on film all along - but digital has its place and the FA20-35 is a decent performer on the K-1. It's not either or, it's both-and. :)

I finally made the jump - started with a K10D, then a K5, and now just pulled the trigger on the K1 mk ii. Looking forward to finally releasing my FA20-35/4 onto its native format. :)

There was a member here some years ago - Violini I think was his name - who was capable with this repair. I have an MZ-7 that he swapped a metal gear into.

A very good option, if you can find one. 20-35mm on full frame is a very nice range.

Pentax KX, sound like a good deal for beginner?

I've never warmed to the KX, but I love the K2DMD. I'm an aperture-priority type. I've never tried a MZ-S (too expensive) but the PZ-1 is surprisingly intuitive... and a much better value than the MZ-S in my opinion. Flagship AF film body for under $100.

The Pz-1 / Pz1-p has a faster shutter (1/8000) than the MZ-S (1/6000). The MZ-S also seems to share the same dreaded plastic mirror gear that is the achilles heel of the MZ / ZX series, though there are less reports of failed MZ-S cameras than the more common MZ bodies.

I agree that the MZ/ZX series are prone to failure, but the PZ-1 and PZ1-p seem to be doing just fine.

Is that the OEM hood? It doesn't look like it to me. If it's not the OEM one it might vignette on full frame.

The DA40 limited and the DA40XS both cover 35mm format just fine. I use the DA40XS on my MZ-7 and ZX-L film bodies regularly, along with the DA 35/2.4 (which is also a great lens on film).

For the price of a repair one could likely find a PZ-1 instead...

For the low prices it commands these days, I'd also try out the F50/1.7 if I were you. Great lens.

I have a few that I ordered last year. I tried my hand at fixing a MZ-5n and failed. :) So as of last year they remained available.

1958 Asahi Pentax "K"

Yep - out in the valley.

At that price, I knew it wouldn't last long, and I knew there wasn't much point in trying for it.

You should send it to Eric for a CLA if you want to use it.

Yes, I saw that - lovely.

If that K had been black, I would have tried for it! :)

I saw that one pop up on craigslist - glad it went to a fellow Pentaxian on the forum. The K is a svelte little thing, isn't it? I had one years ago as well.

How can I scan my negatives for archival purpose ?

This.

Your negs are what you archive. 100 years from now, do you think it will be easier to access a digital copy or an actual negative?

This is one reason I've made a point of photographing my kids with film every so often.

Poker face is exactly right. It was hard - my heart rate was definitely up there!

The worst part was waiting for the reply after sending my inquiry. She phoned, and said someone was coming to look at it tomorrow, but would I want to come that night? Heck yes! I'm already out the door!

Once I was in the car and around the corner it is possible something like this may have occurred! :)

Yes, they seemed a bit nervous that I might investigate the camera. I was doing my best to be casual as I examined the lens. It was a bit awkward, but I think we both went away happy with the deal. :)

"I have a particular set of skills" - and in my case, I knew from the blurry, small photo that it was the K50/1.2 based on its relative size to the camera (it was mounted on the ME Super). I think the seller knew the camera was dead, but I obviously did not care at all. :)

Craigslist has been good to me - I also got my very nice FA20-35/4 locally for $350 (if memory serves) many years ago. That seller knew it was a good lens, but wasn't pricing it quite to where it might have been priced.
