Only reason I would change to other brand is if I suddenly start to like making videos - and I don't see that happening within next 20 years...

Pentax FA* 300mm f2.8 Back focus issues

I have similar problem with my copy of FA*300 f2.8. The lens does not focus to infinity either (maybe up to 400 meters).
I gave the lens to one person with optical tests bench and he tried to fix the issue but the result is that the infinity focus issues is still present as is the back focusing but additionally it will not focus correctly any more with TC1.7AF converter.
So, it's a little bit worse than it was before.

I may try one more place to see if they can fix it but then I'm done - I'm currently using the Pentax DFA150-450 for wildlife (some times DFA*70-200 also) and the 300 has been collecting dust...

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

My most used lenses on K-1 according Lightroom in my desktop computer (I use notebook for naturephotography course stuff and there the figures are probably very different):
DFA 28-102 scores 2173 photos
FA 20 scores 1117 photos (for most of the more recent photos DFA 15-30 has been used - score 189)
DA* 60-250 modified scores 957 photos (sold last August as I got great deal of a second hand DFA* 70-200 - score 439)
DFA 100 macro scores 719 photos
FA*300 (f2.8) scores 637 photos (again, most recent photos are made with DFA 150-450 - score 294)
Lesser number of photos are made with rest of my lenses.

What I would like to have are DFA24(20)-70 f4 and DFA70-200 f4 lenses as the f2.8 are too big and heavy for longer trekking trips especially when I head to mountains.

Does the number of focus points improve focus speeds?

Lens motor is important. In-body motor is important. Auto focus sensor is important. Processor calculating the focus corrections is important. The auto focus algorithms are important. Data transfer rate is important (not speaking about SD-card now). Battery charge level is important. Every bit and piece in the chain of focusing is important - not least the photographer.
Pentax autofocus in AF-S is fast and reliable - especially if you have SPOT mode selected.
AF-C lags behind others and it's also making unnecessary corrections after getting it right.

Important thing to do is to knowledge the good and the bad and know how to get best possible results with what you have (I got quite a few keepers of surfers yesterday).

Thanks, all for the info.
I also use quick shift to "fix" this problem but thought it could be really nice to have an "automatic" work around.
I don't know what type of motor runs the autofocus but if it is a stepper motor then it should be possible as indicated by Rob.
On the other hand; for each type of lens the focus throw (and end to end run time for each camera body) is a known fact (that may be effected by ambiente temperature and battery level) and that can be used as a limiter (drive to infinity and then permit only so much movement towards minimum distance).

For the future lenses a real time measurement system can be implemented, but that requires new protocol for lens data or at least new interpretation in firmware if there is available space in current data structure. Real distance is not requiered for this, just the fraction (or %) of full throw.

Im not sure if this has been brought up before but Im using lenses like the 100mm WR macro for other stuff too and when AF makes full cycle every now and then it is really time consuming and noisy.
Would it be possible for Pentax to make focuslimiter in camera firmware so that when seleted in menu, the AF in these long throw lenses works only - lets say - from about (no need to be exact) 0,5m to infinity?

Ive had K-1 for few weeks now and I'm loving it.
Due to work and other issues I have not been able to get out as much as I'd like, but here's one from my recent trip to Bolivia.

As others have already informed, the 35mm macro is ok used without the hood.
And I was very happy to see that DA12-24 and even Rokinon 8mm, both are usable with DA1.4TC !
Unfortunatelly the DA*16-50 is no good for K-1. Too much vignetting even with the TC.

I've had severe problems with DA12-24 focusing (phase detection with crop sensor cameras), when there is not enough texture differecies in the spot I'm focusing at. Just wondering if this could be the case...

Which focus mode you're using?
The single, center point, NOT continuos gives best results!
Don't use auto mode, if there's one in K-1, it chooses random focus point.

I also happen to like The CameraStore reviews and find them mostly honest; complaining when there's reason and praising when they like something. I also like the fact that they actually show what they do with the equipment, not just plah plah.

Is the K1 really for the average amateur photographer?

Justified, because K-1 suddenly makes me better photograper? Ticked
Justified, because I've out grown K-3? Ticked
Justified, because I'm less than an average amateur? Ticked
Justified, because I have few FF lenses? Ticked
Justified, because my wife thinks I'm waisting money? Ticked

In more serious level; I think an amateur can justify more easily new camera or lens than a pro, as the income is not related with the gear. This is ofcourse while family income permits the purchase without risking monetary balance (at least in long term).

How did that 12-24 & tc combo result?
I understood from one youtube video, that 12-24 was ok from 18 to 24.
12mm with tc would give a little wider view...if iq is good enough.

No way I get rid of my K-3! I might sell my K-5 or circulate that to my wife and sell her K-7.
Or keep K-5 for video with Tamron (manual focus) 28-105...

Can we expect firmware updates not only to include new lenses, bug fixes and minor improvements, but actually give some new features?
I'm thinking of things like:
- more info in view finder through the overlay LCD
- maybe two firmware files, one for still use and other for video use, if there is some memory or CPU limitation to keep video very basic as a stardard feature
- hardware SR for video (could be selectable, if not fixed). I think it worked well in K-5 and would like it back (though I don't do much video at all)
- automatic lens calibration and larger calibration window
- and so on...

I have seen this kind of hinge system somewhere couple decades ago, but I can't remember where and for what it was made for.
So this is not something they just pulled out of the hat and put in K-1.

What is the output voltage of the AC adapter? With that info you need only a cable and the correct connector + battery(ies) to have extra power.
Or maybe we should ask Pentax to design a grip for the Z :D
