Im interested in the Sigma, is this the steady 2.8 version? I have the other 2.8-40 which when I bought I thought it was the 2.8 I was wrong I was disappointed, as its 2.8 on the 18mm and not at 50 I was going to use it to shoot some concerts but it failed miserably in the low light. Whats your experience with the lens? Would it work for my needs?

Today when i took my memory card out of my Q all was good... But when i went to put back in the lock wouldnt work thus making the card unreadable. Is there a way to remedy this? Right now i stuck a tissue in there to keep down when i close the tray seems to be an ok fix but not permanent.

I just bought your k5, k5II, K5IIs book last night and i was quite disappointed. While the title says its for all 3 cameras, it specifically is for the k5 not the other two. After a quick glance it seems you didnt cover anything on the other 2 cameras which is what i specifically bought the book for. Maybe i missed something? Or all 3 cameras are that similar that you can blanket write for the 3 of them? Just curious how i should read this.

Yes Normhead, still have them and looking to unload some as well. But I agree my next "budget" lens will be 35mm 2.4 I'll actually be grabbing a used one from a fellow Pentaxian. I cant wait to give it a try 35mm just seems to be that great length

Onggie hop aboard, I've read some great reviews about the Tamron 28-70 2.8 its a bit more expensive than the $300 mark but not by much and from the sounds of it, worth it.

@selar thank you so much for the tip! That advice will go a long way, I appreciate it. Hopefully that'll get me some better photographs, I'll be going to a show early next month and i'll be putting this to use then for sure.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! And while I have a bunch of lenses, I'm trying to help some others out who may be beginners looking for budget lenses.

@selar thanks I been looking to get a flash but because I'm usually in close proximity to the performers I always feel like a flash is a bad idea due to it annoying/distracting the performer. Do you have a suggestion for a proper budget flash?

I was curious what to some fellow Pentaxians thought were the best lenses for beginners when it comes to ease of use, price, and depth of learning. I've been with my Pentax for a couple years now and in that time I've gathered many lenses, from all different ranges. I'm still a beginner and I still have a lot to learn, not only about how to shoot but the gear involved in helping me get that perfect shot. One thing I've learned great lenses can cost, and for a new shooter who just dropped a good chunk of change on his SLR might be not so quick to drop $5-800 right away for those dream lenses. What are some lenses you love and consider must haves in your bag or on your camera that don't really break the bank? I know this thread is wide open and often times the environment affects the lens choice, but tell me (us) the environment you shoot in and what lens you use. In other words if you shoot landscapes what would you consider a proper start out lens, portraits, food, street, etc. I hope this thread can help myself and some other new/beginner Pentaxians out.

My first and favorite lens which rarely leaves my K-x is....

Pentax F 50mm 1.7

I love this lens it's great in most situations. It sometimes can be a little too close for comfort in cramped quarters but overall I don't have any complaints, and suggest everyone get one of these 50's whether it be the F series or FA.

Let's pretend budget price is under $250

This is concerning... As I shoot mostly in low/colored light at concerts/small venues where its dark and strangely lit. Although the reviews on Adorama seem to extremely positive and I only saw two complainers out of 50 on the k-5. Sadly the K-5 II/s is out of my price range but it is nice to dream...

Thanks everyone and Bird Dude I totally plan on keeping my K-x! It seems to be a pretty split decision at this point but I'm so happy to hear about all the different upgrades and it seems either choice is a good one. I think if I find a good deal on a used k-5 here on the forums I'll go for that, but gonna keep my eyes out for a k-30 while waiting for a good k-5 to jump out at me.

Thanks for the replies so far! The k-30 looks extremely nice! Is it possibly to run an external mic to this camera? If not that's quite ok, I was actually quite impressed with K-x's mic quality but using an external mic for live performances is always a plus, especially when I dont have to synch them later on lol.

I hope this is the right section for this, as the new year rolls in I was thinking about buying a new DSLR. Because, I've been solely a Pentax user I'd like to stick with the system rather than jumping ship to Nikon or Canon. I've had the Kx for a few years and I like it a lot but it does have its drawbacks as no on screen AF points, 720p video, 12mp, lack of line in audio and some other minor things that come with age. I don't wanna spend an arm and a leg as I'm poor and a cheapskate so I dont plan on buying K-5 II but I'd like something better than my handy K-x. I've seen good prices on the K-01 but the lack of viewfinder turns me off as I find shooting on an LCD to be slow and unresponsive (though I dont know what it's like on the k-01). I also do a lot of concert shooting and I heard the the sensor isnt so good in low light so that worries me? I figured you guys might know what are some better options than I or perhaps upgraded from the K-x yourself and can give a good recommendation. My friends are telling me to go Canon and I don't want to so please any help you can give is appreciated.

Photography classes/mentor near RI or Boston?

Photography has been consuming my life, I bring my camera (K-x) everywhere and I think about photography quite a bit, kinda like the samurai with his sword... but sadly all samurais start as beginners but through practice and having a sensei itll help them become the samurai master theyve wanted to become. I'm pretty new to photography, Ive bought a book Understanding Exposure which is great but I'm more of a hands on learner and when I learn something from a book it really doesnt stick kinda like cooking with a recipe for the 1st time or traveling to a unknown place with a map, while the info is right in front of you its ok but take it away and youre scratching your head.

I'm looking to either take some photography classes or have make a new friend/mentor that will teach me the ropes and help me out. I've looked at some photography classes in the past it was kinda confusing... like ive seen photo/camera shops offer classes... is that different than taking a photography course? what are the benefits of taking one versus the other?

I'm in the Worcester/RI area but can also make the troop to Boston isnt a problem.

Thanks for any help you can give, also i apologize if this isnt in the right section, maybe this shouldve gone in beg. corner.

Meet Knuckles my Boston Terrier he turned 3 the other day! He was laying at the foot of my bed and just had to take a photo. He has the most expressive eyes. I took this with my Tokina 28-70 2.8 This image wasn't altered in any way other than a resize the photo was taken with the custom image black and white setting with the K-x. This is my first photo on the site I hope you like it.
