I lowered my asking price by $100. I have a pending offer on eBay, but would much rather sell to a forum member.

Pentax K1 body, MINT, low shutter count 7378, all original accessories and packaging

Asking Price
1,290.00 1,175.00 USD

Item Location
Oakland (United States)

Item Description
I am selling this like-new K1 because I just got it, but already have a K1 Mk II !!!

$1290 $1175 USD, shipping free within the United States and I will cover the first $25 USD of international shipping and insurance, USPS Priority Mail with tracking. Buyer responsible for any transaction fees or I accept Venmo, or Zelle with no fees.

I will ship worldwide, but contact me first for a shipping quote if outside the United States.

This camera is like new and has a shutter count of 7387. It has screen protectors on the main LCD and the top LCD.

See below for pictures, including the photo I took to get the shutter count. The full-resolution, RAW DNG of this image can be downloaded from my Google Drive here: IMGP7338.DNG - Google Drive

Here is the story. I had just bought the K1 ii when a fellow fourm member offered me his entire full-frame kit (with 4 lenses, including the DFA 24-70 and DFA 150-450 - two lenses that I coveted). I couldn't resist the offer, so I bought the whole lot. I just received it a few days ago. His gear is immaculate, and actually the K1 is in much better condition than the K1 ii that I also bought used recently. I need to sell this K1, along with a bunch of other stuff I will list soon to make up for this huge purchase that I can't really afford.

Note, I have also listed this K1 on "FleaBay", but you can save a bunch of $$ by buying from me here on the forum.

Your satisfaction with this camera is absolutely guaranteed, but I'd be utterly shocked if you were unsatisfied.

Note, this is my very first sale on the Forum, but I have been a member for a long time, and there are well-respected members here that can vouch for me. If you have any concerns please PM me and we can talk.

Tammy 17-50 lens or K-5 body causing major issues - return lens or replace body?

tibbitts,

Thank you for this. I'm somewhat heartened to hear that your experience with this lens is similar to mine. I tested my copies wide open and different focal lengths, but this lens is known to be weakest (as is typical for zooms, I gather), wide open at it's longest focal length. The test comparison should best highlight the differences between copies at the focal length and aperture I presented. I don't have another body to test the lens on, so I can't determine if the -10 setting required is due to mis-adjustment of the lens or of the phase detection sensor in the body. I kinda' hate that focus adjustments that are always needed, and how hard it is to nail focus with the K5 in general, even after making these careful adjustments; not to mention that there is no way to adjust a zoom lens correctly for every focal length. I am longing for a great mirrorless option like Nikon, Canon, and Sony offer with sophisticated phase detection on the imaging sensor and/or great focus tracking. Those systems also have a much better selection of modern lenses available in the long focal lengths that a wildlife photographer like me needs. I am toying with the idea of jumping ship for Nikon, but waiting to see what Pentax releases this year first, and to see if there are any hints about Pentax joining the mirrorless revolution.

Conclusion: The new, made in Vietnam lens was sent back to B&H, and returning it was a breeze. B&H does have excellent customer service. I have done some work with the old lens, but haven't used it much in the last few months, and when I did, I focused in live view. I am in the process of purchasing a Sigma 17-50 HSM lens. I am hoping for an update to the K-3 line or a new crop sensor or full sensor MILC sooner rather than later, so I can upgrade from the K5.

AF fine tune

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that many people tend to overthink this. On a camera with Live View (i.e. contrast-detect focus), just photograph something contrasty parallel to the image sensor. I tape a piece of junk mail to the wall. Set camera on tripod, switch to live view, push shutter half way to focus, turn off live view and push shutter half way again - if the focus ring moves in phase-detect focus from where it was after focusing in live view, then you will know if you need an AF fine adjustment, and you will also know in which direction to adjust. Make an AF adjustment and repeat the live view vs. phase detect focus test until the focus ring no longer moves between focus methods. This seems to work great for me on any AF lens.

I have not tried to fine tune a MF lens, and my method would be cumbersome using MF. I like the sound of pschlute's wine bottle method:

Tammy 17-50 lens or K-5 body causing major issues - return lens or replace body?

Okay, I added some 100% crops of my tests at 50mm and f/2.8 to the original post above.

It's 100% obvious that, regardless of possible problems with my K-5 body, the new Tamron 17-50 that I ordered is complete junk. The performance of my old lens, even with slightly sub-optimal AF fine adjustment, should totally outperform the new lens.

I will return the new lens, hold on to the old lens, and hope for a K-3 iii soon to replace my K-5. I'm suspicious that my K-5 really does have some issues with the image sensor and/or phase-detect sensor.

Problem solved (sorta'). Still, I welcome any comments.

Thanks, ZombieArmy.

I appreciate this viewpoint. My concern is that the Sigma is more expensive and heavier. I am tight on cash, and with physical problems that I have, I am looking for the lightest kit possible. Also, I have heard that the IQ on the Tamron (good copy) easily exceeds the IQ of the Sigma (though I realize this is probably trivial in practice). Pentax options are out due to price and that I need to be able to work at F/2.8.

Tammy 17-50 lens or K-5 body causing major issues - return lens or replace body?

Hello,

I hope someone can help. I recently purchased a new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 because my old one seemed way out of focus when shooting at infinity. I've come to realize that the old lens was actually severely front-focusing. It had, in the past, developed the dreaded loose front element, which I fixed myself. I thought I had maybe not tightened up the front element properly (some may know that the front element can be loosened and rotated in and out slightly to calibrate, or this is what I have read). I tried the front element tightened down at various points along its possible rotation path, but the lens was still severely front-focusing (maximum AF fine adjustment in the K-5 menu was not able to solve the problem completely, but gets it fairly close at f/2.8. It could probably use an adjustment of -11 or -12, if it were possible)

So, I ordered a new lens. The new lens requires -9 AF fine adjustment, or almost the maximum possible of -10! Also, the new lens is less sharp (or less contrasty, I can't really tell) than my old lens when shot wide open using live view AF and self timer on a tripod. Is this two bad lenses or is my K-5 body messed up?

Also of note are the two lenses do not seem to have the exact same optical axis when mounted. Carefully mounting both copies so as not to disturb my set-up, the exact center of the image of my test target is in a slightly different spot in the frame when shot with each lens. This leads me to think my new lens and/or my old one is bad...

But, I also made some observations that lead me to think at least part of the problem is with my K-5 body: images of the target taken with both lenses are rotated about 1.25 degrees counter-clockwise. I was very careful to make sure both the target and camera were dead level before taking photos. Also, the center point of the image migrates slightly to the upper left of the frame as the lenses are zoomed in - this happens on both lenses. Is this normal? These results lead me to think that I have a misaligned image and or phase-detect sensor in my K-5 body. In addition, the images from both lenses appear softer on the left side.

So, do I have bad lenses, a bad body, or a combination of the two, and what do you think I should do? I must return the new lens very soon if I am to get a refund on it. Thanks, in advance, for your help!

~ Jon

P.S. My K-5 was purchased new from an authorized dealer and has just under 5000 clicks on the shutter, and I have taken very careful care of it (not that this precludes it from developing problems)

P.P.S My Tammy 90mm f/2.8 macro requires -5 AF fine adjustment on my K-5 at this point, but I have not tested it further yet.

P.P.P.S. Here are 100% crops of the old (self-repaired) lens and the new Tammy 17-50 that I just ordered:

I have the Tamron 17-50mm and I am very happy with it. Only drawback with the K-5 is that the lens is not WR like the body, but you can't beat the price for the quality of glass. I would love to have a copy of the Pentax 15mm Limited, but I just can't justify that expense to myself.

My major problems with Adobe customer service

Hello Friends,

If anyone can help me by providing some advice about how to resolve my problem, detailed in my latest email to Adobe customer service, included below. I have already spoken with B&H's customer service and they told me that I need to resolve the issue with Adobe, but I have had no assistance from Adobe at all. They have promised multiple times to follow up by phone or email, but have not.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Hello,

It has now been over a week since I sent you the email message included below this one. I have received no assistance with my problems registering my software and requesting a complimentary post-announce upgrade to Lightroom 4.0.

The copy of Lightroom 3.2 that I have been trying to register was purchased new and unopened from B&H photo and video of New York as a full retail version of the software. I have spoken to B&H's customer service department, and they told me that they received the software directly from Adobe as a retail product, yet I have been told by Adobe customer service that the software (serial number [REDACTED]) is already registered to another person! I have been promised multiple times (over the phone, over web chat and over email) that this problem would be investigated by Adobe customer service, but no one has contacted me to resolve the issue. I first reported this problem to Adobe customer service almost three weeks ago.

To summarize my problem, I have attempted to register my retail copy of Lightroom 3.2, purchased as a new full retail product from an approved Adobe software reseller (B&H photo and video). Though I can view the serial number as registered under my Adobe account, I am told by adobe customer service that the software serial number is already registered to another person. I have been trying to register my legitimate, legal copy of Lightroom 3.2 and request a complimentary post-announce upgrade to Lightroom 4.0, but this has failed as the information submitted to Adobe keeps disappearing from the Adobe online portal. My invoice is attached to this email. This is the seventh time I have attempted to submit this proof of purchase to Adobe, but I have received no assistance yet.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Partsch

Why the D-800(E) is not worth jumping-ship for

Your point is well taken. I shoot wildlife in the field so the K-5 is a much better (potential) tool for me, but I think that in can be stated objectively that the K-5 is a much more versatile tool than the D-800 (on paper).

36 MP is at the border of what I would consider reasonable vs. excessive. I think 4 fps (6 fps in DX "crop") mode is just too short to "capture a moment", even if you are doing documentary-style wedding photography, for example - especially if you want to do HRD or exposure bracketing or something.

Yes, this is exciting news, but if Nikon can do it, Pentax/Ricoh can do it better! Here's why I don't find the D-800 or D-800E compelling

1. 36 MP is too much! Too much storage space needed, too much processing power needed in post, too much work for the photographer! 24 MP is the upper end of what I consider reasonable. The sensor out-resolves most lenses - especially along the margins of the frame, where the FX format sensor has it's only advantage over APS format.

2. Slow full-format maximum framerate of 4 fps. This is just sad, and makes this camera crap for sports or wildlife photography.

3. 0.7x magnification viewfinder is too small for an FX format camera! Pentax should make one with 0.9x at least!

4. no in-body stabilization! Pentax will include this!

5. Pentax has glass that will match better (edge/corner sharpness) with a ultra-high resolution full-frame sensor in the future.

6. A Pentax offering will doubtless offer better build quality with better weather-sealing than a Nikon.

7. Test results are not in yet - we have yet to see if this sensor can beat even the K-5 for low-light noise and dynamic range.

The one feature of the D-800E that I do find compelling is the lack of the AA filter. That is a great option. I think Pentax can and should offer this option on a cheaper, faster, better-built 24 MP full-frame camera.

What do you think?

I am so excited about this announcement! I may be tempted to buy it with adapters before it comes out in k-mount. I need Minolta MF mount adapter too! This could very well exceed my dreams of a Pentax MILC/EVIL camera and keep me from buying into the Sony NEX system. I hope the K-mount is announced soon!!!!

I can't wait to see how this sensor tests! I am interested in the lack of an AA filter, as it would allow more control of detail if one is willing to do some PP.

Your thoughts regarding my planned "travel tripod" purchase

Thanks for the suggestion - this looks like a great product, but way above my current budget as I am trying to save up for the K-5

Call me old-fashioned, but I haven't met a tripod yet that I'd be willing to spread my legs for on the first shoot ;)

Yes! That's exactly why I am looking for a lighter tripod! I only take the monopod with me on trips anymore because the old tripods are so cumbersome in comparison. I am looking for something similarly light and portable that will provide a stable platform for longer focal lengths or longer exposures than the monopod.

Thank you all for your input. I couldn't find a product more compelling to me than what I listed above, so I pulled the trigger last night on the purchase. PF will be getting its cut of my B&H purchase :)

Hello Folks,

I currently use a minty Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 300mm f/2.8 LD IF (360B) which produces stunning results, even matched with the 2x converter (01F). My passion is wildlife photography - especially birds (which are often small and far away). I am considering selling this lens to finance the purchase of a Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM.

Is this a good idea?
Will I be sorry if I do this?

Tamron pros:
F2.8
ability to use a good TC

Pentax pros:
Autofocus
lighter weight

Please help me decide! Thanks so much!
